I thought it was interesting -- and preferable to me -- that when Chuck Berry recorded "Roll Over Beethoven" it was in a sort of swing tempo, perhaps better suited to the kinds of whirling dance steps that kids were still doing in the late 1950's. When the Beatles adapted big beat to their music and kids were doing the twist (God love ya' Chubby), the boogaloo, the mashed potato and a myriad of other crazes -- big beat fit right in. And yes, George was one of the greatest at providing licks and riffs and solos that fit each song perfectly. Paul says that George was the one who came up with the signature repeating riff of "And I Love Her" -- as well as the soulfully twinkling riff during the "bright are the stars that shine" verse.

Glad you liked it. Yeah I agree that the Chuck Berry version has more of a swing to it. It’s interesting because usually they would play something closer with the shuffle beat. That was their staple for live especially but not always in the studio. There’s another, short video on this channel that talks about their shuffle beat called “the beat of Beatlemania“

Great video except one thing- Twist and Shout wasn’t written by the Isley Brothers, in fact, the Isley Brothers’ version is also a cover and not the original. The song was written by Phil Medley and Bert Berns and it was originally recorded and first released in 1961 by The Top Notes. The Isley Bros releasee it in 1962 and The Beatles in 1963.

Wow, great research, thank you, Dave! This was a blast to listen and watch. We are so accustomed to the Beatles versions it is almost difficult to listen to the originals which strangely seem to lack ’that something’. The one who is consistently the hardest for the Beatles to improve upon IMO is Carl Perkins who holds his own. Even a strong singer like Little Richard pales IMO a little against Paul’s sensational performances on those two numbers. Live versions of Long Tall Sally are really cooking. The band was the tightest. George Martin said about the Beatles (roughly) that ’everything seemed to come more natural to them, the tempos, the feel, than most other bands he worked with’. Dave just showed us why: they had rehearsed and internalised a huge musical vocabulary through hundreds of songs. That’s a huge reservoir out of which to pull creative ideas and arrangements. Add to that the tremendous unique band synergy they had. George Harrison’s special edge was always rehearsed arrangements which he executed very well. He might have been a bit slow to develop them but once he did they were just right.
@inspiredbeatles4 жыл бұрын
hey thx Top Cat. yeah, I think you're right on w/ the reservoir.
@andyloftube4 жыл бұрын
Dave Nevins - Beatles Redux Add the fact that they all learnt that same reservoir together becoming so well synced. That was the ’four headed monster’ aspect - that they thought and acted in concert, almost like a single person. That remarkable and unusual cohesion paid a huge musical dividend. Thanks again for the good stuff!

@@inspiredbeatles The point is that The Beatles versions were the versions that we teenagers in the UK heard first, and led to Beatlemania. Which later spread to America thanks to Mr Ed Sullivan. And incidentally, as bad as you think they were, it seems the american teenagers of the day thought that The Beatles versions were pretty cool, as history shows. "Til There Was You" was not a jazz classic, but a Broadway show musical tune. However, the Beatles were NOT covering the show tune directly (as they did not even know the song was from a show), but the *cover version* sung by Peggy Lee in 1961, whose music Paul McCartney was familiar with.

I don't compare soul singers to a rock band! So of course there are differences, I don't think one is any better than the other, they're both good in their own ways, it's two totally different approaches!
@inspiredbeatles4 жыл бұрын
totally understand. but interestingly the Beatles would often comment on the superiority of who they covered. Just recently saw McCartney interview somewhere and he was saying that they couldn't compete with the favorite stars that they covered. But ironically, Beatles fans often see the Beatles covers as better. Obviously it's a mix of good stuff.
@inspiredbeatles4 жыл бұрын
I also think it's interesting that they played it more rock style, but yet were much more influenced by the soul music.
@thumbsaloft4 жыл бұрын
@@inspiredbeatles, What McCartney said makes sense because I'm sure he was considering the different approaches! One is rock and one is not! Twist and Shout as a soul song is better by the Isley Brothers, but as a rock song The Beatles created the definitive version! Even someone like Little Richard has a more soulful approach to his rock and roll with more piano and horns, whereas the Beatles take Long Tall Sally strip it down and rock it up with three electric guitars and pounding drums! By the way, The WASHINGTON COLISEUM PERFORMANCE OF LONG TALL SALLY is the Beatles absolute best live version of that song! Ringo is on absolute fire!

The Beatles could have done without one or two of the covers that appeared on 'Beatles For Sale'. 'Mister Moonlight' and 'Everybody's Trying to be My Baby' deleted for two originals, 'I Feel Fine' and 'She's a Woman' would have made that album much stronger. Thought their versions of 'Anna', 'Twist and Shout' and 'Words of Love' bettered the originals, however that version of 'Boys' by the Shirelles, they couldn't top that and for me Herb Alpert's version of 'Taste of Honey' beats all-comers.

KZbin will allow you 8 secs of samples w/o blocking the video. Fair use allows for commentary, but not copyright, of course, because I don't own the original recording but can monetize my commentary. If it's a rarity or outtake then they may think it's a cover version, which means they'll allow the full post, if an owner later finds it they may want it down. Or in some cases, they simply monetize. It all depends. A little annoying from the poster side because there's no way to tell ahead of time what the owner pref will be.

The covers from the first Beatles album are the worst, because the album is the worst-sounding Beatles album. Hastily made, with poor production quality and strained voices, the only covers on it that sound good are "Boys" (sung by Ringo, whose voice was fine that day), and "Twist and Shout" (because John's voice was not). After the first album, the covers sounded much better, with only the lackluster "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby" and "Mr. Moonlight" from "Beatles for Sale" the only subpar cover songs. Still, I don't think any of the covers were actually better than the original records, as fun as they were.
