As a cop I actually enjoy seeing people use systems like this. A detector is no less of a tool than the radar and lidar guns we use. And if it slows you down. I’ve done my job without even having to stop you. And like John said it generally keeps people more aware of their surroundings. I know not all my colleagues agree with me. But something I wanted to throw out there.

This is a sticky subject for truck drivers. Most well paying companies won't hire you if you have 2 or even one ticket in the preceding 1-3 years depending. It's your commercial license, it's up to you to defend it. It's their insurance (non independents) so your tickets cost them big time. I always drove fully radar protected, high end CB Radio (or shortwave). Even though most of us didn't speed much, there's always that one cop looking to write someone up. Peace of mind . . . Priceless! Thanks JRGo!

There are places that are so desperate for the revenue from speeding fines that they have made any kind of defeat device illegal and will tag on extra penalties if you try to take a bogus ticket to court. Radar and lidar work very well as revenue generating machines as they are easy to game into giving excess readings, they keep these techniques secret and deny that they exist and claim that they have design features that prevent them from getting false readings but any electronics engineer who has worked on these devices can tell you what the cheats are and how if the supposed design features actually worked they would never get any readings except under the most perfectly favourable conditions in a laboratory. These places have slogans that are meant to strike fear into drivers that even a tiny bit over the speed limit will result in a fatality and they put a great deal of effort into hiding the statistics that show that their over policing of speed limits actually increase traffic accidents and fatalities. The over policing of speed is the equivalent of micromanaging a space heater because it might overheat while metheheads are cooking crystals in your kitchen unattended

The laser detectors will give you false alerts by the airport because of the lasers the airports use to measure wind shear. But yes radar detectors have upped their game but the police have upped theirs as well plus many cars are equipped with laser and radar guidance equipment these days so that only adds to the false alerts.

Years ago, back in the day when the police car radar units were huge chrome cans about the size of a 3 lb coffee can and hung on the outside of the side window of the cruiser, ours was broken. We still used it to slow traffic down though. We would park on the side of the freeway and just sit there for an hour or so laughing our asses off at drivers who would get alongside us before they noticed the radar and slammed on their brakes. Had the radar not been broken it would have read their speed long before they even spotted our car, much less the radar hanging there. That is so cool that it integrates with the can bus and. shows up on your dash display like that.

I got my escort passport radar detector 9500ix about 15 years ago. It’s noisy now due to Hondas and Acuras and some Cadillacs giving it false alarms. But all I have to do is listen for the Ka band, which is what the police use most of the time. I’ve gotten one speeding ticket in 15 years and that was because the reader detector was in the glove box and I wasn’t paying attention. I’m older now (53) and don’t speed nearly as much as I did when I was a kid. Still when all the traffic is flowing at 75 -80, with a speed limit of 65. I like to know I’m not going to be the one to get beaned for speeding. The radar detector has more than paid for itself.
