Install OpenWRT 21.02 & DSA VLAN Configuration for WAN Interface

Thanks for your video! Just to let you know your steps on creating WAN interfaces through DSA have now been added to the official documentation. The docs were originally written using swconfig examples, but these are no longer valid for many routers using DSA. Your video allowed me to convert my own swconfig setup to DSA and I've also gone ahead and broken down the steps in your video into instructions for others in the "Creating additional WAN interfaces" section.

It is so sad in WRT-1900ACS, they removed the Switch tab by default. I think you may have to activate it manually, anyways it still serve my purpose without Vlan. Keep up the good video!

Nice turtorial but how to assign vlan to port? for example lan1 or lan2? seems it's impossible by this method because by default you do not have lan ports on interface tab. You have to add it manualy.

bro cho mình hỏi thiết lập WireguardVPN sử dụng qua mwan3 trên bản này có khác gì không ạ? Mình dùng cách upgrade lên và cài lại các software wireguard nhưng bị lỗi. Check bên mwan3 detail thì báo lỗi interface Wireguard_HK is error (16) and tracking is active.

Cấu hình Wireguard vẫn như cũ, nhưng có thể do việc áp dụng DSA và đổi tên ifname thành device nên gây ra lỗi trên. Hiện tại bản 21 này vẫn chưa thật sự hoàn chỉnh và vẫn còn bug, nếu không thật sự cần bạn có thể quay về 19.07 cho ổn định.

What is DSA feature, my device is also ath79, but switch option is enabled, its a tplink-c6-v2. Not sure if DSA support is there or no.

Yes, I expected that the device will be supported after few major upgrades. If you have a choice, get V2 to have more RAM and better cooling.

Hi, the default configuration of WAN and LAN ports are untagged. When configure the VLAN for WAN, the status is now tagged. Further configuration like what you do with the Switch page, you can have a look at this page openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/dsa/converting-to-dsa

Hi Khairul, IMO, RM650 is expensive to for the Linksys WRT1900AC, either V2 or V1. If you need a good device to play around with OpenWRT and also stock firmware, Asus RT-AC86U is not a bad choice. I found some seller on Shopee and Lazada posted the WRT1900AC used for ~ RM250 (not a really good deal but still okay). However, the budget is with you and it is your decision.

Hi, is it possible to setup an openwrt router with a cloudflare warp client? I intend to use it as a bridge for all my lan devices, to route all traffic through cloudflare wireguard tunnel. Haven’t seen any tutorials on how to do this, would be great if you can help! Thanks

Cloudflare uses an app to run their VPN client. I think they support Debian, Ubuntu and Cent OS. In other words it could be done but not in Open WRT. The Cloudflare client is open source so someone could port the client to ARM and package it for OpenWRT someday. You can use other VPN services that support Wireguard though. It just won’t have the cool abilities of Warp. If I wanted to do this I would build a small Linux computer to behave as an access point on my network that would run the Warp client onboard. All devices connected to this particular Linux box would automatically be tunneled. You can find tutorials on how to do all of this. If you figure it out maybe you can post a video on KZbin about how you did it. Maybe I should do this! 🤔

While cloudflare doesn’t (yet) support any routers officially, I’ve seen some tools on github that generates a cloudflare wireguard profile that can be run on a computer. I was just wondering, since openwrt routers support wireguard, if I were to copy the configurations over to the respective fields on the router(such as public key, private key, etc.) it should be able to run, right? I’m not really too experienced in the networking side of things and haven’t got my hands on an openwrt capable router yet, but it would be cool if somebody could try it!

Hi Van Tech I appreciate your video about vlan on latest stable openwrt i"m from indonesia and many openwrt enthusiast here change amlogic tv box to openwrt router, The problem is tv boxes only has 1 ethernet port now I have main router (amlogic tv box) running openwrt 21.02 that has only 1 ethernet port, I want to extend physical ethernet with another old openwrt router running openwrt 19.07, the secondary router have switch menu on luci/network, so i can create vlan id 1, 2, 3 etc but i dont know how to setup main router to assign or tagging each vlan id on secondary router could you explain me? Thank you

Hi, maybe you can share the network topology and your devices overview in the FB group and we will see if any folks have any idea about it. From what I know, this TV box has a USB 3.0 port, why don't use buy a USB 3.0 to Gigabit or a cheap USB 2.0 to Ethernet adapter instead. This will help to simplify the who setup.

@@VanTechCorner i use old tv box, still use usb 2.0 so , i think its better when use ethernet port i have fix the problem i reinstall my sdcard then create new interface on my tv box router i just type eth0.10 (renumbering vlan id) on device setup.. i got IP on each interface i think i do too many setup on my tv box so many configuration make some conflict the topology is ethernet tv box router connected to lan 1 secondary router iset untagged to vlan port lan 1 and 2 and set as LAN interface (unmanged), my laptop connect to port lan 2 and success get IP from main router i set tagged on vlan port lan 3, 4, 5 and cpu on each vlan i succes set interface for each vlan from tv box router thank you very much

Bản 21.02 này nó quy hoạch cái vụ nhóm port và tạo Vlan y như Mikrotik. Chắc là lập trình viên đam mê Mik mà phải làm bên Openwrt đây mà. Trong Video anh nói khi chạy Vlan 30 bị giảm tốc độ mạng so với bản 19 cái này đáng quan ngại khi nâng cấp quá vì em đang dùng Vlan 35 của Viettel.

Thật ra đây là những khái niệm chuẩn trong Linux, và team OpenWRT đang quay về sử dụng chuẩn này để mọi người dễ hiểu và làm việc hơn đó bạn. Trong video mình sử dụng Mikrotik AC2 vừa quay PPPoE, cân bằng tải đồng thời chạy DHCP server trên VLAN30 nên chắc bị quá tải thôi. Dĩ nhiên là khi chạy VLAN tốc độ sẽ bị giảm thiểu và cần thêm tài nguyên CPU, nhưng mình tin sẽ không chậm như vậy (thật ra trong video nó được 250 Mbps với 50% CPU idle).

@@VanTechCorner Hello , as I had said previously that Opewrt has already created / built an x86 EFI build and is available in the Stable download section , and to use it as is is fine , My question was about the extending of the partition in order to use the entire partition as you described in a earlier video , so I do not have to build one myself , just use what has already been built , The EFI build has 3 partitions , and I thought you may have already tried this build and have found a way to extend the partition , otherwise the partition would be about 110 MB and not utilize 250GB

I see, unfortunately I don't have a test device that support EFI to try it out. With BIOS, I am able to extend the partition with fdisk and resize2fs. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYCvn2V-ZquNe6s. You can also find the docs here openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/installation/openwrt_x86. Just my curiosity, are you running OpenWRT on a new x86 system where only EFI is supported?

@@VanTechCorner I am running OpenWRT x86 , but don't require EFI , I have hardware that supports it and just wanted to try it out , I use fdisk and resize2fs that will resize the partition and works fine on a non-EFI build , but the EFI build uses an additional partition for EFI even though the fdisk and resize2fs did resize , it appears that it did not natively include the EFI partition after resizing , possibly running fdisk and resize2fs and choosing the 3rd partition and including it might work , but I was not sure and did not try that , I thought you may have and I would ask you first before messing with it Thank you
