Install Synology DSM 7.2 on a PC (Updated)

This video is tech refresh of earlier tutorial on how how install DSM 7 on your PC. In this video I'll show you how to install Synology DSM 7.2 on PC without any command line interface. Its all GUI based where we will be using ARC Loader which will fake our PC into RS4021xs+ hardware. This improved version of loader which also support custom addons an updates.

Just wanted to report back that I have successfully install VER 7.2.2 I will say that while I did not use your method.. the one suggested was just as easy to follow. I will say you gave me the push I needed to get it going. It was very much touch and go because I did not know what the loaders may have been doing with my data. But in the end it worked out and alot of my problems were hardware 'per-se. Like instead of installing from USB port on the front of the computer I ran it from the back and it cleared the last hurdle. Thank you!

Great video! Just couple of question, did u connect your existing drive whit data before starting this process or you add them later ? The operative system is gonna istall on the primary disk of the pc? So if I install on a pc whit an ssd and connect on the data port my 2 disk from my nas should it work and keep all ? As long as that drive was under DSM before, it will recognize it, if you are talking about pulling a drive from windows PC and connect it to NAS it will not see those files.

You don't have to run this from a USB stick - I did it with an NVMe drive, although I used a USB NVMe caddy to initially install it on to the drive with Rufus, then slotted the drive into a m.2 slot on the motherboard and booted from there. Obviously, this will deny you a slot for SSD caching but I installed this on an all SSD system. Great vid though - very helpful

Yes this is a good tweek. A slow USB used for booting is a problem. A img file burned on a fast NVME or small SSD is a good solution. But is a good security key. You boot and then extract USB. If someone stole you miniPC(NAS) on the next boot it will have a suprise. If you use encription it will have no way to reinstall from a new ARC usb

Yeah thanks,i prefer an internal boot device,since i wanted to place the nas.if usb fails i would need to reinstall everything.my old pc doesnt have nvme,i will need internal 2.5inch sata ssd Edit 2 later that day: i was able to successfully disk copy the bootable usb to internal 128gb ssd,and now i can boot it perfectly from the ssd without need of USB attached.

Well, its tricky, I did test it a while back from DSM6 to DSM7 whiteout any critical data on my disks and apparently it worked without any data loss. But I will not recommend doing it if you have critical data on old DSM. To be honest I have been telling in my videos to not use it in production and for your critical data storage unless you have a failproof backup plan.

I'm upgrading simply because I want to take advantage of some of the new features of version seven. I like the versitility of the software, and I cannot afford their hardware. Actually you can follow exact same steps on a new usb and to update loader, that what I have been doing without any issues, select the same DSM model, system will detect already installed DSM on your hard drives and all you data will stay intact. Well DSM License is GPL kb.synology.com/en-sg/DSM/help/DSM/Home/license?version=7 I generally don't recommend to host you critical data on this DSM, since this whole setup is dependent upon one developer for all future updates. But I don't believe you existing setup will stop working unless you have a hardware failure or you play around with the system file. I have been using DSM on Synology's genuine hardware since 2011 and their software never crashed on me. The scenario you are presenting is failure of hardware, other than your hard drive, in that case easiest option will be use another synology DSM to recover your data easily. Recovering data off the drives is possible I guess, but will be tricky, especially if you are not comfortable with Linux and command line interface. kb.synology.com/en-us/DSM/tutorial/How_can_I_recover_data_from_my_DiskStation_using_a_PC

Third, my requirement is to build good reliable NAS with my own hardware of good configuration. Yes, some users have used one of their SSD for the loader and booted PC using that SSD but personally I don’t see a reason to dedicate an SSD for the pupose.

There different variants of loaders, if you are using ARC loader and switching between DSM models, there should not be any issue. DSM will detect previous model from hard drives and keeps the data intact while migrating.

How do you choose the model, what criteria do you use to determine the model? CPU is easy, next number of bays? Just like nikolaradovic1726 I try to run it on an old laptop.

To be honest, I try to pick the model which has the hardware as close as possible to my own. Of course it doesn't need to be exactly same but in my experience this increases chances of successful and reliable build. For Example I am using it on my HP Z800 machine which has Intel Xeon and I have 64GBs of RAM installed. So I picked XS4021xs+ which is also Intel Xeon and does support up to 64GB of RAM. For Hard drives I always use WD Red Pros and never had any combability issues so far (Even though these drives are not in Synology's combability list for most newer models).

What is you hardware and make model of your drives? do you have any onboard SATA controller? try setting it to AHCI Mode.

If you are seeing the IP address then thats it, you need to access DSM using the IP and Port number on the screen.

It all depends on your applications, DSM is optimized to run on very low hardware specs. If you are not going to use it for VMs or media transcoding etc then an old PC with 4G Ram should be more than enough.

If you want to build your NAS using custom hardware then I recommend to look at this github.com/AuxXxilium/AuxXxilium/wiki/Hardware:-Confirmed-working If looking to buy an old PC as package with good potential of expansion, I am using my old HP Z800 workstation and it supports the loader and DSM out of the box without any additional hardware drivers. Of course if you are going to host your critical data on it you should go for Synology Hardware and use ARC Loader backed DSM for backups and snapshots.

It wont cause any issue while DSM is running but if your machine reboots, without bootloader USB it will not boot into DSM. So better to leave it in there.

USB Stick / drive carries the Loader files, it has to boot from loader files to load the DSM. People also use SSD to flash the loader and boot it from there.

Which Loader are you using? I f you have followed any of my tutorials to build your loader previously, you can either build a new loader from scratch as per this tutorial or you can use update loader feature as explained in the video to update to loader to latest version or you must be at least on this version ARC 24.4.10 to update to 7.2.1 Update 5 which is the latest one. If you follow above you shouldn't lose your data.

I believe there are work arounds to partition a drive and use for DSM. I have never tested it though. I guess DSM does kill drive for data when you'll perform a fresh install.

Its similar, I am not sure which loader have you used but this one has (ARC) patch which can come in handy if want to use syno services, (I haven't tested it tho, I don't use Synology Services even on my genuine Synology NAS). Its all GUI based with lots off addons and most importantly its getting frequent updates from the developer.
