I’m on my 3rd winter with my wildpeak AT3Ws. I love them. I don’t do much mudding. Lots of snow in winter and dirt roads in summer. Also 30 min commute for work. The best all around tire I have used. The highway has worn them out faster than I would like but performance is worth it. Also. Pretty quiet for AT tires. Perfect tire for me. Can’t wait to put a new set in next year

In the desert SW where I’m at, all terrains aren’t as sexy as MT, but they handle everything including snow and long trips to the trail. I’m running 10 ply BFG KO2s. I don’t trust anything else, and no problems for over a decade. This includes Moab, Death Valley, Great Basin, and dozens of insane trails all over the SW.

I have been runing the AT3Ws for years now on my 80 series Land Cruiser (I live in Minnesota as well) and they have been fantastic. Remember that along with the siping they are a "3 Peak" rated tire which means they have a softer rubber compound that does not get hard when cold. I think that along with the tread pattern and siping make it an awesome winter tire. I have been to Utah, Montana, Colorado etc, on all types of terrain and they are amazing. One of the best things I like about this tire is th tread lasts forever and they are quiet from new until now even.

Falken wildpeaks have been my favorite tires I’ve ever had on my 4runner. Perform much better than ko2’s in heavy snow and rain and just as good off road on the trails and the on road is super smooth and quiet

That is exactly what I have heard. Do you use load C or E?
@andyham6094

@@OverlandEngineer I have load c. I don’t have any crazy weight added on besides sliders and skids. I don’t have a crazy rack or roof top tent or steel bumpers or bunch of stuff like that. It’s my daily driver and a weekend warrior. If I had a rooftop tent and front and rear bumpers then I’d def get load E tho. But C has been great and super nice on road and never had an issue off road or in any weather condition.

I ran Geo's for years on my jeep. Switched over to Dynapro AT2's. Better traction in snow and better wear. Also load rated E. From -35 to 110 they've worked flawlessly.

The Load E will be stiffer as they can carry more weight. The AT3W should also be 3peak-snowflake rated so they are 1 step below dedicated winter tires. Siping gives more edges for the tire to contact the ground.

My biggest gripe about the Wildpeaks is how comparatively heavy they are. The load C Wildpeaks in 285/70/17 are almost 64 lbs! Oddly, the E-load tires in the same size are 58lbs. Other than that, they're great, and seem to perform as well as my c-load KO2's (which incidentally are 51lbs in 285/70/17). That said, if I'm going to go that heavy, my next tire will likely be the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT's (and probably when I go to 34's or 35's and re-gear) - they are AMAZING in nearly every condition on or off road!

Cool! I was thinking about some similar, but just the opposite. Going from Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws to Yokohama Geolander MT. It rains here but no snow. Was also wondering how the G003s would handle in sand. I've been through 2 sets of KO2s, but prefer the Wildpeaks, cuz they don't slip on wet pavement. Just my $0.02...
@OverlandEngineer

Great 2 cents! I presume the geolandars would do quite well in sand. Probably better when they are new rather than worn down. Geolandars for the most were good in rain but avoid huge puddles going 70 haha

I have the G003 on my 3rd gen, and absolutely love them. I've been through sandy/gravel areas at the river and they did pretty good. I wasn't necessarily offroading, was just trying to get to a fishing spot. So I wasn't aired down or anything. I got pretty deep in the loose gravel (8-10" deep rut) and had to use 4hi to get out. But once in 4hi, it was effortless. Once the K02 on my wife's 5th gen wear out, I'm going G003 for sure.

@@OverlandEngineer yes sir. San Antonio area. We've had snow once in 30 years and it was in 2020 lol. I'm a first responder so had to drive back and forth in it every day. I cannot comment on how well the tires performed because: A) My ABS/TRAC module is out so I don't have ABS or traction control, just good old fashioned foot control. B) I've never driven in the snow, so couldn't compare to past experience C) There was alot of ice mixed with the snow, so it was slick. I was full pucker the entire drive......every drive. But yea dry stuff these tires rock 🤣

Nice vid. Wondering what your set up is to clear 285/70/17.
@OverlandEngineer
@OverlandEngineer 3 жыл бұрын
All depends on your offset! So I have a 3" lift and with zero offset rims you just have to do a little bit of trimming in front, push your fender liner forward and drill a new hole for the plastic clip, and take off front mud flaps or bend them with a heat gun. In this video I have zero offset rims but 1.25" spacers which means about -32 mm of offset. They are now much harder to clear without heavy trimming, a body mount chop, and everything I mentioned before. I liked this setup because I plan to go even bigger eventually so I had to do the BMC. But, with spacers and this size tire it still looks awesome and I can get by without regearing. That was maybe a longer answer than you wanted haha.

@OverlandEngineer 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that dawned on me too. But I think the weight of the rings is hopefully pretty distributed around the rim…I guess we will have to see. It’s been fine so far. I think if you have all 4 then it should be fine but might feel weird to have some tires with rings and some without

Those wildpeaks are also dedicated snow tires if I'm not mistaken. It has the mountain peak snow flake logo on the side wall. Your wheels are really nice and hiding part of them with that protection ring will lessen it. I don't like the look at all and your tires are already black

Can someone explain to me the actual REAL benefits of installing a 285 tire? I watched so many videos now, and I have taken my truck with regular 265s to offroad many times, and I can't really find any real advantage, UNLESS you take these 4runners for some extreme rock climbing/mudding. But if you do that, you don't use all terrains, you go with mud tires, and a completely different suspension setup. What I trying to say here is, 99 % of the rigs out there only do low to mid-difficulty trials, and overlanding. What can you do, again, with a 285 that you couldn't with 265s? Wheels weigh more, you lose power and acceleration, you lose MPG, and steering on highways gets a little dangerous, on top of that, 285 are more expensive... So, is it only for the looks? I have done possible 5k miles of offroad trails with 265s and I never got stuck or faced a situation where my tires were a problem.
@OverlandEngineer
@OverlandEngineer Жыл бұрын
While your point is valid, most guys talk about the ease off-roading going from 285s to 35s...Its the same thing in my opinion. Most people don't like the look of a 4Runner lifted on 265s so proportions are a big component. But every obstacle gets easier and if you can do everything in a 265 you are probably still getting a little sketchy with certain obstacles so you likely are running full skids. Another huge benefit is ground clearance. Being on 35s this winter, I could snow wheel much better than guys on 285s, let alone 265s, the snow gets deep and its incredibly easy to high center. Also the on road benefits of deep snow and larger tires.
@Ulghart
@Ulghart Жыл бұрын
@@OverlandEngineer ok, makes sense, though that;s very situational. If you have deep snow, then yeah, I see the point. I've seen many 4runners in the deep south doing trails with lifted rigs and 285s....and right next to them, a Subaru crosstrek doing the same trail....
