I did this a while back. My carpet and swats looked great but they reeked of sulfur. That bolt on the trans tunnel holds the bottom of the heater box. To make space after removing the bolt you have to take out the dash and disassemble the heater box.. I had my dash out so I could replace all the heater/ac foam seals and to run a custom PW/PL/PM harness but there was no way I was removing the heater box just to slide the old carpet out and new carpet in. I'm sure you've noticed by now that the road/wind noise now comes more from the cowl, A/B pillars, rocker panels and roof. I used 3M Rigid foam in the A/B pillars, rocker panels and floor pan bracing. I used 3M Flexible foam between the roof sheet metal and bracing and the applied some vibration and sound deadening before reinstalling the headliner. Because I have ac and don't need fresh air coming through the upper L/R dash vents, I sealed off the cowl openings for those vents. You mentioned possibly adding some more black to your doors. Miata NA door arm rest/pulls come in black. 2 of the 3 mounting points are the same as the 86-93 B's.

Yeah after looking all around, I definitely noticed that nothing there would move unless I took out the dash and everything behind it so I def didn’t wanna do that. Cutting was the easy way for me to go. I’m definitely going to leave your comment pinned because you wrote a lot of good tips I’m going to revisit to help with the noise. Thank you for the info

I just replaced my carpet...finally finished today. It was a 3 day job!!! That was absolutely the hardest job I have done in my Mazda. It looks good, but I did experience a few issues and kinda messed up in a few areas. I think I will eventually replace the carpet again sometime down the road, but so far, it is a huge improvement over the nasty 34 year old factory carpet that was in there. Thanks for the video, it was super helpful!

Thanks for the video. So after about a year how well does the carpet with the backing help with the heat?
@FlakeGarage

Living in Texas I don’t think it has helped much as far as heat goes but it definitely has help lessen metal noises from the truck

Did the sound absorber mat make much of a difference?

It made the truck have a little less road noise since it’s a bit more solid sounding
