Thanks for sharing the progress! Love seeing how other people set up their systems. Kinda gives me some ideas... 😁 You asked about the order of the fuses. I would probably keep the positive and negatives together. That way if you need to work on a specific string, you don't have to count fuzes to make sure you disconnect the positive and negative for the same string.

NICE! Yeah these boxes seem to be better then what I was using. I think it depends on inspector talking to an electrician friend of mine. Thanks for new episode! Very nice done - looks fantastic. However, let me share my concerns: between inverter and panels you have 2 overcurrent/short circuit protection devices, CB + Fuse, even thought the panels are not able to generate that current, even by short circuit, which would be able to trip them, and these devices are mainly needed as disconnectors. But, you haven't installed SPDs... which could save your electronic in case of a lightning strike in the neighborhood. Have thought about installing an SPD on the PV side?

Good video man, just wonderin though why do you need the pos and neg fused? in fact why fuse at all? even if the panels are shorted, they will only supply a limited amount of current, they can't blow a 15A fuse! it's not like there is a low impedance supply that can deliver some serious current like a normal domestic supply, so if the wires can handle the SC current what is the point? just fit a DC isolator and don't waste your money, BOOM

So I have a question, you run all your panels in series I assume and then bring them in to the combiner box where you can then put them in parallel strings? Why not use an outdoor combiner box and then bring in one set of wires, just curious as to your methodology. Also what type of wire did you run from your panels to the combiner box? Thanks in advance, it looks great.

Yeah they are run in a 6s2p, 24 panels total at the moment. A combiner near the panels would be optimal but panels are on roof and I didnt want a box up there. I just wanted easy access to be honest. By code I still need a disconnect outside tho. I could move combiner there once installed but we see. Wires are 12awg THHN stranded from panels and 6awg after circuit breakers to inverter!

Winter time is a completely different animal at least here at my house due to trees and my poor solar panel angle. Ill for sure need to add more solar lol. @AveRage_Joe
@AveRage_Joe Жыл бұрын
In all honesty, it probly doesnt matter..... Ive had them in wrong direction for a while. It does show direction on the holder. It may be because when you pull the fuse open, that end disrupts or breaks the current circuit the fastest and moves it away to "break" a potential ark if under load.

@00000005547
@00000005547 Жыл бұрын
Out of curiosity, how many watts of panels do you have? B/C if even in those conditions you're still generating something like 400w, if you have the space it might be worth more to invest in more panels than in a huge battery bank. Just thinking out loud but around here, even on ebay every once in a while you see used panels in pretty big lots going for something like 30c/watt. And not very old panels either, I know in a lot of farms they're switching to even higher voltage strings since the inverters are even more efficient, but for home use they're excellent. Like I know it sounds ridiculous but a couple months ago there was someone selling 120kw worth of panels for $20k on ebay. They were in actually very good condition like 5 years old. Now installing 120kw worth of panels is a job and a half with significant installation costs and of course takes up a shit-ton of space lol. But I guess the idea is if you have something like 2+ acres and don't mind dedicating a corner of your land to it, I feel like it might be the better option? Because I imagine that even in such bad conditions, 100kw of solar is more than likely going to produce a significant amount of power. Hell probably even at night you could make a couple hundred watts just from moonlight lol. I just feel like being able to store enough energy for 6 days+ in those conditions will be significantly more costly than my suggestion. For example if you could use M3 battery packs (at 400vdc, hence why they're so cheap compared to S packs), with a high voltage inverter, For $15k you could get 150kwh of batteries if you shop around. This gives you like 25kwh per day, or basically 1kw average draw 24/7. Idk about you people but lfrom studies done the average U.S household uses 12kwh per person per day. So chances are you won't be able to live comfortably even with 15k worth of batteries in the winter. Unless of course you use other fuels, like wood for heating and gas dryer. But then that kind of negates the whole point of going off-grid. And of course thats not even taking into consideration that lithium batteries last significantly less than solar panels. Like even if those panels are running at 30% efficiency 100 years from now,you'll still be making a ridiculous amount of power during sunny times.
