Great review ! Big question…. Does the touch screen work underwater , or how can you change settings while you are on your dive ?

The touch screen didn’t work underwater for me even outside of housing. But you hit the power button to change modes like you would with other action cameras. You can set different functions to show up on that mode swap too, so for example I added PureVideo to it so I can swap to it underwater when I go inside of a wreck.

@@kellylee514 great question. You don't have to lock it, but you can lock the screen before going underwater if you like. If the touch screen works underwater for you (it may in some cases, it just wasn't working for me underwater with the cold water I was in) you can slide up from the bottom to unlock the screen. That lock does help prevent accident presses of course though :)

Hello. I want to use Insta360 Ace Pro as a webcam for Twitch live streams. Will I have any problems with long-term use? What are your suggestions?

I haven't tried the Insta360 as a webcam. If it does have a webcam mode, I don't see any specific issues except MAYBE overheating if it's constantly plugged in? I don't stream right now at all, so I'm not really sure about that use case. I haven't had overheating issues but I haven't tried recording constantly for multiple hours either, haha. Sorry I don't have more info, I'd definitely do some Googling or searching to see if someone has used it as a webcam, or contact Insta360 support directly. I'd love to hear what you find out though!

At 30m you may need a light yes. It depends on how sunny it is, and how clear the water is. That deep, I would recommend at least 1 light if not two video lights.

The new Ista have the possibility to change the POV underwater (inside the case) like gopro? Narrow- linear+- superview or other preset? Do you need nomore red filter? Sorry for my english 🇮🇹👌👋

Great question, yes you can! You can actually go into the old recordings on device, then continue the recording from that point to merge it into a single video file.

Hey!! So my goal for this one was to show just how beginner friendly and easy it is to just hop in and film. No filter, no case, no lights, no tray. Just a selfie stick and the camera. However, I do have the case en route and I’m hoping to do a follow up video soon showcasing it even more while also using it in the housing. Great question! I actually didn’t use the housing in this video, but I’m almost 100% certain it will be negatively buoyant still. I used the Insta360 invisible selfie stick for all of the shots, which is awesome because of how long it is, but it’s also slightly negatively buoyant. I didn’t take time to get floats and try to find a good way to balance the camera + selfie stick.

Hi Thomas! Great reviews on Ace Pro. How did u keep the lens clear of fog or water droplets off the screen during dives or let’s say rainy days when you’re filming. I’ve had so much issues with this on GoPros. Also anxious to see if you’d do snow adventures with the camera. I’m new here so sorry for silly questions. I’m leaning towards Ace Pro over Hero 12 and Action 4

Hey and welcome! So underwater I wasn’t using the dive housing for these shots so no fog issues and I just wiped the lens to keep it clean between dives. With the housing, it’s actually designed to use anti fog inserts to absorb any condensation that may form from the temperature difference. The manual for the dive housing even says you can use third party inserts cut to size. As for snow, sadly I don’t live near the snow so I probably won’t get any testing in that cold of weather. In a few months I’ll be diving colder water in the Pacific around 60 degrees Fahrenheit, but nothing freezing. My local quarry will get down to the 40s I believe so I’ll probably get that as well at some point.

Sorry, forgot to add the case / dive housing comes with two or three sets of anti fog inserts and I honestly plan to use mine for awhile before swapping them. They seem super dry after a week of diving so I don’t think they really had much fog / moisture to absorb. I’ll also note I tried putting one in my official GoPro housing to fight the same issue you’re talking about and it made my hero 12 get stuck in the housing 🤦‍♂️. I had to get tweezers to pull the anti fog insert out because it made the camera get wedged, then was finally able to get my hero 12 out.

I never had fog issues. Without the case (like this video) even with the water being colder it never fogged once. In the dive housing, there’s anti fog inserts you can put in to keep the lens and case from fogging.

Flip out screen on cameras have been a thing for a long time so I’m not personally concerned. Think any DSLR or cam corder even. It’s not new technology, just new for an action camera to have it, so I have more confidence in it personally.

I'm mainly wondering if it would be possible to activate/deactivate clear zoom with the housing (for example is it possible to set clear zoom for a custom mode)... To be able to use clear zoom underwater would be a great advantage comparde to other cameras. (I'm for example thinking about how it could combine with a wet macro lens). Would be nice also if other companies would make a dedicated housing for this camera (T-Housing? ), because insta360 is not known for having stock for its accesories for their older models.

