Well you reduced the effective area of that flashing by about 50% with that nail placement. Shoot for the edges next time guys, or it’s just a waste of money and time

We used to run a layer of ice&water down the edge of the valley&chip our corners

Put down ice and water before the valley so any nails are automatically sealed

If you get significant amounts of rain the valley carries enough water that venting isn't enough. You can do whatever you want in a dryer climate. That won't last up north especially with that bleeder course

This stuff was installed on a customer of mine's low-pitch roof in the last couple years here in NE Ohio. The rain runoff gains crazy speed and easily overflows the splash guard on the gutter. His main entry door is directly below that and it's getting soaked. Is there a way to slow the water flow on these?

I get what youre saying but when you put nails into the bleeder shingle thats ran along the valley, the nails end up being around the area where he nailed, but i agree, should only be nailing on the edges when putting the valley metal in.

@Ohnij 3D should be hitting the nail zone on the shingle still, and when youre running shingles across you dont put any nails past the nail zone on the bleeder. Run your shingles 3ish finger widths away from the center (assumming youre using W metal valley where it already kicks it out a few inches) and then the shingle exposure, makes it more close to a 12" away from the valley from where a nail is. Thats the way ive always done it (i roof in vancouver, bc) and the way ive seen everyone do it. Well besides the few hacks ive called out on

@Josh the nail strip has nothing to do with the starter shingles running up the valley. You nail them at the very edge of the valley metal, and only needs like 3 nails per shingle. When you shingle over it your nails will go in the right spot you want to be minimum 8 inches away from center of the valley. Also should be a bead of tar under the starter course. Second generation roofer in both sask and alberta.

@Ohnij 3D im the same but ive roofed both in sask, and now do roofing in vancouver. Two completely different climates. One gets snow half the year, the other gets non stop rain for half of the year 😅 and yeah i get what you mean with the nails but i always tack mine in the nail zone, yeah the shingles running into it are going to put more nails into the bleeder but ive come across countless times where guys walk on the bleeder shingles and knock them loose and i dont notice it till after ive already put shingles on it

I used to think shingles as starter strip was ok too but I have peeled roofs off and seen the nails rusted out there. Probably shouldn't be using shingles as starters.

Apparently it doesn't matter where the nails are if it doesn't rain Otherwise don't run the Cheater course. Water gets in between the seams and is trapped by the tarline.i see it all the time. But its fast and give the impression that you made nice cuts

Nails are too close to valley… use aluminum nails for metal valleys they won’t rust and then use tar or black tar caulk on each nail… should be 6inches or more from valley…
