Hi decent and sincere people can disagree on the slightest nuance. Where I send praise, and I certainly do here, is when the tech has a genuine affinity and respect for the material, and is not simply playing ego games with technology. Considering you are working on otherwise fairly lo fi early video, I think your approach is commendable. Is there a Hippocratic oath for audio engineers? If so, you have lived up to it admirably. Even if I may not agree with every single choice you have made, you certainly have done no harm, and your well meaning sincerity is obvious.

It soulds like you omly used an Aphex Exciter and a bit of reverb. But the middle frequencies became pretty weak.
@inspiredbeatles3 жыл бұрын
As it turns out there’s no exciter on it it’s just a bunch of analog compressors. It’s also frequency mapped to FM radio so those frequency should all match in the middle. It might sound a little different because a lot of these early recordings aren’t real strong on the high end or the low end. There’s more info in the KZbin video description
@zebbach4 жыл бұрын
I think you mix wrong OH and distotion appears in the voice. Vers in Help sounds pretty good in chorus it is the same as in other examples-only hi end, that hurts in the ears.
@inspiredbeatles4 жыл бұрын
OK thanks for the input. I understand. Yeah the distortion is actually in a lot of the recordings already and when I bring out more of the tone sometimes you can hear at a little clearer.. I try to get rid of it or smooth it out a little bit without ruining the clarity. If you’re listening on the phone you will definitely hear the recording more brightly but if you hear it on a stereo that has a lot of bass then it’s usually not noticeable. I’ve tried to boil it down to a trade off and say which one do most people find a better deal. On most systems. Clearly there are defects as you point out. I try to treat these is impressionistic paintings more than historical accurate reproductions because I’m looking for more of a right brain experience then left brain. It’s more about the overall mojo. That’s the goal anyway.

Reverb was added mostly on the Houston live and also the end snippet, a taste of honey. The reason is because if the original recording has the vocals brought too far forward sometimes you can integrate it back in to the main body of the instruments by adding a little bit of reverb. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t. And in either case there’s always people who are more averse to dry recordings and some who are more averse to too much sonic butter. :-). Of course the standard of the day was a ton of reverb but it was analog reverb so it was a lot easier to enjoy. Obviously that’s not the sound we are used to hearing today.
@martinchamberlain5424 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, I really appreciate your efforts here, but I am going to make myself a really unpopular minority of one. Please leave these recordings alone! I know they are all scratchy and sometimes a bit rough, but that was a part of the charm, it’s just how it was. I’m a lifelong Beatle fan, I saw them play live in 1965, and for me, I just wouldn’t change a thing. Peace and love!
@inspiredbeatles4 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the courteous feedback. I understand where you’re coming from. I like source recordings as well. I was just trying to give a different perspective because a lot of times many people it seems want to be able to hear the material a little better and sometimes for example well and that really does change the experience of the song. Yeah idea is sometimes you let the audio engineer bring out the material so your ears don’t have to do that work. Kind a like giving the car wash. The other thing is that we already have had these in their dusty version. Anyone can listen to them in that format, and long time Beatles fans have. And of course Apple records has done similar versions, when they try to release the song. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. For example when they re-released Sergeant Pepper and the white album I thought the bass was too muddy especially around 180 Hz but I still liked to hear their attempt. I consider these like looking at a classic photograph of a person and then an artist comes along and tries to make an impressionistic version of that photo. That’s the way I see it anyway. Appreciate the input. Thanks. Blessings to you as well
