We've been hinting at this one for a while. We finally installed our Nature's Head Composting Toilet into Charlie, our 2005 Airstream Classic. Here is how it went, step by step!
We walk you through every step of the install process from removing the old toilet, finding constant 12 volt, venting out the wheel well and finally installing the new toilet into our Airstream.
Stay tuned for an update on how we like it and any tips and tricks we come up with along the way!

Nice job! I'm finishing up my shell off Excella restoration and opted for Nature's Head unit also. Completely covered the old Black tank space with new flooring so didnt have to go through your steps to cover the old sewer drain. You guys did a great job venting out the wheel well.

Nothing wrong with what you did but I'll make my own I'm not sure I could spend a lot of money on something that requires emptying a pee bucket constantly and grinding #2 up with no bag inside and all the other work u did hooking up fan the money involved but for u maybe you will love it so I'm not mocking or nocking what you've done but I going a little different route but thanks for the video.

how do you separate liquid from the solids ?
@AStreaminLife
@AStreaminLife 7 жыл бұрын
The natures head does it for us. There are holes for the liquids in the bowl that drain into a compartment. For solids there is a separate hatch you open in the bowl when the time is right. We don't really have to do anything!

This was very detailed. Thank you. Almost 1000 dollars for a toilet, but you must consider no need for water or chemicals makes it worth it. And no trips to the dump station.

Out the top of the airstream? We thought about that but it would have been too hard to route it. Venting it through the wheel well has worked great for us.

I see some room towards the wall where you could've moved your new toilet further back to create more room. Also, because of the location of the vent towards the outside below, wouldn't it stink up the area outside where you guys hangout?
@AStreaminLife
@AStreaminLife 7 жыл бұрын
We couldn't put the toilet all the way against the wall because we wouldn't be able to take off the whole lid while inside and we wanted to be able to do that. Luckily our vent is on the driver's side of the trailer so we don't smell anything on the curbside/patio when we're outside.

What about road dirt, snow, etc from the trailer tires? Will the tires throw debris against the vent, causing it to block up?
@AStreaminLife
@AStreaminLife 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob. Good question! We're worried about that as a well. If we find we're having issues we're going to figure out a shield/vent cover but for now we're going to see how it goes. We have some ideas percolating in the background. :)

great video, want to do this in my '72 Land Yacht but space seems very small to accommodate handle on the side too .. do you know if they make smaller units ? min width needed for your unit ? thanks !
@AStreaminLife
@AStreaminLife 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Nicholas. I don't think Natures Head makes smaller units but there are other manufacturers out there to check out. Here is Nature's Head's website: www.natureshead.net/ . We went with the smallest option they had (ie the Spider handle instead of the standard handle). Ours is 19" wide with the handle. The standard is 20.75" wide. Hope this helps!

thanks for the feedback .. i'll measure up .., any regrets after a few months now of using ... ? does the fan run 24/7? how much power is that drawing ? I tend to boondock , thx:)
@AStreaminLife
@AStreaminLife 7 жыл бұрын
No regrets! It's been really useful and we think it will be even better once we start boondocking. The fan needs to run all the time but only uses 1.7amps in a 24 hour period so the draw is miniscule. We don't think it will hold us back at all.

We do have some yes. We've been working on it with vinegar and hot water but there is some staining. If we had been better about cleaning the tank, in the beginning, I think it would be better. Not very noticeable when installed though.

Question? How long can you normally boondock and how much water do you have to bring. I am looking at buying and love Airstream but the water capacity worries me. I would like to stay away from campgrounds thinking I need 100G or better for 3 weeks out? Thoughts? I would compost and combine as you did also to conserve.
@AStreaminLife
@AStreaminLife 6 жыл бұрын
We can boondock for up to 2 weeks (which is often the max limit on BLM & National Forest Land). Our limiting factor is our waste water storage even though we combine both our gray & black tank. Combined we have about 80 gallons. Our fresh water tank is 65 gallons. When we start running low on fresh water we fill up to 7 gallon blue jugs we have and siphon them into our fresh water tank. We do this a few times. We talk a bunch about water conservation and what we do in these videos: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5ezq5mopcucmac and kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaLYhYuMbb56h7s and kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGOTYqiIbd56js0

The composting toilet was around $1000. We know some people who have made their own but we wanted one that separated the liquids and solids and they are harder to make/find. We really like this one but know that it is expensive and not for everyone.

No need to hook up exhaust fan. Just us coconut coir and open toilet hole once a day and run fan in ceiling to aerate to keep moisture down.

I'd love to have double the grey tank storage! I can gut animals, do all kinds of nasty jobs, but whew... Very interested to see how sanitary this this will be. I also wonder how this works compared to what European RVs use - the cassette toilet. I've seen that kind can just be taken into any bathroom and emptied. I don't know about cleaning them though. Ugh

Hi Taka Yama. We're actually loving the composting toilet so far (we'll be doing a video on it soon). Our least favorite part is emptying the liquids but it's pretty easy if you have a sewer drain or regular toilet nearby. The actual "compost" is super easy, and no smell. It really is just dirt. You also aren't supposed to clean the solids area between refilling it with fresh coconut coir since it helps with the next compost. So far so good.
