Vinyl windows have become almost a commodity item. Used to sell windows to new construction contractors in MN. The same milgard brand early on even. You’ll typically see vinyl in spec houses up to 750k in my area. What he’s putting in would rate as one of the better designed and built brands of vinyl. Middle/high grade let’s say. Putting a clad wood window in a house is astonishingly expensive. You’d take a $7000 package to a $25000+one. Even the composite type will easily double the cost and bust your budget. I’d say he was spot on with his choice and I speculate he picked the very best window the project could afford.

The problem with wood frames in modern houses is they need painting every 3 or 4 of years. The combination of sun, rain, frost, condensation and the narrow glazing bars means that you WILL get water into the frame otherwise. You build, paint, finish,....and everything is still new for a while and 10 years goes by before you know it and half your windows have rot. I don't know if people were just better painters in the old days, of just that houses were so cold and draughty that you didn't get condensation. I've re-corded sash windows that are three hundred years old with no rot in them, I can't say what is different, but something has changed.
@nordlands87984 жыл бұрын
@Steve Sheldon Wood frame windows should be combined with better U-value glass or a de-humidifier, so as to not get any inside condensation.

Steve Sheldon I agree. I put 400 series Anderson’s on my house too. In winter when it gets really cold I get frost around the edges. So when it melts I’m running around with a towel trying to dry it.

I see a couple issues with this installation. Now it’s probably not a huge deal because you have big overhangs , however I feel best practices dictate that you ALWAYS back caulk your window flange on three sides (top and sides) and also space the bottom flange with a horseshoe shim as to allow drainage. Just something to consider, still love this channel !
@jum52384 жыл бұрын
That's how I've done my windows in the past. The distributor I bought my windows from came out to look at my install (as a homeowner) and said I did a better job than his installers. (I used bituthane as a sealant/wrap for the windows - sticky stuff!) One other point... I've heard that you DON'T want to nail the top because house settling will deform the window and break the seals on the glass panes. I bought a door custom made after researching the types of low-e glass to stop sun on a high exposure 2nd floor egress door. I was pretty bummed when the door came with the glass installed the wrong way. It allowed heat to come through, but not escape.
@TpetPlayr4 жыл бұрын
@@jum5238 I do the same. Tape, back caulk, and tape again. But i put 1 nail in the top, which you can see these guys doing. It just holds the top in tight, but will also give if the framing moves.

There is absolutely no reason to back-caulk the flanges when using house wrap, bituthane flashing, followed by taping over the nail-fins. Adding caulk to this system is a complete waste of time, money, and material. The way Scott's crew installed these windows is textbook.

If you want the milgard warranty with those windows they do need to be installed to milgard specs. Roofing nails do not meet their specs, also the nail not going through the nail hole does not meet milgard specs.I needed factory warranty work on a window that wasn't operating correctly called out the milgard service tech and he would do nothing because our windows were fastened wrong! we took out all the incorrect fasteners and put in correct fasteners per their paper. also that kingspan house wrap is a very good product they also make window tape and sill flashing tape. It is best to use their products in conjunction with their waterproofing house wrap.

In FL due to wind zones the manufacturer calls out nailing pattern, usually every other hole. And window screws are required instead of nails for many window manufacturers. City inspectors will not let you put your window tape on before they come and check that the window is fastened properly. Every state is a little different

I love the dbl sill detail! Makes great sense 👍 The first thing I do when I get a new set of drawings, is rip out the door and window schedule sheets and throw them in the trash. 95% of the time, the architect has NOT consulted with YOUR specific W/D manufacturer, so they take their best educated guess at what the rough opening (RO) should be, based on their past experience. Every manufacturer makes their product a little different from each other, often times requiring different rough openings. Yes, I am being a bit facetious about throwing those pages away, but only a little bit. A wood frame structure like this, is immensely more forgiving and repairable about this detail than a concrete structure. I won’t go into all the reasons why, but suffice it to say, from someone who has seen this detail botched more times than I care to remember. If your structure is concrete or block, you’ll do yourself a tremendous favor by choosing your W/D as early in the build process as possible.

I hit every opening (raw wood) with either redguard or masterseal hlm5000. I get the jamb all around then an equal width on the shear. It takes me maybe an hr or 2 for a whole house with a disposable paint roller & little material in paint on membrane equating to 15-30 dollars. Then my bituthene, window & bituthene again. Bottom then sides with 1st layer which is applied aprox 1/2 way into jamb depth with careful cuts & laps in bottom corners. Clean & tight & no wrinkles. Cheap insurance is caulking (THAT IS COMPATIBLE WITH BITUTHENE) on top & down side flanges to very bottom of side flange never caulk bottom flange. Fasten window plumb & sq & with mentioned even reveal with special consideration of trim aligning with other openings throughout the rm both inside & outside trim. Then bituthene sides then top outside not bottom. Lap top under house wrap or add an additional pc housewrap up to roof overhang. Bottom open allows any water to escape. Out at the coast with driving winds & rain I caulk ea edge of bituthene all around top & sides. Trim receives same - caulk all around both edges top & sides bottom left uncaulked for escape of any water that gets behind trim & it will eventually. Low expansion foam from inside all around & carefully filled. Ive had to use paint on membranes only where past employer fudged the window detail (shear was final siding - breckenridge) so I painted membrane in jamb & out to just shy of trim outline, caulked top & side flange, fastened window, painted directly onto flange after taping off window to remain visible, then ensured a sufficient lap of painted membrane onto 1st layer. Give it a day to dry then proceed as above with trim. Worked like a charm no leaks to this day. I think paint ons will soon completely replace wraps for there obvious benefits. Less build up, far less expensive, less likely to fail, & with a little planning are an easier, faster, superior method. I think paint ons will replace house wrap too. Paint the whole wall b4 you wall jack it. Inspector can still see your nail off.

Brother...nail those things in tight! (I prefer structural screws). Vinyl flexes with weather changes more than wood. How about just for the sake of holding the windows TIGHT to house to eliminate the window expanding and contracting away from interior and exterior trim...separating caulk joints and the like. Every other hole at the LEAST IMO. Good quality flange tape (butyl) eliminates the concern of "extra" nail holes being a cause for leaks. Also what about pressure as regards to storms? I see no reason NOT to nail (screw) the windows in better but to save a little time and money. Awesome series. Enjoy watching. Have learned some things even though I've been doing this type of work for over 20 years. Don't agree with 4-5 nails per side for sure though!

The installs are good except you have a ton of backlaps which would not pass a building envelope inspection. Regardless of eve position your tape should never backlaps or sit on top of the building wrap at the head of the window. In this case you're better suited after sealing the flange to the wood sheathing, to apply your building wrap over top of the membrane in a continuous strip at least 12 inches past the window. This is done by me for years and approved by many engineers. Good install.

Just a question. Why don’t the framers just simply cut the cripples at a 5 degree angle for that positive slope. The sill would then have slope and you wouldn’t have to mess around with hammering and breaking off shims

When you tilted that window sill with shims and a chisel at 5:40, that was visual poetry!
