Hey, I think the side by side comparisons would’ve been better if the cameras were both on the same side. It’s hard to tell which one exposes better when the 360 is exposing for sunlight and the GoPro Max is exposing for shadows

just be aware that the X3, as well as all of Insta360 360 cameras, introduces a 10s to 25s gap every 30min or so, whenever it creates a new file. The GoPro MAX records in an absolutely continuous way even if it has to split your footage into several files

Do not use it underwater without protective case. Mine got water damage. I do regret buying this because my hero max is still monster especially when i do some hard trail activity, i didnt worry putting it on my helmet or in my motorcycle bracket because it look so sturdy. Unlike to the big screen of my insta x3 it is so distracting especially the screen and its overheating so fast and automatic shutdown after 30 minutes of ussage compare to my hero max, ive never had a problem with my max.

I think none of the consumer 360 cameras are matured yet. The X3 looks definately better than the max, but look at 4:27 those warps aren't looking good. 5.3k sounds as if it was much but the 16:9 crops can't compete with the footage of dedicated standard action cams. I think I'm gonna wait another few generations until I can export a nice looking 4k 16:9 shot out of the 260 footage.

Based on my experience with the Insta360 One R, and from what I've seen of video made with newer models of 360 cameras, the industry still has a ways to go before we'll start getting video quality that I will call excellent. It seems to be getting better, but it's still not as good as I would like to see it. Until then, I think I'm going to hold off on putting any more money into 360 cameras.

Maybe I'm blind but it just seems like the Max has overall better video quality. The X3 has the easier to use software and a few nice tricks but if GoPro brings out an updated Max, that's probably what I would buy.

I have Go pro 4 and Go pro 7 and both still work flawlessly with no glitches or heat problems, bought the X2 when it first came out and it does work well, one thing I hated was that small screen as glitchy and unit would get hot not that it ever stop working, you just have to be careful with the stick out screens as easy to scratch or damage if dropped so recommended a case and screen protectors, I’m very tempted by this new X3 due to bigger screen and as you say, it’s both a flat lens and 360 camera 🥳🥳🥳🥳

Had a X2, recorded sometimes, it was glitchy. Even with a firmware update. Files corrupted multiple times. Bought a Hero Max and had no issues, always recorded when I hit record. The editing on the insta360 was miles better though. Maybe I’ll try the X3 down the road, but I rather have a camera that records when I need it.

I would personally like to see a DJI 360 camera. I really hope they are working on one. I took the insta360 one x2 on an ultra marathon with me last week and whilst im really happy with my footage, it is a heavy thing to carry for over 15 hours!

I have a Hero 10 I use for capturing my races since I can use the “scuba” case and replaceable lens cover in case anything happens. 80mph on a dirt track with rocks can do a lot of damage! I was researching some 360 cameras but it doesn’t seem they have the cases for these?

They do. Insta360 has a Venture case and a Dive case. GoPro probably has their version of it. I kind of remember a bubble that came out about 3 or 4 years ago for the Fusion. Not the best solution, though, since the distortion from these cases was quite noticeable.

the insta 360 would have been my choice for a fishing camera. BUT....that 14 second gap between chapters kills it for me. I currently run my two Hero 9's on external power in a waterproof case for the whole fishing day. My channel is devoted to the takedown. If I miss that...no bueno. No way I'm taking a chance of missing the take down because of something inherit of the camera itself. It's bad enough if it's on me.... I'm currently on the hunt for a 360 camera, might have to stick with gopro, I use Adobe PP for editing, noway I'd use gopro's software, so that part of the equation doesn't bother me. I'll probably wait till gopro's next version of their 360 and decide then. I look forward to your review. Cheers.

The screens really are not needed if they are 360 maybe for settings but if they record everything all around you I use both cameras by the way and both are really good

At 1:00 and 2:10 and a couple of other places your video shows some blurring and pixelization around the edges, especially at the bottom. I've noticed this in my GoPro videos, not the raw video files, but after I upload them to KZbin, even though I'm selecting the highest quality settings. What's happening there?

KZbin will always compress your video. Are you doing 4k? That's what I upload and have had no issues.

Still the worst thing about 360 cameras, and why they fail to compete in the action camera world, is their lenses aren''t user replaceable. You still have to send them back to whatever company you bought them from to get the lens repaired or replaced. Most action cameras have cheap replaceable front lenses or tons of filters to choose from to keep them protected. I'm not saying they're not great for shooting action. Far from it. I'd actually say they're better. But that inability to replace damaged lenses is a real buzzkill that holds back the majority from switching fully to 360 cameras as action cameras.

Does the X3 have higher resolution? I'm using the Max right now, and I find that it just doesn't have enough resolution in 360 mode, as soon as you zoom in it gets really blurry. Would the X3 but much better?

I have been digging through for a while, if you watch in a vr headset, The GoPro Max still seems to have the best quality, even as good or better than the insta 360 dual 1" sensor model.

Great Comparison. Which of them would you say has better night mode or captures better videos and photos at night and in low light settings. I want to make a purchase for a 360 camera to use at night for gig logging in clubs and bars at night. A night mode/low light comparison will be brilliant

You might want to look at the Insta360 One RS 1" 360 which has 1" sensors for both lenses. Unfortunately, it's about 800 bucks, nearly twice the price of the competition.

Great review, BUT………Forget the official waterproof specs. You need to actually test these 360cams in real watersport activities! Most all reviewers are not watersport people 😮. Need to take the X3 out surfing, wakeboarding, kiteboarding, anything, and then let us know. The OneX2 had many more water ingress complaints/failures than the Max. Many OneX2 users don’t trust it around water unless they use the dive case. Despite the Max’s aging design and inferior edit software, it actually survives aggresive water use way better than the Insta. I know first hand. So my question is weather the X3 really addressed the water ingress issue or not. The official waterproof spec is meaningless to me…..(sorry for the rant…….)

Great comparison. Based on my VR time, think I'll be holding off until at least a 12k version comes out. Seems unlikely GoPro will be dropping a new 360 this year unfortunately, since the chip makers don't see the need for it and thus their hands are tied. New 11 specs are looking good tho, so I guess that'll have to hold me over.

Everything you said about the software to edit the footage I 100% agree with. I think the footage on the Max isn’t bad at all and the audio is decent due to its 6 (I think) external mics but the editing software is hateful. The Insta360’s software on the other hand is a joy to use and experiment with. As you said, the Max is too long in the tooth now and needs an update.
