Nice antenna, Terry! Wish I had the space for one. My great-grandfather had a yagi strapped to his chimney back in the 1930s to 1950s. The support shaft ran down the chimney some 40 feet to a wooden mount on the ground. All he had to do to aim the antenna was grab an iron bar he'd bolted to the side of the shaft and turn it with his arm. That antenna, plus his German sounding surname made some of his neighbors think he was sending messages to the Nazis during the war. However, he was able to reach New Zealand from New York on occasion, once to grant a New Zealand man permission to marry his daughter. They became my grandparents. I still have his receiver, a Hammarlund HQ-120X.

Hi Terry. Nice job on the 10M beam/tower. All we need now is some cycle 25 sun spots. 73 WD9ABG. Missing you Marsha and Emi at the ARCI meetings. Hope to see you soon.

I have the same tower. been up at my place for 38 years. I have a ham 4 rotor and specially repaired hornet tri band beam. those clear nylon straps will not last. also put ground wire from the beam mast grounding the beam to the tower top. its worth the effort to put the steel ring gear in the 45-2. nice installation you should have a good time with it.

Nice tower. My dad had a steel tower with a two element 10m beam, above that a long x beam for vhf, above that another one for the ufh and of course a long wire down the garden. This video brings me back. There happened a bit of “antenna down, another antenna” up those days.Thanks for sharing.

That's a pretty cool setup. I got a Rohn 45 tiltover, been up since 1980. But yours looks easier to crank up & down.

Takes me back, Terry. My first Yagi was a very similar 3-element 10M on 60 feet of Rohn 25, fed by an Icom IC-701. Been awhile - ex-KA1LR.

I've had my fair share of workouts cranking up towers like that one back in the day. Fortunately if you install the antenna correctly you usually have to do it only once. A friend of mine had a telescopic tower that had hydraulics that raised and lowered it. That thing was sweet but expensive.
@dfpolitowski24 жыл бұрын
I bought that rotor for my first antenna last week. After looking for a good used one and finding none I thought I would go new. Last thing I want to do is go up on the roof to service this thing. I'm paying someone else to up up my antenna. I'd use an electric drill or something to turn that tower lift screw. Keep that too coated with anti seize or the right kind of grease.
@E_Rock4 жыл бұрын
Quick tip; only use black zip ties outside. They are the only color with any UV protection and will last a lot longer than the white ones I saw on the Coax supporting the service loop. I see people use the metal ones but they cause PIM (noise) if used within 10 feet of any antenna or connector.

I'd heard people claim you were a bit cranky; now we've got proof! 😎 Seriously, looks like a great setup, should work well. As others have asked, what's your grounding and lightning suppression setup look like?

Looks good Terry. I will be interested to hear your experience with the G5RV though. I ran one for years with good luck, but the window line was not run near anything as the destructions with it when I bought it said to keep it away from anything since it was part of the radiator. My horizontal wires corroded in two near the end insulators after about 15 years. 73 WB8FEQ

yup...you can't overstate not letting it bounce. I have seen a guy bouncing one up and it bent in half like cooked spaghetti. And G5RV's are a great antennas..the twin lead acts as a vertical on the high bands and there is no need for a balun. In about 2 years that beam is going to be a blast to use. My code is down to 4 words per minute...But I hope to hear you on 28.350. DE W9TIT
@dampandrew4 жыл бұрын
hey dude, I just enjoy listening to CB with my 60 ft Alpha Delta sloper antenna it has a 2nd element with balun that is 15 ft. Since CB is the 11 meter band, does this mean you cannot possibly receive 10 meters using anything designed for shortwaves? Would I be able to use the sloper for transmitting?

Hi Terry as per normal the project you are doing looks most excellent! Curious to ask you, do you respond to Emails? I have a Drake Receiver I am trying to restore and ran into several problems over my pay grade. At any rate just wondering do you answer messages, emails, questions?
@jimgiordano82184 жыл бұрын
Nice antenna. But a gear reduction drive would be nicer then a ratchet. You probably don't lower it much, so it would not be cost effective. So how did the antenna perform, that would make a nice video.

Yes, I checked into the motors, Last time I did antenna work was 10 years ago. I have a nice flat SWR. Waiting for 10 meters to open

just be sure its Protected from lightning from storms gotta have a good earth ground on that ,as thats pretty high up in the air, so Hopefully u have all the stuff protected both inside and out side. But that should get you some good stations on the Bands you use most. but as i say Its Like a giant Lightning rod now, so be careful during Storms etc.

What’s the height of the tower, what’s the optimum height for 10m beam ops and what have been your results? I am interested in 40m domestic coverage and would like to do something similar.

The U bolts are too large, or the mast is too small a diameter. the mast diameter is predetermined by the bushing at the top of the tower. But the way it is, I can't imagine that the beam will not eventually move on the mast.
