I feel like the Oilers were never going to match the offers, but made the Ceci trade to show the Blues that they CAN match it. Then they asked the Blues for a bit more sweetener to let the players walk, which is why we see the "for future considerations" trade between the Blues and Oilers today.

Why wouldn't players accept signing offer sheets, CJ? We always hear how this league is underpaid compare to the other 3 professional leagues in N.A. At the end of the day, a player could be a big, awkward hit away from retiring. As far as I'm concerned, it shouldn't be a player's responsibility to worry about the cap for the team.

Maybe I can’t speak to it, since I’m not and never will be NHL calibre, but IF I ever did manage to make it to the NHL, I think I’d be willing to take a pay cut to go to a city that I love and would want to play for. Even lousy NHL players make way more than your typical American citizen. With even the slightest financial advice an NHL player is setup for a very comfortable life. Maybe if more players would think this way, they’d see their team start to flourish, as they’d have better players accepting smaller contracts (still making huge money)

@@mcthunderstick2374 you are right, of course. The problem is that loyalty is often not a 2 way street (not unlike how it is at most companies), especially for a young and coming NHLer. I expected the Oilers to match Broberg after the Ceci deal, I saw him with my tinted glasses as the natural replacement for Ekholm and next in line beside Bouch. In my opinion losing Holloway but getting Savoie is a wash, we'll see what happens. But i understand the money just didn't work with next year, having to pay Leon and McDavid here pretty soon. Offer sheets are a great tool, it is just GMs don't want to create "bad blood" with other teams. There are many teams with cap issues, offer sheets can make the situation even worse or force the team to give up on prospects. Either choice weakens the team and is a "win" for the team issuing the offer sheet.

I still firmly believe that Larsson is a better NHLer right now than Taylor Hall, I have no issue with that trade, Oilers fans basically bullied him out of town (the constant narrative around the deal 5-6ish years ago was beyond toxic) , made his life miserable and then cried when he signed somewhere else during the expansion draft. Doesn't even matter that much if the player actually moves. The important part is that the young player who probably hasn't been paid much gets what someone thinks he's worth. The Oilers were in a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation here, there would have been criticism if they matched, just like there is criticism right now for them not matching. All this basically means is that Doug Armstrong did a good job in preying on a team in a vulnerable position. The Oilers gamble to go hunting in Free Agency and grind the kids contracts down later blew up in their face, simply put. But the cap-space is just too valuable in this league, the Oilers would be toast if they paid that much money for these kids to underperform with the big contracts they need to fit under the cap in the next few years.

@@macleanclassics I think it's more a case of bad money management and being top-heavy for Edmonton. I think that players like that don't get those offers if they are not capable players and the blues obviously believe they are worth the amount of money they will be paid or will soon be. It is a calculated risk on both ends. As a blues fan, I was ecstatic about this. Until I heard about the subsequent trade this morning. I probably would have walked away if Edmonton wouldn't have just matched the offers as things stand or let them go. I think the fact that the blues had the sweeten the pot is a testament that the system leans a little more the Way You are advocating
