Today we're installing a super-rare Sonnet G4 upgrade card in a PowerBook Wallstreet G3, and upping the MHz from 266 to 500!
The PowerBook G3 Wallstreet is one of my favorite PowerBooks, not least because it was the last PowerBook ever with the rainbow Apple logo. This upgrade should bring it in line with PowerBooks and iBooks released years afterwards!
But did this upgrade survive being sealed in its original anti-static plastic for 20 years? What was the Sonnet upgrade experience new out of the box like? Let's find out!

I like how the WallStreet has a solid white Apple logo on the lid but the old rainbow logo on the inside. It's also noteworthy for being the only "Old World ROM" Mac to use the lower-pitched startup sound of the "New World ROM" systems.

@@thackythac All of the PowerBooks from the Wallstreet up wore the same white logo on the outside. The Lombard had a bronze keyboard, and the Pismo was the first Mac to sport a white logo on the inside and the outside giving us our current look. I think you may be thinking of the fabled "PowerBook 3500" which had the same motherboard as the original Kanga PowerBook. You could direct swap out the 603e daugterboard in a PowerBook 3400c for a G3 option. Therefore it would give you a PowerBook 3500 with the G3 chip. It was the only PowerBook "G3" where you could do that directly. The Kanga was a 3400 in an Armani suit, or in other words swapping out the VW beetle engine for an actual Porsche engine. A Beetle is cool yeah? But it's even cooler if you put in an engine out of the last air cooled Porsche 993 which just so happens to fit in the same engine bay. Same man... different suit and you'll look a million times happier with the G3 as compared with the 603e. As a mental note there are some compatibility issues for Kanga G3s because of that with OS X as Apple really did try to screw the pooch with OS X. There is no technical reason why a PPC Mac can't run OS X. In fact the betas did. It was a software limitation that stopped later Macs from booting OS X. There are some less than official ways to get OS X onto a Kanga however thankfully. Many people chose the Kanga because it had unofficial CardBus support.... so you could continue to use all of the same expansion cards you had all the way back to when you owned a PowerBook 190 or 190c... If that was the case for your usage and so it wasn't as weird of a crossover as some people thought. It was just a usage case machine like the last G5s that were still being sold into the intel era... If your software required it you could do it. In fact you could "downgrade" the Kanga all the way to OS 8 if needs be that your software required legacy Systems software but still have the benefit of the G3 making it one of the most versatile Macs ever released in spite of its limitations. Perhaps the only G3 option you would have had at the time if you needed software designed for System 7.6 with OS 8 technically being System 7.7.

These were one of the most convenient laptops ever made. Literally everything was modular and that's how they became one of the most popular laptops in the world... Especially for professionals in the 90s. This was literally the first computer I ever wanted, but couldn't afford at the time and the specifications for the late 90s were truly special. I'm pretty sure they called it a road warrior for a reason. You could take out the DVD drive and replace it with another battery... or hard drive... and the amount of card slots and ports it had was truly something special for the time.

That system made it into Thinkpads and some others, all with their own name for it. Was dang cool though, you could have a CDROM, a Floppy, a HDD or a battery in it, pick your poison. On thinkpads it made some with almost 10hrs battery life possible with powersave on and the right bay battery thing.

I wouldn't use AS5 in this case. it's semi-conductive and may have caused some of your problems. You can get a 25-gram (not 2.5!) tube off eBay of Ceramique 2 for like $7 out of Texas and I heavily recommend getting that over AS5 for applications where there are surface-mount components surrounding an exposed core die like this CPU has. I had all sorts of problems with my PDQ 233 when it had AS5 on the chip and everything went away when I put Ceramique 2 on it. You can also get your own favorite paste for this that isn't AS5 and it should do just fine the same, it's the issue of AS5 being semi-conductive that's an issue here, and it gets more conductive the hotter it gets. but I still recommend the tube of 25 grams of ceramique 2. it takes me a year or more to go through a tube of that stuff and it's cheaper than getting the small tube.

Great video. I had one of these machines from new as my work laptop and took it all around the world. It had remarkably good sound as I recall. I upgraded the hard drive (spinning) and you had to put a little mu-metal shielding as it could confuse the hall sensor that detected the lid closure. I ran it with OSX very successfully and remember the initial portion size limitation. It was my last work Mac as we were forced to move to PC's and I kept it as long as I could and longer than IT wanted me to. I resurrected it a few years back for fun and it still worked. The only difficult job on these machines is replacing the PRAM battery, you have to completely disassemble it to get to the battery.

when I do my msata upgrades on G3 laptops, I try to find ones that mount the msata on top, so that when I forgo the enclosure (or cut a hole into it) I can easily swap out the msata without having to take apart the computer again. On my clamshell iBook I cut a little hole in the metal cage as well to give me that easy access. File transfers are now a breeze. And if I got the Linux itch, it's no sweat, just pop in a new one, and spend hours installing Linux.

