Thanks for this helpful video! I'm running linux on a chromebook as well and the installation went smoothly for me. The issue I'm running into is how large the muse sounds download is. Is it possible to store the muse sounds files on external storage (micro SD card) and have them run properly in musescore? I just downloaded muse strings and it appears to be several GB, and there is no way I can fit the rest on my 64GB chromebook.
@OutsideShoreMusic
@OutsideShoreMusic Жыл бұрын
If you're handy with Linux at all, you can mount the drive via ChromeOS ("Manage Linux sharing") and then set up /srv/muse-hub to be a symbolic link ("ln -s") to a folder on the external drive. FWIW, though, I have all of Muse Sounds on my 64GB Chromebook. They take up "only" 15 GB or so, and ChromeOS doesn't need much nor does Linux itself, so its really just about how much is left to temporarily cache your Google Drive files. I'm finding it's working fine.

So now I have Musescore working, however, it doesn't open when I click it. The only way to get there is by typing mscore4portable in the terminal which I don't really mind. But that's a bit ... inconvenient. Any suggestions?
@OutsideShoreMusic
@OutsideShoreMusic Жыл бұрын
I can't think of any good reason for that. When you ran the "install", did you see any error messages? You try removing it "mscore4portable remove") and then repeating the process, and make sure you pay attention to any error messages that appear. Then head to the official Support forum on musescore.org and start a new post and give more info on your system and also paste int the console log from the install.

@OutsideShoreMusic

Muse Hub does not install or update MsueScore itself on Linux - only on Windows and macOS. So the explicit update command is the simplest way. You could instead download the updated version manually and install it in the same manner as the previous version, but that's unnecessary extra work.

Hello! To add chord symbols or RNA, see that section of the Handbook, in the Text chapter. Note that it applies to the MuseScore notation software, not "MuseScore Pro" which is totally separate - a website subscription and app for viewing scores there (not an editor at all).

Yes, you can have both. But I think you are misunderstanding something - MuseScore 4 certainly still has a synthesizer (or it wouldn’t be able to play sounds), and it still supports Soundfonts. The only restriction is that you can not currently switch between individual sounds *within* a single soundfont, so if your custom soundfont isn’t GM compatible, you’ll need to split it into individual files. MuseScore can run on any Chromebook that supports Linux - which are all Chromebooks made in the past several years, unless they are "managed" systems where a system administrator has disabled Linux support (e.g., school-owned machines). But ARM-based Chromebooks required the "unofficial" build above and isn't guaranteed to work, and won't support Muse Sounds. So I'd stick to Intel-based Chromebooks. I recommend a "Core" processor over the lower-class, but it doesn't have to be particularly high-end.

@@anthony7749 So, are you on a Chromebook, or a “regular” Linux system? It could be there was some recent update I am not aware of that is causing a problem, or it could be your update went awry somehow. This message appears when try running the “.deb” file for Muse Sounds Manager after downloading it?

@OutsideShoreMusic yes I am using a chromebook, and yes it happens after using the Deb file, I made sure it was, maybe it could be the update I don't know though

Which step specifically are you talking about? Downloading Muse Sounds can take a very long time (over an hour), since it is 15 GB of data. But it should show a progress indicator. Might take a minute or two for theprogress indicator to appear.

Yes, I understand that for certain distributions there might be issues. Please check the Muse Hub issue tracker at musehub.zendesk.com, and if you don't see your specific case already, be sure to report it there.

Sadly my school completely blocked it.. I don't understand why. I might have to ask an admin to download it. I don't actually take a piano class, but I play piano at home and it's so much easier on a computer rather than a phone and this is the only one I have sadly. Let's hope they will let me get it 😭🙏

I am guessing your machine uses an ARM processor instead of Linux. We're still working on making an official ARM build available. Meanwhile, try these unofficial builds: github.com/Pi-Apps-Coders/files/releases/download/large-files/MuseScore-4.0.1.230161436-aarch64.AppImage for 64-bit, github.com/Pi-Apps-Coders/files/releases/download/large-files/MuseScore-4.0.1.230161436-armv7l.AppImage for 32-bit. Let us know if they work for you (the 64-bit versions works great on my Lenovo Chromebook Duet).

So after redoing the process again, turns out on some models it will make the icon but will not automatically pin is to the bookshelf, so you might have to search for it through your apps. Thank you so much btw, there are tons of students in my bands that have chromebooks that will appreciate this greatly!

Exactly, sorry if I didn’t make that clear! The app is installed and can be run from the launcher but if you want it pinned to the shelf you need to do so while running it, same as for other apps.

@@gabriellakohler8474 Sounds like you're trying to *open* it instead of *download* it? But that shouldn't happen unless you've *already* downloaded it. If you are sure you haven't downloaded it yet and for some reason it is trying to open it directly from the web - that should be impossible, but maybe you've configured things in an unusual way - try right-clicking the file name on the web site where you are downloading from, and choose "save link as". Then be sure to choose the "Linux files" folder and follow the rest of instructions as per the video.

Well, if something goes wrong, I wouldn't expect simply repeating the same steps would fix it. What specifically goes wrong? See the video description for info about creating ".local"; also as per the other comments, some systems may require you to install libfuse2.

Did you do anything unusual when you installed Linux? The default installation should work just fine. If you run "head -1 /etc/os-release" does it report something other than Debian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye)? If so, check docs.appimage.org/user-guide/troubleshooting/fuse.html for advice on installed FUSE. But I've never heard of anyone needing to do that on a Chromebook before. You might try asking on a Chromebook-specific help forum somewhere.

If the “chmod” succeeded but the next command failed, then you have a typo in that next command. Make it is is *precisely* the same as what I show - slash not balkcslash, capitalization matters, spaces exactly and only where they are in my example, etc.
