Your tutorial has helped me successfully perform the same upgrade to my 2008 iMac. The small cautions you gave for some of the ways to avoid machine-specific damage were great and it really felt like a lesson more than a "how-to" video--skills. Thanks! Question: what's your insight, if any, into upgrading from the C2D 2.4GHz (E8135) to the C2D 3.06GHz (E8435)? Any help is much appreciated.
@rkneegordon6316

Allan it's doable, BUT the gain is very minimal. Unless you plan to use this machine for video/sound editing, heavily, by all means the more power will help, still not by much. The best way you see any improvement to this IMac is the fusion drive process, maxing out the the RAM, from OWC, and upgrading the GPU from 256MB to a 512MB. GPU upgrade will allow to to carry a 2nd monitor at a higher resolution without and lag, or stressing out the original GPU card.

That would be funny to do a mod on it where you put like a little latch stand on the bottom of the LCD to stand it up right kinda like a car hood :'D

on the 2009 model you have attached a external drive, duh! that is why it is taking long. The external must come out of his standby/idle time and spin the disk up. Then the iMac is going to read what is on the external drive. If that is done reading then the iMac is starting all the system files on his own HD.

Super tutorial. My 2008 iMac has been collecting dust for several years. Now i will be able to bring back to life. Two questions. Which process did you use to get the OS on the new SSD? Since the heat sensor does not work on the SSD do you simply let the fan run high all the time? Please and thanks

Thanks for the vid. So was there anything you needed to do about the thermal sensor causing the fans to go full out? Did you need to adjust any settings to prevent this?
@irehabfix
@irehabfix 6 жыл бұрын
Michael Bretherton you can install iStat menus to use their thermal control or SMC fan control or Several other programs to override that issue. Mac fans run abnormally slow because they wanted models such as this to run silently in the store. Sounds silly but Apple is a marketing company. So any Mac user should increase fan speed actually.

You are the only one that puts a Sharpie on the cables. That was something I thought. Two connectors side by side. When you go to reassemble how do you know without a mark?
@irehabfix

Devin Nerison if you don’t mark them you need to use a voltage meter but the problem is they are reversed on each side. It’s really confusing. I honestly don’t remember how i painfully learned to use a sharpie.

I changed out the hard drive on an old imac, what a pain in the ass. Now the backlight is going out and a replacement LCD costs more than the whole unit is worth. I don't think you really needed to remove the entire screen, you could have just propped it up or had a second person hold it while you replaced the hard drive.
@irehabfix
@irehabfix 9 жыл бұрын
XeonProductions did you have the backlight problem right after the repair ?
@XeonProductions
@XeonProductions 9 жыл бұрын
irehab fix Actually the backlight was starting to go out before I replaced the failing hard drive. Moral of the story is, if you find a deal on craigslist that's too good to be true... it's too good to be true.
@irehabfix
@irehabfix 9 жыл бұрын
Well, there is a problem with this model, maybe you could lookup some youtube videos also. The soldering of the wires ( usually white ) that lead to the backlight on the LCD is bad often. Ive seen that a few times where the solder connections were so bad that half the backlight was out, then you touch the wires a little and it flickers on and off. I was about to change a backlight in an LCD when simply touching the wire made it spring back to life, and it ended up being a soldering job instead. Might be worth playing with the wires or replacing them entirely to hope the backlight can be saved. Yes Craigslist. I remember I would drive around and buy iPhones before the iCloud lock days, and I wore a bullet proof vest. So I hear you.

Thanks for the Video!!! Question to ask of you, given you have done this and I have not even opened mine. The thought occurred to leave the existing disk where it is and try cross over the wiring and put the SSD in the optical bay? Is there enough room to run 2 flat cables? One Sata extension cable, one Sata to Pata cable? The 1 TB I have in there is doing great, such a shame to have to retire it.... Thoughts?
@TimHorton69
@TimHorton69 8 жыл бұрын
+Brian Pluymen OWC (macsales.com) sells a HHD/SSD chassis that is made for the optical bay .... It's called the DATA DOUBLER, and is less than $20 I think .... OWC also has a much more solid 2.5 to 3.5 adapter - made from aircraft grade aluminum and with it's own daughter board.

