I love the use of extension cord! I am always telling people how extension cord is a cheap way to get thicker gauge wire. Also if you need 3 conductors, they are already packaged nice, neat, and protected in the outer sleeve!

Ummm, heavier wires etc, which are for INSIDE a house, not a car, is never a good idea, especially spliced like that. Heavier wire can also mean less current run...which may not be what is needed. Run a correct wire gauge and put the wire covers around it. make sure too, you don't get pinched anywhere...so run it up into the dash rather than across the floor where you get a lot of carpet rubbing. Just an FYI...car fires are not fun...I have seem many crunch stuff and regret it later. Cheers!

I'm.... I'm not even sure where to start here. There are 2 main differences in copper wire, the Gauge of wire which most are familiar with, and the Strand of wire, whether it be fine, thick, or solid. There's also differences in insulator material, but that's usually not an issue. I also would not recommend solid wire that is meant for house electrical as it is too stiff for moving applications, but Extension Cord wire that I used is fine strand 14 - 12 gauge which is just as good as any other copper wire and plenty for my application. As for as wire thickness is concerned, it is ALWAYS better to go with a larger thickness if size permits. More conductive material means more surface area for current to flow since there is less resistance. When wires are too small for the intended current they will heat up and in extreme cases the insulation will catch fire so bigger is better. So yes, proper wire gauge is important as is heat shrink to keep wires protected. No carpet in this jeep so no worries, but again proper location and insulation will take care of that, factory runs wires under the carpet all the time. Just make sure it's properly protected, secured, and not in high traffic areas. I've also got a fuse on this setup so in a worst case scenario if this shorts out it will pop a fuse and all will be good.

Lol, you should NOT see that. My buddy was smoking when I started recording, no wiring issues here. You better check for a short or wire gauge that is too small. Don't use cheap fuses either, ones from harbor frieght don't pop.

Is this outlet providing constant power? How about installing a switch on it? What type of switch is more suitable?
@NickInTimeFilms
@NickInTimeFilms 7 жыл бұрын
My setup runs straight from battery power so it is on all the time. There are a few ways to turn it off. Easiest would be to run the positive wire to one of the ignition slots in the fuse block as I believe one is open so it will only turn on with the key. Second best is to run it off a relay and switch the coil side on or off for manual control. Running power directly through the switch isn't recommended becuase it will get hot and not last very long.

Smashing, never enough power outlets. If thats wire for 120 volts the electron charge wont want to move at 12v....He He :-D. . You would need a massive zenna and it would lose power, nope :-) If its ignition switched then you would have to leave the jeep on to flattern the battery, i dont think that is likely. If you want it ignition switched but more power than the ignition could handle, use a relay and seperate fuse to the battery. Gotta love relays, unless they play up, then its Grrrrrrr :-D
@NickInTimeFilms
@NickInTimeFilms 8 жыл бұрын
+zx8401ztv I've got it running to constant hot because I ran out of ignition ports, but some kind of low voltage cut off would be a nice backup. After using it on the trails, it's nice having the cooler running even when the truck is off.
@zx8401ztv
@zx8401ztv 8 жыл бұрын
+NickInTimeFilms Hmm perhaps a small op-amp chip with a preset voltag trigger level could drive a relay coil, so it only works if the voltage is above a certain level. I dont think the cooler is such a good idea while the truck is off, i cant see any advantage really, just a flatter battery. But im a boring old sod so what do i know Ha Ha :-D
