And so my run of good luck continues this week. I ended up installing a new reconditioned turbo and turbo actuator to my VW Crafter
My dash lit up on the way home from having the front cambers checked on the van, luckily for me I had my new Ediag YA201 ODB2 reader sat in the cab, using it for the first time it took seconds to diagnose a fault with the turbo actuator! then Lisa's little Fiat 500 developed a fault, too. When will this run of bad luck end?
take a look and see how we get on

Great video, thank you. I have a turbo fault too on my 7 year old Crafter, so I was planning on paying somebody else to fix it. However, after watching this vid, I'm half-confident I can do it myself! Wish me luck.

We literally had these lights on our first day into Scotland last Saturday. Took it to a garage who were adamant it was the turbo actuator as we were getting no boost/suction. New actuator only was £270 so your refurbed kit was much better value!! Anyway 3 days later actuator fitted and it ddnt fix the fault. A bit of searching on forums later and we took the plunge to take the van back and ordered the n75 sensor @ £60 from dark side developments who got it to us the next day. Fitted it and it’s solved! And managed to finish our holiday week driving the van 4 hours back home 😅. We’ve only had our crafter 6 months and have spent a small fortune on new pads and discs, new clutch, rear diff refurb and now this. But we still love it. Great video keep up with it, it’s a lovely van

Strangely enough, my light came back on a couple of days ago. I will look into the sensor. Thank you 😊 I'm glad I've changed the turbo unit as the acctuator was worn when we inspected it so it would have failed in the near future

Cool tool there the YD201 code reader.... I bought an Icarsoft CR pro Plus a year ago to reset some codes that my cheap reader could not do and it cost me the same as it would have to have STEALERSHIP do the resets for me. I have used it on our KIA van also and it too has paid for itself. Thanks for sharing. Bill - W3SI

your van is very much the same story as ?Viv-i-van, Sam.... ages spent doing a conversion, a nice spell where all goes well and then the poop hits the van and its goodnight vienna with the bank balance. I always like watching your fixing the engine videos cos it makes me realise I should have learned to do stuff like that and I need to get some knowledge- though there are things like your front wishbone work that is deffo physically beyond me. I have been thinking of getting an obd reader but what stops me is becoming paranoid and becoming addicted to checking every five minutes... Any hoo, i have managed to get on Viv's roof and finally fit the flexible solar cell though theres more tiger seal on me than the flippin panel.. As ever, much respect and bessy regs- Kenny

I've been using bluetooth/ble OBDII connectors for years. I can recommend one you can keep permanently plugged in - pair it to the phone and you will get loads more data (best Android app is Torque). I use a Vgate Pro now (been through all the cheap ELM ones!). Depending on your vehicle you can also change settings using these little bits of kit.

Oh, how I can relate, Sam. 🙄 My 2014 Crafter has the bi-turbo setup with a gummed up overboost-release-mechanism (I don't call it a wastegate as it is not one in the common sense). It sends the Crafter into limp mode if the turbo pressure exceeds the preset limit. After a stop and restart, the ECU is reset and it runs. I certainly could remove the unit and try to disassemble it, but with 170K miles on the clock, every nut and bolt will be frozen solid and I will most certainly bust some. We also have a reputable turbo reconditioner in Berlin (for a Crafter CKUB engine code, the turbo will lessen my wealth by GBP 700, plus a GBP 260 core charge - refundable upon return of the old unit). Still a far cry from the dealer turbo price (GBP 2,900). If I was 10 or 20 years younger and healthier, I'd replace this myself - I'd have the tools and the know-how. So I will have to spend another GBP 300 to get it swapped out. After an oil and filter change, it should be good to go again. All that will happen in the next couple of weeks. Sidenote: I did get all the gaskets, seals, clamps and new copper exhaust nuts from the VW dealer for around GBP 85. If you just have a boost problem and not a blown turbo (as on yours and mine), there is no need to replace the oil pipes for fear of debris in the system. On my bi turbo, new lines alone would cost another GBP 350 (!). We just did the MaxxFan installation - flooring, insulation, roof rack, solar and turbo swap need to be done by mid-May, as we do have a date in the Lake District National Park, right? 😁 Stay safe and cheers from Germany! 🚐☁🍀

Jeez Sam she’s def testing you these last few months. Still you won’t need to be the one consulting You Tube to know how to do jobs on it in the future, everyone will be consulting you! It seems to me the earlier 2.5tdi gives less trouble than the later 2 litre. Our 2012 2.5 blue tdi we’ve had for 6 yrs and 60,000 miles has had its moments with a NOx sensor and an adBlue tank heater but never left us stranded… yet! Hope that’s the end of your woes for now. You must have bought a lemon, my 2014 MWB 140k crafter camper has had little issues other than steering rack being replaced twice now, probably due to the big 17” black rhinos and bfg tyres? Had the pig tale warning and fixed it by replacing coolant pump B. I don’t want to jinx it though as vane pump is leaking and I might have a lot of parts failing one after the other going forward. I never drive on motorways due to an accident that happened many years ago where a few of my friends died. So basically I never go above 60 mph 2000 rpm and only drive on A and b roads so engine never strained but suspension and gearbox takes a hammering. I’m interested to know your driving style and if that maybe has an adverse effect on all these parts that keep failing? Do you leave the van sitting for long periods? That kills components. Cheers, thanks for the upload 👍

The reconditioned one comes with a guarantee that we used when the first one failed. Also, the reconditioned one was the same money as a second-hand unproven one, I think I made the right choice, I would always favour new or reconditioned parts when it comes to major components, How do you know when you have a good second-hand part?