+iBroke Canada - Thanks, the first you mention is what I used and its running well. Though as much as the speed of overall performance has increased, i get spinning beach balls for about 30 seconds at a time at regular intervals. I will assume its the system memory that is the issue, its only 4 Gb. I could go to 6. The system is really only used for Internet, so it should be able to cope. Will try fresh intsall, then see where it takes me. Thanks for the support!
@TimHorton69
@TimHorton69 8 жыл бұрын
+Brian Pluymen I also have 4gb of RAM and mine runs quite well. You may want to install a memory manager and monitor your memory usage. Usually with a mac memory management is due to too many apps running in the background Startrain start up removing or disabling apps that are being used on make a dramatic difference in how your mac manages the memory.
@whisperquietB
@whisperquietB 8 жыл бұрын
+iBroke Canada -Did you make the step to Mavericks & El Capitan? I have avoided jot to date, but maybe that will help with the spinning beach ball. The memory manager you suggested - do you have a specific one you'd recommend?
@irehabfix
@irehabfix 8 жыл бұрын
+Brian Pluymen Have you replaced the thermal paste on the I/O memory controller, CPU, and GPU SMD's ? Have you monitored the temperature ? using iStat Menu you can control the fan , in the drop down menu it has a built in fan controller eliminating the install of another third party program like SMC fan control , HDD fan control, and the like. The problem might be from extreme overheating. Right now with my SSD on this 2011 iMac with 16GB of memory, if the fans are too low I sometime get a major slow down. I have replaced all paste with Antec formula 6 ( formula 7 is excessive, mostly for overclocked PC gaming computers ) Another idea would be to install a turbo boost controller, so that you never have turbo boost turned off on your computer. A few more ideas, installing Onyx for your OS, do all temporary file and cache cleaning , and using onyx you can turn off something called " App Nap " , google that one, no need for me to explain any of these , you can do independent research, these are just ideas. You could try to do a permissions repair and directory rebuild using disk warrior booting from an external hard drive, not running from your main hard drive while doing any sort of repair. Reset the SMC or PRAM , again google, Also go into your system preferences and turn off 3D graphic switching and also in the energy preferences be sure your hard disks are only set to go to sleep every three hours. last idea i have is to console running , clear out all your error logs with the Onyx program , and start fresh, and watch what happens in the console, it will tell you what is going on and if any errors are going on you may not visually be seeing .

Good video. Was wondering if your iMac fan was running like crazy?
@irehabfix
@irehabfix 10 жыл бұрын
Yes. You need to install SSD Fan Control , or a similar program. I just put the thermal sensor there for a place to put it , so it doesn't read anywhere else. But you will need a manual fan control program. You really need one anyway. Apple chooses form over function. The fans in the iMac need to run faster , but they choose a low RPM so it doesn't make any noise...

No problem. You can remove the thermal sensor wire and it will have the same result really... but I like to leave everything in the computer. Someday someone might need it... have to buy one on eBay for 10$ ... its just a good habit not to remove parts. Someone might want to switch it back, or you might need to swap drives in a pinch and then you will have the wire... just a thought.

HI. If I replace the optical drive with the SSD, will the PATA interface allow for higher-than-5400HDD speeds? I mean, is there any benefit of putting an SSD-PATA and leaving the original HDD-SATA2 in place?
@irehabfix
@irehabfix 8 жыл бұрын
+bla2030 i have had nothing but trouble trying to use the optical bay replacement as the OS Drive, in fact, When The machine is running the drive appears as I boot my machine, but if the disc is ejected It cannot be found to be mounted again. I think there might be some sort of plug and play type driver missing from the system as its not intended to be used for anyting but an optical drive. And Apple optical drives have alywas been funny. For example if you replace the superdrive with an aftermarket drive in all Apple laptops you can no longer boot from a disc. Not that many people do that anymore , but it shows just how much the optical drive itself contains drivers that the system interacts with. I have been able to use a drive above 5,400 RPM and it said it was working but it really just seemed to stay at 5,400 RPM.
@irehabfix
@irehabfix 8 жыл бұрын
+irehab fix I keep it simple, all I do is pull the optical drive and replace it with a storage drive, and i no longer use a dock or cradle like an icydock, i just attach it directly and stick the drive in with double sided tape.

are you holding option on startup to select USB, if not, the flash has not been made bootable?
@irehabfix
@irehabfix 6 жыл бұрын
Did you get it to work? When you boot from USB you need to run the disk util, format the drive and then you can boot from that USB to format. When you boot from a USB it really should give you the option to format and install like in windows, but it does not. The drive needs to be recognized first. This is in keeping with the tradition of Apple doing in house repair and the reason for this.

Why in god's name wouldn't Apple just make the back come off? Wouldn't it also make their own repairs easier and cheaper? I was going to throw in an SSD until I saw what you have to do with the screen. Screw it, it's ain't that bad! Maybe if the drive completely dies one day...

Andrew Eckwielen No. Actually this video is a bit older and I'm working a newer one. I no longer recommend that , instead , a direct connection using a standard metal drive bay adapter. 3.5 to 2.5 adapter . on newegg www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811990004&cm_re=3.5_to_2.5_drive_adapter-_-11-990-004-_-Product that adapter fits in the iMac, needs to be installed upside down so the hole is showing or closing it can damage the LCD

@irehabfix
@irehabfix 9 жыл бұрын
Technically you can hook it up and just throw it in there. I wouldn't recommend it , but thats all that needs to be done. At the time of this video this was a newer thing, and now using an icy dock is a good example of unnecessary components because the connection is not direct. The board inside the icy dock is an intermediary thats simply unnecessary

+irehab fix can you use any SSD? or are there recommended drives which will work best with iMacs?
@irehabfix
@irehabfix 8 жыл бұрын
Yes you can use any SSD , I installed this one in this video here about 5 years ago and still haven't had them call me back with a single issue. personally I think the best for the money is the 850 EVO 3D from Samsung. It has a good read and write speed not just a good read speed. Its about equal for read and write. You can use any SSD and you dont need the icy case, In my own mac i have heavy duty 30 pound double sided tape holding my SSD in place against the alloy in the back of the case. Just stuck it right on and hooked up the SATA cables and its perfect, it also gives it better air flow. The center middle HDD fan blows up and out over the back , and it stays cooler. I use a 128GB Samsung 850 EVO PRO, i think the pro is the way to go, its not much more

Then the iMac is going to read what is on the external drive. If that is done reading then the iMac is starting all the system files on his own HD.
