Thanks for the vid. (BTW, every place you say "gutter"......you mean "downspout". (The gutter is the horizontal part running along the edge of your roof.) Cheers!

If you install the diverter lower, level with just below the top of the waterline of the barrel, you can still have a screened vent on top. It won't overflow that way, I think I'm gonna go that route. I don't know if it's better to have it vented or sealed. It might matter if it gets too hot. I dunno. I just got 3 blue barrels today and I'm planning out my system now. Thanks

flipping it upside down does work if your gutter is too big. Thanks for the tip.

on your original rain barrel, there is an outlet near the top that is meant to run back into your downspout. This is to prevent overflow. you dont need that diverter by Oatey. I am not sure if the instruction didnt mention it, but that is the purpose of the high spout. Just FYI of course.

I have watched, it seems like millions, of the rain barrel making and diverter videos. You, Doc at Home take the cake in all areas. After watching you I didn't care about the whole making a barrel catch my rain stupid stuff. I had a great laugh and put this problem to rest. If it does rain on my garden, well that's great, if it doesn't I guess I will have raisins instead of grapes.

To fill holes, repair metal parts, or even fabricate metal parts ( think broken bib valve knob), I use a product out of Allentown pa called PC-7 (PC-11 for marine, fuel tank repair). It was developed to glue hwy reflectors on roadways. If you don't know about PC-7, you aren't able to fix anything. Comes as a 2 part epoxy in film canister size to gallon pails, mebbe bigger. I've glued rocks to bridge abutments to make urban guerilla climbing walls, repaired teeth on a huge brass Tiller gear on a 1935 36' wooden sailboat, restored a rusted rollbar (1/2" x 3" coating and clamped beer can sleeve as a form. It's the bomb. Great for affixing towel racks to bath tile without drilling. 24 hours and the putty becomes a metal epoxy. I live by this stuff. PC 7 (grey) PC-11 white

I'm getting my rain barrel tomorrow. I hope it's easy as you make it look. Why didn't you do a follow-up video?

Just need to put in a drain hose for when rain barrel gets full. No different than the 1" hole a bathroom sink/tub has to prevent overflow.

Anyone know what brand of diverter this first one is?! I cannot find it anywhere!!
@evabartlema23254 жыл бұрын
I have recently purchased a rain barrel and diverter. I have a question about the installation though. All of the tutorials I have found online install the diverter on the same height as the rainbarrel's entrance hole (= water level). I understand that you should not install it beneath the water level of the barrel., as that will prevent it from filling up properly. In my case I would like to install the diverter about 70 cm higher up on the pipe than the entrance of the barrel. Logic tells me it might still work, but I haven't tried and haven't found any examples of it being done that way. I would love to hear your input!

So the air comes out where the water comes in hope it worked if not put a air vent in just put it higher than the overflow inside drain pipe

Why do you mount the Oatley diverter above the barrel and run the water tube to the top of the barrel. Would it not bypass water better when the barrel is full if you mounted it like you did the Fiscars diverter with a horizontal connection on the side of the barrel near the top?
@docathome8298 жыл бұрын
+Fred Oswald I think you're right, but the Oatey has that huge downward angle built in, and the entrance on the barrel I'm using with the Oatey is on top. The effect is that the additional "head" above the bucket increases the pressure on the bucket, so the lid must be on really tightly and with a good gasket.
@FredOzzie8 жыл бұрын
+Doc at Home I bought an Oatley diverter to replace a rubber Earth Minded diverter that blocks too much of the downspout, making the barrel overflow. I mounted the Oatley at about the height of the barrel inlet. But the Oatley actually diverts water from an inch or so above the spout. So I'll have to raise my barrel (when it is empty) bu putting 2x4's under the barrel. I also have two Fiscars diverters that each feed two barrels: one Fiscars barrel and three red Greek olive barrels like you show. These systems work very well.
@davenicks5797 жыл бұрын
So, is the Fiskars or Oatey system better, in your opinion?

What is the name of the black diverter, I do not see anything else than oatey in amazon
so how do you filter particles coming off your roof?

you used the diverter wrong as they are designed to be connecting the older pipe loosely so you can take it off easily and give it a clean. However you screwed it tightly.......
