Yoko is a performance artist who is very unique to say the least. She was John's second wife and was married from 68 to 80. Though she has been misunderstood, she helped John become a better person after the Beatles broke up. John had some great songs. Sad to say we are coming up on 40 years since his passing. John’s wife, Yoko Ono, was an Avant Gard artist from Japan when he first met her. Avant Gard: “new and unusual or experimental ideas, especially in the arts, or the people introducing them”. Fans who loved John didn’t understand Yoko and why John would fall in love with someone so “different”. They couldn’t get past her “quirky” passion, but John LOVED it, and encouraged it. Remember the hotel bedrroom “Sleep-In” against the war in Vietnam in front of the global media surrounding their bed? Performance art for publicity against the war! BRILLIANT! Or doing an interview surrounded by global media under a bed sheet? BRILLIANT again! Many fans blame Yoko for the breakup of the Beatles, their beloved group. I believe because she was an easy target they did’t understand. I never cared for her Avant Garde artistry, but never held any disdain for her as a person. The most important thing is that John loved her. Something many fans will never understand or get over. John loved Yoko - Yoko loved John. That’s all that matters.

As with "Give Peace a Chance" and "Power to the People" - Lennon singles from 1969 and 1971 respectively - the chorus has an anthem-like quality, as he sings: "We all shine on, like the moon and the stars and the sun." Norman describes the chorus as Lennon restating his message of "peace campaigning and non-violent, optimistic togetherness". According to Lennon biographer John Blaney, the song is an appeal "for mankind to take responsibility for its fate" and represents "Lennon developing his own brand of egalitarianism".

LOVE this song!!! In answer to your question about Yoko's rather odd appearance...she was an artist (altho not quite as popular as most) who was a very quiet yet driving force behind John's decision to leave the Beatles and forge his own path. The blindfold she wore represented the blindness of justice and our refusal to see what was going on. Her crocheting was to symbolize that thru our own work we can "stitch together" a world where love ruled and equality was for all. It wasn't finished because the social changes weren't. John was heard, Yoko was seen. It was a true love affair and a great demo of how opposites really do attract. A lot of people still blame her for the break up of the Beatles. I saw it as a love story even tho my heart broke when my Dad told me the news of their end.

this is a brilliant song that only Lennon can do with his gruff vocals - i've heard so many covers of this song that sound like light poppy songs because of the chord structure but Lennon as he often does, takes it to another (Lennon) level that is sublime...

"Instant Karma!" (also titled "Instant Karma! (We All Shine On)") is a song by English rock musician John Lennon, released as a single on Apple Records in February 1970. The lyric focuses on a concept in which the causality of one's actions is immediate rather than borne out over a lifetime. The single was credited to "Lennon/Ono with the Plastic Ono Band", apart from in the US, where the credit was "John Ono Lennon". The song reached the top five in the British and American singles charts, competing with the Beatles' "Let It Be" in the US, where it became the first solo single by a member of the band to sell a million copies.

This is one of my favorite John songs. They only did ten takes and released it ten days after recording. It wasn't meant to be part of an album. John was still technically with the Beatles at this point. John just had a good song and wanted to put it out, which is what all good stand-alone singles should be. And if I'm not mistaken, George is also on this. :)

Yes! Sean Lennon has made a lot of great music (his album Friendly Fire is particularly great). I think sometimes he gets overlooked just because of who his father is. Lennon Claypool Delirium definitely has a 60's psychedelic influence, but I hear less Beatles and more early Pink Floyd and King Crimson (both of which they cover). Good stuff.

But I call your attention (whether for reaction or personal enjoyment) to John Lennon's album called "Rock and Roll', which was all covers of 1950's songs he loved (including Chuck Berry's "You Can't Catch Me", the lyrics of which the Beatles lifted for "Come Together".) I recommend his covers of Fats Domino's "Ain't that a Shame" and Bobby Freeman's "Do You Want to Dance". They'll make us all smile!

Side, side note: John met Yoko at an art exhibit and was intrigued by one item. You climb a ladder, and read a word, via a magnifying glass, written on the ceiling. The word was "Yes." The song employs a similar chord structure to that of "Three Blind Mice" and "Some Other Guy", and Lennon had used the same progression in the Beatles' 1967 single "All You Need Is Love". Later in 1970, he would adopt the melody of "Three Blind Mice", an English nursery rhyme, for his song "My Mummy's Dead". In their book The Words and Music of John Lennon, Ben Urish and Kenneth Bielen write that in the first verse of "Instant Karma!", Lennon employs sarcasm as he urges the listener to "Get yourself together / Pretty soon you're gonna be dead" and emphasizes "It's up to you - yeah, you!" Norman comments on the "hippie catchphrase of the moment" contained in this instruction to "Get yourself together", and he says that the warning of imminent death is "obviously not to be taken literally". Author Mark Hertsgaard cites the lines "Why in the world are we here / Surely not to live in pain and fear?" as a further example of Lennon "asking what purpose his life on earth was to serve", after his 1966 composition "Strawberry Fields Forever". According to Urish and Bielen, "Instant Karma!" conveys the need to recognize and act upon a shared responsibility for the wellbeing of humankind; the karmic rewards of this mindset are available to all, as implied in Lennon's exhortation to "Come and get your share". The same authors pair the song with Lennon and Ono's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" single from 1971, in terms of how the singer "both prods and challenges listeners before providing reassurance".
