gilkesisking and @Random Dude, can I do programming on a laptop bc I want to buy a ps5 next year?
@Kasiarzynka
@Kasiarzynka 4 жыл бұрын
@@edboss36 I'm not sure why you'd even need to ask that question. Of course you can program on a laptop, a laptop is just a portable PC and apart from the size of components that are being put into it (plus the fact that most of them are going to run on lower voltage to reduce battery usage). You can program on a Laptop or a normal PC, on Windows, Linux or macOS, in any programming language you want, as long as you can install an interpreter or a compiler on it, depending on the language. Obviously, the better the CPU (or GPU, if you go for some GUI program, especially something like a game) and the RAM, the faster the code can be compiled/interpreted and executed.
@jimdaniels4595
@jimdaniels4595 4 жыл бұрын
@@edboss36 So, I gather you wanna save up and buy PS5 and have something for programming as well. In any stage of programming you might be, be it a professional or a student, get a laptop with great battery life, Ryzen 5/i5 at least and as much RAM as you can get. Also, it is always better to get a laptop where you can upgrade the RAM later. If it is 8 today, maybe in 6 months you save up and buy and upgrade to 16. Two points to note here, firstly, Windows is paid software. How do YOU pay for it in a laptop? The price includes that. Same laptop without Windows OS costs cheaper. In fact, Dell and Lenovo are slowly selling good specs one with Linux systems, not Windows. Consider that a 10k INR price difference. Thats about 130 USD. Secondly, Apple software can only be developed through Macs. Non Apple devices cannot make apps for iPhone. However, if you do not intend to do that right now, you are fine. Rather much better off. Because a good MacBook might eat up your PS5 budget. Once you decide to go this route of Linux. Have a spare machine. Install PopOS. Look at tutorials. Read the docs. It is very straightforward. If you face any challenge whatsoever, put the error in any search engine and you'll see results. Pick the one that applies and carry on. It will be resolved eventually. Finally, you should have a system working. And this is a 10 minute process with new hardware. Now, go and look for articles like "X Things to do after installing Y" where Y is what you installed. Only follow command line instructions. This would install some software and packages that ensure a breeze in operation. But thats not the point. The point is to be comfortable with the command line. This helps that. Happy learning. Whichever you go. Also, You can game AAA on Mac with some mid to low settings. Don't let anyone put any OS or hardware in a category on use basis. You can do anything in anything. Except for Apple Devs. They doomed lmao.

hey man long time viewer first time commenter, I just wanted to throw my hat into the ring and tell you some of my thoughts primera, para mis hermanos de espania: Mate is pronounced maté, the distro was made in Spain, sorry I dont mean to sound pretentious but just a heads up. 2) i dont think matte is a good choice for a lightweight distro especially for a laptop with 1gb ram, personally I would go with FreeBSD or NomadBSD (this comes with a desktop environment) using Spotify through SpotifyD however if you are more comfortable with Ubuntu/a GNU-Linux distro with a desktop environment in the box I would go with Lubuntu as LXDE tends to be lighter than Matte. Also you are very intelligent so when you figure out Arch maybe this would be a good machine to revisit try again with Arch. 3) linux distros come as .iso which are flashed to usb sticks, which basically means (really simplified here) that they use the entire usb stick as a hard drive to boot a very light OS that then installs the main OS on the main drive of the computer. the reason why you cannot put multiple distros' iso on a single drive is because it is the equivalent of putting multiple OS on one drive, you need to partition off the drive first to hold multiple iso. There are tools for this like MultiBootUSB (itsfoss.com/multiple-linux-one-usb/). 4) at 6:28 it shows that you are installing the OS to a 4gb drive when (according to amazon) the machine has 160GB, so I think you might have been installing the OS to the USB stick instead of the hard drive of the computer. Though I could be wrong about this as I do not own that computer. otherwise great video, love your work, keep up the amazing channel

Hi Kalle, seeing this video brings back memories. I had to revive my desktop computer when I was a student (in 2008), failing to do so meant buying a new one and money was scarce. Fortunately I found a live CD in a Linux magazine that contained the desktop version of Hardy Heron, and that was my smartest move of this summer. After that I have reconverted a few old PCs for the sake of recovering old data or making a fresh start (one being an ASUS eeePC, I assume it's quite close to the notebook you use in this video, they came out in the same range in the same time frame). It's often trial and error, browsing forums and documentation. On my eeePC I finally installed the OS on a USB stick and that does the job (good idea, the hard drive died shortly after). Sometimes you struggle in the install to format / partition your drives correctly, sometimes it's just something you miss in the configuration. Normally with standard xubuntu or lubuntu install you're covered on old hardware. Did you get it working after all?
@zakcodes3507
@zakcodes3507 4 жыл бұрын
The reason why you couldn't put more than one distro on your USB key is that each distro come in an ISO file. An ISO file is an image of an entire disk (ex.: USB drive, SSD, HDD) not an image of one or many partitions. Because of that, each ISO will take up your full USB drive and overwrite everything else on it including any other distro previously burned on it. If you want more than one distro on your USB it, I've found this article that explains how to use "MultiBootUSB": itsfoss.com/multiple-linux-one-usb/. Have fun!

Seems odd that the drive in the laptop would be a 4 gig one (iirc they were typically 16 gigs flash memory), which leads me to believe you are trying to install the OS to the USB memory (more likely to be 4 gig), which could also explain why it 1. refuses to repartition, 2. refuses to boot after an "installation".

