installing valve seal 4.6 t ford engine...easy fix.

I also had my 4.6 engine smoking. My case was kinda weird. It would only smoke after it was warm. If you went driving, and idle for some seconds or minutes, then it would smoke when taking off. Please note: I strongly advice having someone assisting you, this make the process easier. My wife assisted me. Second, I am NOT a mechanic, neither is my wife, I am a teacher, my wife a domestic engineer. We have no experience in doing engine work, but we were willing to take up the challenge. My engine has 227k miles. Every single mechanic told us, you need to rebuilt the engine. But my engine idled perfectly, no missing, no weird sounds, so before spending on a new engine, i trusted my gut feeling that the seals were bad. So without removing the engine or heads, I did the following: (Please be very patient with the process. It is time consuming, especially if you have no experience like me. I suggest beginning with piston number 1 if you have no experience, as this will help you when you reach piston #4 which is a littler more challenging, but not impossible) 1. First thing, changed PCV valve to verify this is not the issue. Still smoked. 2. I removed the O2 sensors from each side of the muffler by the engine. I notice that smoke was only coming from passenger side. This showed that something was wrong in that side. I therefore decided only to replace the valve seals from that side. 3. I began by removing the plastic cover for the radiator. This allows you to stand in front of the engine. You will have to remove the top hose of the radiator, to have more space. Well at least, i did. 4. I use the method where you spin the engine so that the piston goes up to prevent the valve from dropping in piston. I used two straws join together, removed the spark plug, and place it in there. This show when the piston goes up. 5. When removing the valve cover, please make sure you cover all the holes that the engine uses for oil. Covering the holes is very important, DO NOT avoid this step. I even cover where the timing chain is located. If you don't do this, you might accidentally drop something into the engine or piston area. 6. I left the camshaft retainer plates in place. You do not need to remove them. Once the piston is up, use the valve spring removal tool, and remove the rocker arms. There is a certain position where the camshaft needs to be for easy removal of the rocker arm. You might have to spin the engine backwards slightly or forward. Once you remove it, return the piston to TDC. Once the rocker arm is removed, squeeze the valve spring and use a magnetic tool to remove the valve keepers. Once keepers are removed, release valve tool, and pull out spring. Use a long nose vice grip to remove seal. Be careful as not to scratch the valve stem. Before removing the seal, to test if your piston is at the top, i would push my valve careful down and see if it touches the piston, and once it did, i felt safe to removed the seal. In some cases i did not feel the piston, i knew i had not left the piston at TDC. So my wife (my assistant) would hold the valve and i would move piston to TDC. 7. I did one valve at time. I used grease to hold the keepers in place. I used a screwdriver that had magnetic properties on the tip. Then i moved to the other valve. Once i finish both valves, then i would move to the other piston. 8. I notice that on my engine, piston 1 had bad valve seals. When i removed them, they had oil inside. You could see residue of old oil inside. When i compare to other seals in other pistons, the other seals were dry from inside. The old seals had an opening of 7 mm. The new seals were 5.5 mm. Huge difference. 9. Please be advice that the most difficult one is the valve at the end, on piston #4. It is difficult to see even the keepers. I almost left it without changing it. But since i already had experience with 1 to 3 piston, i decided to finish it. However, i used my mobile phone, with camera on, and place it at angle to be able to see. This last one requires patience. TO work in that tighter area, i used a very long ratchet extender connected to the valve tool. So be patient, it can be done. The rocker arm is also difficult to install because of the tighter space. Once my keepers were in place, i removed the piston from TDC, and when i squeeze the spring, this allow the valve to go lower, and this gave me a break to insert the rocker arm. Once you are finished, put everything back together. Refill with coolant. After we finished, We prayed with my wife, and ask for blessings from above. i ask my wife to crank it. And told her, if you hear a strange noise to shutdown immediately. But no, the engine started immediately, and you could hear a much more solid engine. IT started up so nicely, and guess what, absolutely NO SMOKE. The blue smoke was gone. We took it for a spin for about 5 miles. NO Smoke. We have been using it now for about 2 weeks. and everything is great. No more smoke. I still have the other 8 seals for the next side when they go bad. But the driver side seams to have more space. Above all, I praise the Lord for the wisdom and blessing!

Nice video. I finished mine yesterday and have some comments/suggestions. I left the camshaft retainer plates in place (didn't want to chance cracking anything). I found that holding the tool in place and trying to put the keepers back on the valve stems was probably the most difficult (even with grease, etc). What I did was I took a 4 ft pipe and laid in along the top of the fender well and used 2 tie wraps to keep it in place (there were holes in the engine bay at the fender). I then used a 1 inch ratchet strap - one end on the pipe, the other end on the handle of the valve spring tool. As I pulled the tool, I looped the strap over the handle and tightened it enough so the valve spring remained compressed. I can then play with the keepers and get them in place correctly. Once in place, I slowly released the strap while holding the handle. Once you get used to it, the job moves along fairly quickly.
