Installing NEW Mercury Motor on My Jon Boat ( Unboxing to Running )

I'm showing how to install a new Mercury 4 stroke 25hp motor on my 15 foot fishing jon boat known as the Crispy Collector. I've never installed a motor before and this became more difficult that I originally thought it was going to be but it can be done with a few key tools in the home garage.

Looks like you have a long shaft motor on a short transom. Take it to a welding shop and get the transom raised. And get yourself a break away mount

Great motor Justin and looks awesome. I do have one suggestion though as you need to maybe put a piece of1x1 in the gap between the motor and transom that it sits down on something solid as over time or if you hit something you don't break the motor mount. I also agree with another suggestion I seen of adding a piece of plywood on the transom as well to give you a little stronger transom as that would be some that you could attach the 1x1 to that it also has something solid to attach to as well giving you a more solid transom as well. As I don't know if you know how much wear has already been put on the transom with bumps and bangs it's took from the old motor and stuff it may have hit. Maybe even make the 1x1 a little long that it extends pass the motor mount that a screw could be screwed in at the top into the transom to hold the 1x1 better as well. And as you know silicon is your best friend when you own any boat. Just speaking from what I seen in my Marine Patrol days as not a boat builder but have seen some boats like that where the motors that size tore out the transom because they were not strengthen a little more. I've trained people on how to operate those types of lift trucks (and other types.) Rob doesn't fully know how to use it and is therefore dangerous on it.

I have that same motor! Minus the power trim/tilt. Its been runnin’ strong every weekend since 2015. Definitely a dependable workhorse and easy to maintain.

Coming from experience you need to transfer the weight of the battery and the gas tank in the front. with the weight of you, the new engine, battery and two 6 gallon tanks your back end will sit significantly lower in the water line then you would want. Also this will great reduce the stress on the engine and transom by getting it on plain faster. Much love brother!

Bought a new Lowe 1860 Roughneck Center Console with a 60hp Mercury 4 stroke recently and love it. The Merc 4 stroke runs great, is quiet and definitely sips on the gas. Enjoy it. I put the first 20 hours on it quick and am preparing for first oil change.

And, if you're dumb enough to run it until one of the impeller blades comes off... well, I just might be feeling cranky enough (because I've been telling all my customers not to do this) to charge some BIG bucks to go up into the thermostat housing to find the pieces. Listen to ALL the manufacturers; DON'T DO IT!

Gerald Paul it creates too much drag in the water. It makes the efficiency far less and it goes much slower while biting more fuel. Also can make the wake splash into the boat when you decelerate

Measure the distance from top of transom to mount. Find square aluminum tubing and slide between hook over on mount and transom. Just additional support.

My dad used to fish billfish tournaments in South Florida and his team was offered a sponsorship with mercury and they gave them a chance and after 6 months of problems and repairs they said "you can have your mercuries back" and they bought all new Yamahas. Our boat right (Sailfish 2660) now has had the same Twin Yamahas 150s on them for over 10 years and they haven't had ANY problems. (With normal maintenance).

You might want to consider putting an engine hoist in that garage. You pop the cover and hook into it right on top of the motor. Easy-peasy.

Hey Justin, put a lock washer on that bolt, it'll take care of the problem of the nut ever coming off. You might want to think about getting some pro help on trapping that Bobcat. They can be dangerous, especially with a small child nearby.

They make solar powered trickle chargers. Also...youre going to want a cranking battery to start the motor. The battery for your electric trolling motor is most likely a deep cycle battery. Its designed differently from a cranking battery. Youll drain the battery fast. But with a solar powered trickle charge battery charger you would avoid the battery going dead

Four stroke motors only use fuel. Not mixed. The oil you put in is the crankcase oil for the bottom end of the motor. The motor runs straight gasoline like a car.

Good job...have you been able to fix the hight? I don't know if i can judge this but i looks as the shaft should been a short one. Even if it's correct or not it's very important when others buy there motor that the shaft is correct length. Not easy to go back wih the engine afterward. I don't think the seller will take it back

I’d always recommend a 3 battery set up but if you don’t wanna do it buy a high cca motorcycle or jetski battery (powersport) and just Keep it handy if you kill your battery and need something start motor in emergency

i would double the nuts ,so that they can't loosen off and flat wheel the bolt down a bit to keep it clear of the fuel tanks guessing.

if possible mark the holes and drill them with the motor off to save the powder coating on your shiny new expensive motor. I got a new suzuki 20 hp, fuel injection, garden hose wash ports, totally worth it.

Definitely need to bolt down the motor. I have the exact same motor and pulled it for a week and there is a ton of room now and it bent the transom.

Since it is a 25hp Mercury that means it is actually made in Japan made by Tohatsu and they are known for being pretty reliable. Curious to see how you like it :)

You got a long leg motor for a boat with 15” transom. What you needed was a short leg. That long leg is designed to be on a 17”-22” transom

Justin the new motor sure is purdy lookin Yeah ! Buddy ! I got some no good news I had a CT scan w/IV contrast on my neck on May 14 TH . The report says possibly lymphoma or leukemia . Going to see the VA ENT doc on June 10TH . Report says biopsy recommended . I have lump on the lefts side of my neck under my cheek . Please keep your fingers crossed for me . After your bain surgery did you have to go for chemo & radiation treatments ? Thank You Justin . Hope you get that darn Bobcat . Justin I can't believe the new motor didn't come with a propeller . Oil reservoir? Definitely learn the difference between the 2 cycle and 4 cycle engines. Have the 25hp 4 stroke myself. We love it on our 1860 grizzly.

I'll take your 25 you pulled off, as my 25 i have is giving my a bunch of issue's and keeping me off the water because all I have is my trolling motor and with just that and the wind would blow me away and have me stranded again.

Put the other bolts in. add a piece of 3/4 inch ply to the entire transom of the boat so that it sturdies it up a bit. last thing you want is that motor taking your transom and visiting davey jones
