With fall arriving we decided it was time to install the wood stove and chimney pipe at the off grid property. Installation was relatively easy, although we did hit a few snags along the way!

Wood stove is from DROLET (WWW.DROLET.CA)
Stove and chimney pipe is from DURAVENT (WWW.DURAVENT.COM)
Welcome to our little adventure! We have decided to purchase and develop an off grid property for recreational use. We have absolutely no experience, but we do have a healthy amount of drive to complete this project over the next few years!

I'll be installing my wood stove in my pole barn this weekend...first time and no helper so your video was a great help. Thank you so much. That part about cutting the hole in the wall...I have that same feeling but I prefer that ...to cutting a hole in the roof. Clear and to the point Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much, my thought was that it was easier to go through the wall to prevent leaks….but you are right, stoves draft better when you go up through the ceiling!

I never had a stove or a fireplace but installed a stove in my house 2 years ago and love it ,took a while to learn the heat and wood and dampener but I have it down pat now and love it , I put a small fan in my family room door to kinda blow the heat down the hall way and works great

Drolet says exterior chimneys are acceptable but interior and through the highest point of the roof is best. The guy at Morton (Metal) Buildings recommends exterior, as you have done. Now that you have had this for a year, what are your thoughts? You probably will be cleaning it soon. I'm interested in that as well.

I didn’t go up through the roof because I was worried about water leaking in since we are away from the cabin for weeks sometimes. That being said we have had no issues with the installation and the chimney works very well. I cleaned it a few weeks back and only found a small amount of creosote. We are very happy with the installation😁😁

Bought the same dura vent to add an extension to bring it up to code. We can’t seem to get it on. It’s supposed to screw on another piece but just won’t go on all the way. Just one side wants to go in not sure why

We should have one more section to be within the code for Canada, but the chimney drafts beautifully so I think I’m just going to leave it as is.

Think it needs to be 2 feet above the peak for proper draft, plus I seen a huge gap around the pipe entering through the thimble, how are you going to fix that? Looks like a wooded area that should have a spark arrestor cap on top?
@truenorthoffgrid367
@truenorthoffgrid367 11 ай бұрын
It’s close to 2 feet above the roof line, but it works fine so I probably won’t change it now. There is no gap at the thimble, there was a small space but I filled it with high temp silicon. There is a spark arrester inside the pipe as well

I did mine exactly same way, but I installed it on a aluminum ladder for additional support all the way up.... (stormy Westcoast). I didnt trust the individual joints of the sections. Your pipe looks kinda short to me, hope you get enough draft?

Top of the chimney is supposed to be 3 feet higher then the top of the roof for clearance, mine is not…lol It does draw beautifully though! I have no issue with it so far. Works great!

I remember that it was not easy to fit the adapter flange that fits to the end of the horizontal chimney pipe. The fit was very tight and I had to put a piece of wood over the part then hit it with a hammer….. probably not the best way but it was all I could figure out and it worked. Hope this helps

Looks good. Can I ask what model of Drolet stove that is, and how many square feet your cabin is? I'm trying to decide between the different "Escape" models myself.
@truenorthoffgrid367
@truenorthoffgrid367 8 ай бұрын
Our stove is the Escape 1200, it’s way too powerful for our little cabin ( about 360 sq foot) but if I run the damper way down and open a few windows it fine. Great stove at a great price!

I am going to do the same thing with a camp here in Maine. After talking to a wood stove place where they wanted to charge me over $3000 to install the pipe and they would not go through the metal roof. What does that tell you!

@truenorthoffgrid367
@truenorthoffgrid367 9 ай бұрын
No, the chimney survived the spring thaw and didn’t move at all with the snow sliding off the roof. It has worked great since the installation and only had a bit of creosote to be cleaned before we started using it a few weeks ago. Happy I decided to do it myself!

Hi! That's very helpful. I try to do my research before installing my wood stove. Is it a good idea to get the pipe through the wall? I heard that there is no problem if the height of the pipe is at least 4 meters but in any case the vertical part longer than the horizontal. Does it have for the top of the pipe to be higher than the roof ridge? Also, I saw that your pipe is close to the trees. Do you have something to prevent sparks from getting to the canopy? Thanks alot! You give me inspiration for my endeavors!
@truenorthoffgrid367
@truenorthoffgrid367 Жыл бұрын
Hey Elias, I think it’s always better to go strait up through the roof, but I didn’t want to risk having leaks when I’m not at the cabin since it’s only a weekend getaway at his point. My installation works great, the chimney drafts well and I have not had any issue with it so far. There is a spark arrester built into the top part of the chimney pipe and mine sits a bit higher then the ridge line of the roof. I should probably go a bit higher and will likely add another piece in the spring. Appreciate your kind words, thanks for watching!

I really like how you guys in the United States don't have this absolutely ridiculous regulation that you cannot have 90 degree bends on flue pipes. It's an absolute lot of nonsense because I've built plenty of stoves with 90 degree bends on them and they still draw perfectly fine