1) The controller chips in Macs can be really selective with the types of disks it will recognise. It's not unusual that it failed like that. It was probably just an incompatible controller chip on the hard drive. I've had perfectly good Corsair SSDs fail to boot on Macs before. Especially with older Macs there is less tolerance. It's best to try to find a drive with a controler chip that is specifically known Mac compatible. 2) It looks like the issue with your Wall Street is an outdated control panel/conflict. These chips rely upon the control panel to regulate the bus speed/cpu speed. Without it, your heat issue is probably a clock issue. It's probably trying to boot with some kind of weird bus/clock combination which is what is likely also causing your PowerBook to overheat. I've been down this road before when I used to build/repair Macs in the 90s. The heat tolerance of G3/G4 chips are really low and it's really easy to cook one of these CPUs also. Without the right bus/clock combination you're going to be overheating your Mac which is why it's running so unstable. Try OS 8.6 instead or find an updated control panel for the CPU. Also you may need to upgrade the cooling for that chip in that computer use case. 3) NONE of these upgrade companies were any good at working within the tolerances that are required. I wouldn't expect everything to work out of the box. Install a temperature monitor also (if you don't have one) so that you can check to see that you're not cooking your CPU. All of these bugs seem to be heat related... I watched your video a second time and it almost definitely is the control panel extension for it that is causing the bus error. It's probably trying to overclock/underclock your Mac which is causing the bus error. Either downgrade your OS to 8.6 or upgrade the control panel extension to a later version. 4) I'm not even sure I'd go past OS 9.1 with this combination... 9.2.2 has no added benefits over 9.1 and all of the bug fixes were for on the OS X side of things for classic. In fact OS 9 was just a bloated version of 8.6 with no real benefits what so ever. I know everyone has their favorite Mac OS versions on Classic Macs but I would really just stick with OS 8.6, particularly in this use case.

Neat. The WS/PDQ was always my favorite because the drive bays were more functional (native floppy support and both bays could accept a drive unlike the later models which could take only one drive, in the right bay), it has two PC Card slots, and IMO the keyboard is superior to the later models. I kinda wanted the G4 upgrade but they're really expensive so I kind of sour grapes'd it and got a 466MHz G3 instead, because honestly unless you're ripping MP3s or in PhotoShop all day and/or spending all your time in OS X there aren't any benefits to AltiVec and thus a G4 so a G3 is good enough for most uses. Also it usually runs cooler than a G4 and has better battery life (if your batteries still work, that is). There was a time that one of the upgrade purveyors (DayStar, IIRC) offered a G3 CPU swap that used the uncommon 83MHz variant of the WS processor module. I'd really like to get one of those.

Greetings from Australia Many years ago I had a PowerMac 6100/66 and it was great. Then I bought a sonnet 233mhz accelerator card and boy did it fly. However it only lasted for about 6 months before it died. I got another card after I discovered I couldn't live with a 66mhz machine anymore. That sonnet card lasted only a few months. Then I decided to upgrade to a newer machine and write off my losses. I later found out that sonnets upgrade cards were very flaky. I suspect that poor air flow was the culprit causing premature failure. Stay safe

I myself have not been able to get mSATA SSDs (with mSATA to PATA adapter) to work in my PDQ, so I would recommend only testing the CPU upgrade with a stock spinner HDD. That way you know the SSD isn't a cause of your headaches. Because in my machine with the stock CPU, the SSD causes all manner of unexplained problems. It's basically unusable. strangly I was not able to boot from my (burnt) install CD after installing a mSata-to-IDE adapter into my PDQ 233Mhz Wallstreet..when I removed the adapter it booted with the CD..I wonder if the original old 2 GB Toshiba HDD was internaly set to slave by default on the IDE connector somehow..

I wonder if you would have had success formatting the 128GB with a patched version of Drive Setup?

Always apply thermal compound all over any exposed CPU die area , a pea size is never enough in my opinion , to little can overheat any exposed die .

It's a sticker certifying that the modem is compliant to RF regulations from Industry Canada. It's the Canadian equivalent to "Complies with FCC Rules" stickers.

You could have unsealed it by simply unfolding the cardboard. And you could have reused it later this way.

Be really careful using arctic silver on CPUs with exposed caps. If you get that paste on a cap and short it, you'll have some unexpected instability. I recommend MX4, it's safe for gpus and exposed dies.

I found it useful and safer if I formatted hard drives in a separate G4 computer before installing it as an upgrade.

He really should go back to a CF card, as they do make 64GB CF cards for under $40, also the conductive thermal paste could also be a possible issue, along with the RAM. Anyone of those issues, or all 3 together.
