Spent more time trying to find the last shingle. Just cut one!

The shingle shuffle to find the right fit! I swear there’s one that fits. Oh well, Where’d I leave the utility knife and straight edge. Those clips look like a time saver.

Makes sense that if your help (my daughter) sorts the shingles by width, then it should be simple to find one that fits. Not always that simple. I don't doing siding every day. I didn't want to put a lot of nail holes in my shingles. The clips were perfect and made the job simple. I know people who can use a utility knife and cut a shingle perfectly. I'm always amazed. (Especially when they are weaving a corner.) Every time I try that I seem to wreck the shingle. (And at the cost of shingles, that's not a good thing.) Thanks for your comment.

No drainage plane behind the shingles? How do they air? Who makes the support clip that you slide under the shingles?
@stevebarr65347 жыл бұрын
Gary24752, All that white that you see in the video is Tyvek. To quote from an old press release: "The newest component of the DuPont(TM) Tyvek(R) Weather Barrier System, DuPont(TM) Tyvek(R) CommercialWrap(R) D is a vapor permeable weather barrier with a specially engineered textured surface that helps create a more efficient drainage plane. DuPont Introduces Sustainable Innovations for Commercial Buildings" The shingles are over a year old and are airing fine and beginning to age into the light grey weathered color. I knew of a house that did not use anything behind the shingles (no drainage plane at all). The whole house had to be disassembled down to the studs - outside and inside - and reassembled with new interior and exterior walls and insulation. Those support clips are called: "Shingle & Shake Easy Installation Tool" (sbccedar.com/en/05_products/05_other-products-06.html) I have no connection with the company. I bought mine at a local lumber yard here.

Good job , but to save time, cut the piece to fit at the end.

Michel, thanks for your comment. I have seen guys cut a perfect 1/8th of an inch off of shingle. (I've even seen guys who can cut the edge on a weave corner perfectly. Some people just got super skills.) For some reason, every time I try cutting a shingle, I get a less than perfect cut. So, I've just stuck with looking for the right width. I got my daughter to sort the shingles into stacks of about 25 shingles that went from widest to narrowest. This made finding the right size fairly easy. But there always seems to be the row that takes a lot of shuffling to get them to fit perfectly.

It is amazing how all these cedar shingle video show buildings with no doors or windows.
@stevebarr65345 жыл бұрын
Jollyandwaylo, astute comment. When I did the project, I used azek corner boards and trim all around (I'd like to upload a picture of the final product, but can't figure out how to add a pic here.) There is some cutting around the windows and doors and also under the gable end trim boards. I haven't looked but I bet there's some videos showing those techniques.

Wait until you have a zig zag wall. An inside then an outside corner close together. Very tricky.
@stevebarr65346 жыл бұрын
Depends on the dimensions. If it's really close then I'd cover the whole zig and zag with corner board. If the zig were very close to the previous outside corner, then you may end up with a very wide piece of white/trim on the zig and likewise on the zag. But that situation is unlikely. Instead, I would install a short trim strip (1 x 2) at the end of the zig and then shingle up to that piece both ways. If I had a narrow space that ran up the wall (as sometimes happens next to a window), I just run a bunch of shingles through the table saw to fit the width and do that whole area with full pieces. That area can be time consuming in that you would want to carry the shingle line around the corner with a small square (unless you made up a shingling board template/ruler).

Don't try to find the right size shingle at the end overlap two shingles and trim them together using a razor knife

Come on, just cut a shingle man! More than half of this video (6 minutes!!!) is you trying to puzzle together the last 3 shingles to fit?
@stevebarr65346 жыл бұрын
Could have. But my daughter (who took the video) can sort a bundle of shingles very fast. It just became a "thing" with me to try to avoid cutting. (I paid for R&Rs and the Canadians did a great job with the shingle, so I figured I just take advantage of all their efforts.) Sorry that it bummed you out. steve

You know you can CUT those shingles.....
@stevebarr65348 жыл бұрын
Rob, You are 100% correct. My daughter can organize a bundle of shingles into stacks that are organized by size in a couple of minutes. Takes me less time to find the right sized shingle than it would to cut one. Thanks for the suggestion

Steve Barr it took you 5 mins and 30 seconds to find the last one! it literally would have taken 30 seconds to cut one!!!!
