Electric fencing is an effective modern tool to protect farms from damage wild animals can cause. In European countries, its use is standard practice - the device makes it easier for farmers to manage the herd, protect livestock, and prevent conflicts with wild animals (bears, wolves, and lynxes). Beekeepers also install electric fences to protect hives from uninvited visits by bears.
WWF-Ukraine experts estimate that at least 27 attacks by large predators on local farms and apiaries, were recorded in the Carpathians between 2019 and 2020. The total loss was at over UAH 550,000. From 2018 to 2021, WWF-Ukraine distributed 29 sets of electric fences in the Carpathians and conducted a series of pieces of training for farmers and beekeepers. Fences were installed on farms affected by the attacks. After that, wild animals continued to visit farms, but the attacks stopped.