I’m a fan of third party accessories in general too because there’s sometimes some great innovation in those products too. We’ll see what people make! I’m thinking of this one for snorkeling over the insta360x3 because I’ve heard it can be hard to get good footage with the reflections etc on the x3 underwater. But I’d rather put a waterproof case on the ace pro to protect it which means I can’t use the flip screen so selfie shots not so easy that way. Does this ace pro overheat like the go pro?

I didn’t have a single problem with overheating but I absolutely have in my GoPro Hero 12. Snorkeling would be fine without a case unless you’re free diving deeper than 10 meters (33 feet), jfyi, but I understand wanting the housing regardless. If you’re thinking of picking up either, seriously check out the Black Friday specials because you’ll get so much more for your money right now than if you wait.

I used the default video settings on auto mode at 4k60fps, then I did PureVideo on default settings for shots where I was in low light like in the wrecks. 😊 There are manual settings too and I plan to experiment with it more too to see what the best settings will be in the future. 🤓 For ease of use and just showcasing how easy it is to start, I didn’t want to modify settings heavily lol.

There is automatic white balancing and color correction via AI, then in their editor, AquaVision 2.0 is an additional layer of color correction and color grading that’s handled via AI as well and you can adjust the hue and intensity sliders to get the look you’d like. There are some “color modes” you can apply which are kind of like a filter that applies on everything you record, and I’m 99% sure (would need to grab my camera to double check but I’m out right now) that one of those modes is underwater. I didn’t use it though for this video, again because I wanted to show how good it could look raw out of camera without doing anything specific to change settings and such. You can turn it on, jump in the water, and still capture great stuff.

Great question, no the lens is not removable but I’d check with Insta360 about this concern as they have a care program, warranties, etc and one of those may be something that would cover this. You’d have to check with them though, I don’t know the full specifics of their care program or warranty coverage.

Great video! I'm a scuba diver and quiet often I dive deeper than 60 feet. I am and I'm sure many divers would be interested how the Insta360 Ace Pro performs with a dive case below 60 feet. What features (like "Video Pause", "Mode switching" and the rest of the features) will or will not work with a dive case. It would be great if you could film a dive below 60 feet and review the performance of the camera afterward. I have learned whole bunch of dive related things from you watching your channel. Thanks Phil! So without the dive housing/dive case it’s waterproof to 10 meters, which is 33 feet. With the dive housing, it’s waterproof to 60 meters, which is about 200 feet. With the housing, you can’t flip up the screen but everything else works the same basically. You can change modes by pressing the power button on the side, you can still start, pause or cancel recording, then stop. Gestures still will be recognized, etc.

Great review. The flip screen is cool, but I can’t imagine using it much since it becomes obsolete when diving at any depth below 10m, requiring housing. I know you also have the Hero12. Have you found anything the GoPro is better at? I need to feel better about my purchase haha

Fantastic overview! I tried the Insta360 1-inch some years ago, but sharpness aside, it's achilles heel was the white balance - it was awful and jumped all over the place (greens, purples, yuck!). What has been your experience with this model?

So honestly all the footage in this video was set to auto white balance and I didn’t touch up anything. On some (not even all) shots I hopped in their editor and only made the single change of applying their AI “AquaVision2.0” which lets you slightly adjust hue then intensity of that adjustment. For me personally, I didn’t have that typical terrible white balance shift I’ve seen from auto modes on other cameras. I’m going to curaçao in a few weeks and will be taking it with me to test even more! So far, it’s absolutely replacing my previous action camera set up.

That said, I do plan to test some various tweaks in the coming months (especially as it warms up more here in the US late Spring) and will likely make a "best settings" type of video in the future. The good news is on full auto mode, it does a great job! I can only imagine what further tweaking might do for us!

