Wild fan here, Dewar’s one of those guys where you get this uncanny sense good things are on the horizon when he steps on the ice on the PK. Sad to see him go, but the leafs faithful are gonna go nuts for this guy after about 5 seconds of him being on the ice.

is he really? +/- (i know can be shitty) stats show he hasn't quite made the jump to the NHL in terms of +/-. is that because of a bad team defensively ( I don't follow the wild that closely) or is it he has the potential to be good defensively? he does seem like a solid 4 line or depth forward.

That's 16 goals in 220 games from his teammates when Dewar had 10 himself. JFresh on Twitter has good scorecards and Dewar had a 22% for offense and a 89% on defense. Overall grade of 48%. Really shows that he's great defensively both 5v5 and on the PK but won't be the guy to push the offense.

This deadline is Treliving saying that he doesn't believe this team has what it takes this year to win. I don't blame him. Apart from the recent winning streak, this has been a very underwhelming season, so why go all in and trade away what little draft picks and prospects we have to most likely lose in the first round to Boston. Also, these deadline deals are hardly ever the difference maker in the playoffs and, especially if you look at the Leafs history with deadline deals, end up just hurting the team. I might not like that we didn't land a great right shot defenseman who can play with Reilly with term on his contract, but I'm guessing that not a lot of those guys were available. As a result, I'll settle for not trading away our first for a rental.

Making bigger trades right now will amount to nothing like all the other years. I think the Leaf's are focused on adding bigger or tougher players now and when the Tavares contract is done and the cap is up they can build around the core.

Exactly. The only problem is Leafs never got a true top 4 D man this year and never replaced Klinberg. They tried to replace but didn’t want to pay the asking price for a rental. Which hopefully works out. IMO dubas mortgaged the draft with next to nothing to show for it.

This is much more than an underwhelming deadline. Treliving needed to add a top RHD since the absolute moment he took over as GM. It was even more clear 3 months ago how bad this defence is and Lyubushkin and Edmondson should have been added then. The only thing Treliving has done is Grossly overpay on Nylander and add a couple mediocre physical defenceman.

I am just wondering and quite possibly doing alot of hoping...but putting that aside...now I am remembering when Toronto's Cliff Fletcher made a trade with the Calgary Flames which was and I am dating myself here, which was a block buster of a deal at the time which was 6 players from the Leafs going to the flames and 5 players from the flames coming back to Toronto. Now I am just focusing on 1 player in that deal in particular and that is Doug Gilmour. At the time of this deal Doug Gilmour had been traded from St. Louis to the flames earlier and was being used by the Flames as a 3rd line center and if I remember correctly he was either a 4th line or a 3rd line center for St. Louis. When the Leafs got him well we know what Doug Gilmour became...I am wondering like I said and probably more hoping that this player from the Wild blossoms. Here's hoping!

The question I ask is, what did people think the Leafs were going to do? We are a lot tougher, and as someone said here, when the rules change in a few weeks, the low-budget players we got will shine. We needed 'snot', and two big parts of that was signing Bert and Domi. I'm quite sure we won't get pushed around this play-offs.

The construction of this Leafs team isn't optimal, but blaming Treliving isn't fair. He's working within constraints, preserving our top prospects and first-round pick, as Leafs management believes this current team doesn't have the best shot at winning the cup. If it were Kyle Dubas, he might have traded away all our first-rounders by now, adopting a more aggressive approach. Which did nothing in the past.

Sure, the Leafs need better D (when have they not?), but in regards to this trade, I think the reason this trade was made is because of some of his peripheral numbers... For this season, Dewar has a shooting percentage of 17.5%, which is higher than Matthews' career average, he's a relatively physical player and his number of hits are above average for his total on-ice time, and he has only four...ONLY FOUR giveaways all season. Even with his numbers adjusted as a comparative, that's over five times fewer giveaways than Matthews as well. To me, that tells me he has good hands and there's some scoring potential there. I'm not saying he's going to become a top five offensive player, but he has some potential upside. However, the only issue is, as mentioned, where does he play and will he get enough ice time for some of his peripheral stats to shine and be beneficial for the team? I just hope Treliving and Keefe are aware of, and understand that his peripheral stats are completely dependant on enough ice time for him to be a contributor. If he doesn't get the ice time, some of his statistical positives won't come through. Overall, I think this is a relatively decent move, but ONLY if he gets enough playing time. The question is where? Regardless, I'll enjoy watching the Leafs outscore their crappy defensive mistakes and turnovers. That is, until the postseason comes and they get slaughtered due to their perpetual inadequacies...as always. The song remains the same.

Not upset they didn't get a specific player. I'm upset that Tampa, Boston, Florida all got better and we did not at all.

This trade begs the question: Does the injury to Knies require a longer recovery time? Maybe it's not trust but an imminent lines shuffle.
