For today's Tech-Thursdays I cover the basics for installing a bottom bracket and a headset on your bmx bike! Stevie Churchill makes an appearance and almost ruined the whole thing, haha just kidding.
But yea, hopefully this tutorial gives you guys all the necessary information and shortcuts you need to install a BB or headset on your bikes!
Please let me know in the comments about videos you want to see, other tutorials, and any other suggestions you guys might have!
Thank you everyone :)

Beating on a 350 dollar frame is not the way to go. A piece of all thread or a long bolt with washers and a nut will do the job without chance of damaging frame. 4:36 made me cringe 4:45 shows damage to the paint on the chainstay from the wood I love your videos and hate to criticize

@@MidwestRainstorms They (and I) have a bearing press, was wondering why they didn't use it. The hammer is perfectly fine for rookies that do not take pride in their work, not a top notch shop. You my friend deserve to ride a dented frame with an out whack bottom bracket. Good luck with your hammer, if you dont have one you could try a rock.

@@zactrawinski3927 That little scratch on the cs was because he used a large piece of wood. I've been using the hammer/wood method for 25 years and not once has it ever damaged a chromoly frame. Heck I remember using rubber mallets to hammer on headset cups before bikes came integrated. Hey man if you're concerned about a scuff on your frame, then you will never progress. Ride safe guys!!!

important to note about sprocket spacing: your sprocket ideally should be dead in line with your driver, or as close to this as possible without the sprocket hitting the frame. shouldn't sacrifice chain allignment just for the sake of using up spacers when most crank-sets give you ample space for the spindle bolts to tighten without bottoming out

its a nice tutorial but i honestly recommend to just build your own Bottombracket compression tool which costs about 5-10$ and is super simple. then you dont risk smashing anything and everything goes a lot smoother

heres a trick for installing a bb. just buy a loose ball 14mm axle for a front or rear hub. get a bunch of big washers that cover the bearing. grab a couple axle nuts. improvised bb tool. works really well. you can get the axles for free sometimes. other random bits of threaded rod will work. but a 14mm axle will work in any bmx crank and the length should be enough for pretty much any bb shell. worst case scenario you have to do one side at a time. thickest section in alot of those axles is like 17mm, and a lot of cranks use 22mm these days so yeah. even with 19mm cranks youve got room.

✌🏾 bro, your very helpful for alot of info. But I'm confused on my headset. I've purchased an Odyssey headset put on everything as you said, everything is nice and sealed nothing moves, but when I do come down on the front, I hear a little rattle like somthing is loose, or could that be a normal sound, or i need my star nut knock in a little more... i put this headset on a legion 100 btw...

There’s a lot of variables at play, but you could have your front hub loose, or those bearing could be messed up, your headset could be loose or damaged or your head tube could be ovalized so maybe it’s time to visit your local bike shop

Tip to add would be, throw those bearings in the freezer for an hour or two. It slightly shrinks the metal and lets the bearings tap in easiest!

you can make one out of an old 14mm looseball(or even sealed hub) axle and some washers and a couple axle nuts and a pair of wrenches. 30$ on the axle at most. axle nuts can be found easy. washers arent hard except for finding a big flat one to cover the bearing, but you can make those ones if you have a drill. its also lighter then a regular bb press, you can travel with it, its cheaper. and works just as well. any decent strength 14mm threaded rod should work as well. or anything smaller then 19mm and bigger then 10mm aka 3/8ths. hub axles are easy. just make sure it clears a 19mm bearing and you can install bb's for your friends and charge them 5$ as opposed to whatever a shop charges. or just let them use it.

Just spent half hour hammering BB into my new S&M BTM frame, then realised I forgot to put the spacer in between the bearings. There's no way the BB is coming out without smashing it to pieces. My BTM frame has a tapered BB, so there's no way the bearing cases can move in any further (there is still a *slight* lip and cannot get them in any further) so I should be fine without the spacer right? It can't move them in any further when I tighten up the compression bolt.
@khue2626
@khue2626 4 жыл бұрын
Question, Is there a reason why S&M doesn’t make the top of the frame’s head tube flush with the top of the sealed bearing?, Bottom of the head tube the sealed bearing sits in the head tube flush but on top The sealed bearing sticks out like 3 mm, Do they make a slimmer sealed bearing that will sit flush for the top integrated bearing race? Thanks

hey Alfredo quick question I had a harp 350.1 custom decked out and everything but it got stolen so now I got a hyper bike co bike for Christmas yeah its a Walmart bike with one piece cranks and a small sprocket but have already ordered stuff to make it better but back to what I was saying I can't find the kind of bottom bracket it is I've got a sealed mid 19 demolition at my place along with some mission three piece cranks but also the top of the frame doesn't have the bowl like good frames do so I'm pretty confused on what to do.