Try to manually partition the hard drive during the installation. Select the internal hard drive (usually it is /dev/sda ) . Delete all existing partitions and create a new one (/dev/sda1 with ext4 file system) and mount it at /. Then make sure to select your hard drive (/dev/sda) as the main device to install the grub bootloader.

If you look up the specification of this netbook, you will see that it is based on an Atom N455 processor (EDIT: actually there were a few different processors, but they were all 32 bit Atom models), which is 32 bit. So only a 32 bit distribution can possibly work. That means that there is no hope for installing regular Ubuntu, since there is not 32 bit version of that anymore. Some other flavors of Ubuntu do support 32 bit still. However, for a machine like this I would normally switch to something based directly on Debian, like Debian itself or MX Linux.

Great effort Kalle, it must have been pretty frustrating, luckily you were at the cottage and could relax. One thing I noticed during partitioning was that it looked like the hard drive wasn't being recognized. Each time you went to partition the partition manager showed 4GB, which would be the USB key. I remember running into something like this (I think it was also with Linux Mint). I don't remember if I used Xubuntu instead or whether I went with a 32bit version (some of the netbooks of that era were 32bit). If you use a 32bit version of Xubuntu you'd need to use something a bit older as newer versions of Xubuntu only support 64bit: torrent.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/bionic/release/desktop/xubuntu-18.04.5-desktop-i386.iso.torrent. BTW there is spotify for Linux, so if you get things going again you might want to give it another go! Good Luck!

Hey, I hope you read this comment. WARNING: THIS METHOD WILL DELETE ALL THE DATA ON THE DRIVE I installed ubuntu on my laptop and I was getting the same error. this is how I fixed it: 1. Get a Ubuntu Flash Drive(use etcher or Rufus) 2. Boot into the USB drive from the laptop. 3. Choose the 'Try Ubuntu" option. 4. Open GParted and format the entire drive(Internal Hard Drive) 5. Choose the New option to create a new partition. 6. Try installing Ubuntu again. If you run into an error, format and create a new partition again through the installer. Hopefully, this works for you.

Looks you are new to Linux (even after trying to install arch if memory serves right ) you need something simple for this project though so Slax is the way to go First, go to slax.org and download the correct iso (32 or 64) This is copy-pasted 1)Copy the entire /Slax/ directory to your USB drive. If you are using Windows, you will get for example E:\slax\ just make sure you are on your USB drive now and not on your local hard disk. 2) Now navigate to directory /slax/boot/ on your USB drive. In Windows, it will be E:\slax\boot\ for example. Use Explorer or any other file manager for this task. 3) While you're in the boot directory, locate file bootinst.bat (or .sh for Linux) Run it by double-clicking it. *It will set up your USB to boot.* (copy-paste ends ) now to install it on your laptop (steps 1 to 3 installed it on your USB) 4)install GParted to your Slax installed in USB (this is not needed just for simplicity's sake) apt-get install gparted (in terminal) 5)Wipeout your laptop with GParted and make a new ext4 portion. 6)copy the contents of USB (sr0 or something like that in file explorer) to your laptop's partition and run that bootinst.sh you should be golden (after reboting make sure google how to make slax persistent )

Maybe if you took out the drive and installed linux from another pc then put it back in. If you want to keep windows to dual boot, I suggest defragmenting the drive first, shrink and create an empty partition on the drive to install linux.

The problem coul'd be the processor architecture or bios chip architecture, check it. If 32bits you'll need the correct ISO. Had same issue installing linux on old devices. New Linux distros can lack 32 bits support, not all of than.

Hi Kalle, Probably you have succeeded already in installing Linux on your Dell Inspiron mini. I have the same laptop with a 240 GB HDD. I installed and used Linux Mint 19.3 xfce and Debian 10 xfce, both 32 bit. These use around 230 mb of RAM. 64 bit OS is not required with 1 GB of RAM. Probably there is some mistake which is not clear from the video. 1. Make the bootable USB with Rufus or Etcher. 2. Try live. 3. Install in legacy BIOS mode, not UEFI. 4. At least 8 - 10 GB of disk space is required. Thank you for your video

I had similar errors Try getting lubuntu or linux mint although my initial success was with lubuntu. I think (at least in my case) it turned out to be a problem with the processor. It was just ridiculously old and had to have support for a certain processing method. Sorry I wish I remembered more it was very long ago ^^;

Having twenty years of Linux experience I still see those issues alot. Try Debian, it works in most cases. Nevertheless it took too much time and patience in the past so I stopped servicing regular computers and work with Raspberry Pi 4 devices only.

Try with Lubuntu as way to get even more lighter than using Ubuntu Mate, in the worst cases you can try with one of the older builds of Lubuntu to run it everywhere, I was able to install it on a PC with 384MB of RAM to use it as a "media center" not to much of it due to the lack of ram but it can be used to play music and watch some photos, hope this helps, really nice mood in your video, good luck!

Try this once: create an empty disk partition for installing the linux environment(like seprate the partition and delete the partition) create an ISO drive with " MBR partition scheme"(since these old pc's have MBR partition schemes over GPT partition schemes) [I would recommend using RUFUS to create the ISO its worked really well for me] make sure this time to only have the desired ISO image burned on the usb drive and nothing else on it. installing linux environments is really tricky especially on older devices as so much variables come into play. There is no single assured way; just a lot of trails and errors lol still hurts my head thinking about the time I've wasted**

I would suggest using Rufus to burn the ISO onto the flash drive. Distros for that kind of hardware: Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Puppy Linux, or perhaps an older LTS perhaps something with Unity rather than GNOME
