These crooks pay fractional fines for the money they steal from the people, yet the victims don't even get a cut of the fine and go to jail themselves if they steal food to survive.

It's not surprising for those who have studied political science and economics. If Equatorial Guinea is rich in oil, then due to low cost of extraction and high returns due to international scarcity, oil industry will generate huge profits, this will conversely lead to other sectors of economy being neglected. The high amount of exports will appreceate the value of currency, making imports costlier. Thus what could have been compensated by imports now would not be thus making common goods costly for citizens. Now to maintain power every government needs 3 things : support of subordinates, keeping the number of subordinates low and money to pay the subordinates. If government can capture the lucrative oil industry, it can pay the local leaders good money and pay military good money to crush dissent. It does not need the support of mass public, it just needs to do enough to keep them above subsistence levels. The government then does the rest through ideologies wether it be religion, communism or nationalism to take attention off the inequity. Thus it has no incentive to invest in citizens. A classic case of resource curse.

France should return any fine to the people of Equatorial Guinea through an organization that will ensure the money benefits them
@megamanxhunter3 жыл бұрын
That will be difficult to return the money, with the Obiang Nguema family having an Anaconda vice grip on the country.

How can you sleep a wink at night knowing you're embezzling your county's money from your own people. You're stealing money from your own people and living and flaunting a lavish lifestyle but your people are starving and living in poverty. Absolutely despicable.

Wow I'm a big advocate of if you earned your money you spend it the way you want but if you are a leader or a vice president of a country than you are obligated as a human being to ensure the well-being of your people. Just sacrificing a few of those exotic cars would make a huge dent in the poverty level of his people. How do people like to sleep at night
