Yes, thought I was smart putting small gates inside and hooks coming into each other so they do not snag. After watching him install both ways I am going to do it his way. His way is better because one hook curves away from the board otherwise they both crowd each other. See how easy they come apart when you fight one hook as opposed to 2 hooks. In this case the common sense approach defies the obvious install technique.

If you had set up the lap joints of your sides and gate so the gate was on the inside, you could have the brackets installed in their intended position without having the problem you experienced. It's a little too late now, of course. Thanks for sharing, now I know to set the gate ends to the inside so I won't have brackets hanging out and snagging things.

So the sides would extend all the way to be flush with the gate's lateral boards? "inside" as you say right? So once you unhook each side... the sides could effectively be pulled away from the edge of the gate a bit and it should come right out... right? Sounds like a better build than what he's got. I'm looking to also build some removable sides and gate for my car hauler with steak pockets and if what I'm visualizing of what you're saying to do is right... I'll go THAT route. Also, any ideas on making them easily REMOVABLE from the steak pockets? I was thinking to extend the board THROUGH the steak pocket about 3". Then, cut those ends off, drill some holes, add some washers and bolt the cut off end back onto the end tight, but SPIN-ABLE. So once I put the sides on, I just turn each bottom and they can't come out, but I can quickly and easily spin them flush and take the sides off.... whacha think? Any better ideas?

I'd like to thank you. Because I was facing this exact issue (about to build the sides for my utility trailer with latches like this and had seen this video in the past and wanted to re-watch it to avoid his issue via putting enough space, but your answer is correct. sides you want to lift the 'insides' of the box, so you avoid this problem. Thank you.

After all those years of owning the socket/ratchet set you'd think you would be better at using it!

Incorrect position of the side cleat. The 'hook' should not be jutting out into space. They should hook over one another and BOTH hooks should turn the corner. I am uncertain as to where you went wrong, but perhaps it was because of the incorrect stamping.

Did you WATCH his video? He explains WHY he does this, and I'm not saying it's "right", it's just what he did and explains why. In short he said that having them on "correctly" (both corners IN) it made the gate difficult to remove. Setting it up the way HE DID in the video with his current build, with the ONE of the hooks OUT, as you say, makes it MUCH easier to remove the gate, regardless of correctness or build. Attention to detail.

What's a "T nut"? Couldn't see it.

I think what he's calling a "T nut" is a threaded fastener that's recessed into the bolt hole on the inner surface of the board that has the corner bracket on the outside. It doesn't protrude into the inner portion of the board like a nut, or nut and washer, would. It has three little "ears" (for lack of a better word) that pull into the board, and keep the T nut from rotating.