Wow, thank you so much for giving a really clear tutorial, I just really love how you explain all the parts one by one, that's just really helpful, and make anything much easier for new builder. Anyway, is BB bearing and headset bearing comes in a different size for different BMX frame, or they had one universal size for all BMX frame. Once again, thank you very much dude, liked and subbed Edit: One more thing, do we had to find a correct size for spindle to make it able to get inside the BB bearing, or any spindle would just fit right in?

yea man for sure I'm with Jake n Stevie iv been an auto tech/rider for years now and grease can cause caseings to slip see it all the time on older cars but that's no big issue the worst thing about grease is that it turns into grinding paste if your out riding street, trails and especially near beaches with wind and sand that's what ruins headsets and makes them noisy all the shit in the air sticking to all your sticky grease you've put on creating grinding paste! only thing needed is a light coat of something like wd40 on ur chain then wipe off excess to prevent accumulation of that dreaded grinding paste!, don't mean to sound like a no it all just sharing what i know!
@robertlund5694

+Jesse Miller your comments make sense but wd40 does nothing.. spit is as good.
@jessemiller1481
@jessemiller1481 8 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean your right it is thin ,does wash away easily and can actually also leave unwanted waxy residue but its probably either use that or nothing for some riders that's why I said "something like wd40" me personally i soak my chain in solvent bath nd scrub with brush to flush out any crap, blow dry then reapply high quality dry lube (cheap poor quality brands leave behind wax residue) every so often, but honestly I could write a short novel on which lubes you should use for different conditions. it was more an example that heavy lubes aren't always better than thinner lubes hense the reason for writing "something like wd40" because its probably the only thin lube most people know of
@robertlund5694
@robertlund5694 8 жыл бұрын
+Jesse Miller wd40 managed to con the world into thinking it is an all in 1 solution. my father was in the coatings industry and he told me stories of the depth the wd40 company would go to to cripple competitor s and discredit anyone trying to challenge their product claims. some seedy goings on. it is and has always been only a moisture disperser. recently I have seen wd40 introduced other new more specific product s like lubes etc . kinda a admission that wd40 has never been an all in 1 solution. no , no wd40 on chains. I suspect most people use no lube of any kind . I just throw the chain on and use some average bike shop own brand dry lube to . I don't have the dedication to clean all the storage coatings off beforehand..😎

the micro spacers are also for inside the frame your supposed to add micro spacers to the big one so its the correct lenth for your frame otherwise the bearings arnt being supported by the spacers so you may aswell not have one

You're either over tightening or your bearings are shot.

I grind on the right and my sprocket is on the right can I just flip my wheel around and my cranks and sprocket to the other side and will it still work fine?
@AvasTWCS
@AvasTWCS 8 жыл бұрын
No, you'll probably have to get new cranks that rides on the left and another hub that rides on the left either, unless your hub has switchable pawls, you can't flip it.. You can try using the cranks on the other side but your pedals will get untightened within time and as you pedal time.. I made that switch a few days ago and had to buy new cranks that rides both sides and a LHD freecoaster

Just the video I needed, thanks Alfredo. Also do most frames use a 22mm bottom bracket?
@AlfredoMancuso
@AlfredoMancuso 8 жыл бұрын
Great to hear Sheldon! Most frame bottom bracket shells are MID, the 22mm is the inner diameter of the bearing for the crank spindle. I think 19mm is the most used spindle size and the new 24mm bearings are the least used. +Sheldon
@sdfbisd
@sdfbisd 8 жыл бұрын
Nah, it depends on your crank spindle size, if it's 19 mm then get a 19 mm bearing if it's 22 mm then get 22 mm.