It’s a major feature for sure. I have another video on the channel (probably in the sidebar) that compares it to the latest GoPro and that’s at all sorts of depths. This video came out at launch and making a video that also requires you buy accessories seemed less than ideal. I wanted to talk about out of the box uses. For reference, GoPro is also 10m without housing, so it’s more of “it’s in parity and gives you a better option with the flip screen” Snorkeling, shallow dives (a lot of reefs for example), and shallow free dives would definitely enjoy the screen though. One video can’t cover every possible use case as I’m sure you know, so this was serving that specific angle and then later covered with housing at various depths

You can for sure though you won’t have firmware updates and lose a lot of capabilities from the app. It will work and has a microSD card for your footage

Hey Thomas, nice work as always! It’s really great to review this through a diving/water lens :) The AI features would go a long way in optimising the post production process, something I always felt was Insta360’s weakness. It’s still between the X3, this Ace Pro and DJI Action 4 for me. Heard you can also pair this with Apple or Garmin watches so you can overlay stats onto your footage. Can’t wait to try as I have a Garmin dive comp! Just one question, did you review this without the dive case? Possibly can’t use the flip screen with it inside 😅 I wonder how this camera would do on night dives and other low light/vis conditions…. Still a great addition to the action camera landscape and giving us consumers a (good?) headache 😂

Hey! Happy you enjoyed it! The AI features are honestly pretty amazing. There’s so much to showcase it’s hard to cover it all in just one video. The color correction and low light performance were huge for me. If you look near the end of the video I do a side by side inside a wreck where you can clearly see so much more detail of the floor and walls where on the GoPro it’s just dark and brown/muddy footage. I need to do a full night dive with it soon too when I have a chance. As for the Apple Watch and Garmin metrics, I’m also hoping to try the overlay with diving metrics. I’m not sure if the Apple Watch ultra will do that or not, or the Garmin descent for that matter, but if I can get one to test I plan to do it! I did the whole review without the housing, and yes within the housing the flip screen can’t be accessed. But everything else still works for a better image than the other cameras I’ve tried. Honestly I was a bit shocked. I didn’t think it would look that accurate because color is lost at depth and that’s something every camera struggles with. It’s definitely a win for consumers to push the boundaries in action cameras imo. The other companies haven’t done much innovation unfortunately, but now they have to if they want to survive.

Insta360 is always a brand who I’d tell my friends would be the “best newcomer” category, but it’s really going toe to toe with the established players. Hoping to get my hands on one to test!

To a correct review, you should place in housing. All features do not work in housing ..like the screen ..

The housing is an additional accessory that isn’t necessary unless you’re going deeper than 10 meters which I mention in the video. You can’t use the flip up screen in the housing, yes, but that doesn’t change any of the other features I mention in the video. It’s one unique feature but the sensor, lens, AI, etc are all still applicable even in the housing

The problem with this video is that he compares the image quality to a gopro, which is terrible compared to the DJI Action 4. The DJI Action 4 has the same sensor size as the Ace Pro and acolour temperature sensor. This would be a valid comparison, not the inferior Gopro. Its easy to show off the camera's image quality when you face a Gopro. If it was deliberate or he simply doesn't have an action 4, you tell me.

Wow super bias, don't think anyone is going to go diving without a housing with only 10m waterproofing, can't remember the last dive I did above 10m and don't think you will be flipping a screen while in the housing! Flip screen should break off first time you take it MTB riding Underwater water colours don't have any pop to me. Changing 4 mins faster than and osmo 4, yep that's a big deal Ha Ha! I’m sorry you feel I’d throw my integrity away for a sponsorship. I didn’t have the waterproof housing at the time of this video, and made that as clear as I could. I do have another video comparing the Ace Pro to the GoPro Hero 12, both in housings and at various depths up to about 23m. Based on feedback on other videos I’ve done, people absolutely stay around 10m or less because many reefs are at those depths and it’s common, especially with divers who only go diving on a vacation, for them to stay shallower. You’re right that the screen can’t flip while in a case, I’ve said that a few times in the comments as people had questions and I believe I mentioned it in the video as well. I can’t speak to durability in mountain biking as this is a scuba diving channel, but I guess time will tell with reviewers. For phone editing, that’s actually extremely common as most people just look to capture underwater fun and don’t own premiere pro or some other editing software, nor know how to use them. Think of the average consumer that just takes some photos and videos. You see blue footage all the time online. That’s fine that you’ve never edited on your phone but an extremely large majority of people do nowadays, hence the rise of things like Snapchat, Instagram reels, KZbin shorts, TikTok, etc. You can edit those on a computer of course, but many people are just posting from their phones after editing in an app like CapCut at best if not the in app editors. I don’t mind constructive feedback but if you’re this opposed to the content and think I lack integrity, it may not be the channel for you. That’s okay, but please keep that in mind as we do have community guidelines. Constructive feedback is 100% welcome, but let’s definitely make sure it’s constructive.
