The mix. scale should start on the 5th note of the major scale? that would be note E if playing over A7( key of A ) I'm seeing different things on you tube, can you put me straight on this - I want to add the mix. scale into my pentatonic blues....thanks, great job with sfs

Hello! Many teachers have the habit of relating everything to the major scale. This comes from classical theory, and it works ok most of the time. So in a song that is in A *major*, the 5th mode is indeed E mixolydian. But the chords in a song whose main chord is A7 (ex blues in A) are not derived from the major scale like most classical era music. In this case, Mixolydian IS the mode of the song. Actually, in a regular blues song, mixolydian is the mode of every chord. So you play A mixolydian over the A7, D mixolydian over the D7, and E mixolydian over the E7. The scale I show in this lesson is a Mixolydian Pentatonic which means it is not the complete mixolydian mode, but a 5 note subset that has this special sound. It still works as I explained above. Note for blues: Most blues players Use Mixolydian (or this 5 note subset) over the first chord only, because the first chord usually lasts 4 bars, which gives you time to mix things up. It's tougher to switch scales for each chord later (although very doable with some extra practice). Hope this helps :-)

@@Effectivemusicpractice Hi and a big thank you for getting back to me. This is why I got confused.....I put on a backing track on you tube called 'Slow blues in A major' 69bpm, but the chords used are A7-D7 and E7.....I could play A Minor Pent throughout and A Major pent over the one chord so I tried the E root Mix scale over the one chord...and it did not work, and I could not figure out why because everyone is saying play the mix scale over seventh chords. I now know that your A Mixolydian pentatonic is exactly what I was looking for to play over the four bars of the one chord A7 to vary the sound. Great explanation from you and much appreciated, thanks again.

or mixolidian pentatonic 7 dominant with progressions soloing in neighbour tones IV tone for mixolidian pentatonic ideais e V tones for lidian pentatonics ideas A7- I D- IV E- V A4/7 arpeggio plus 9 11 13 .and I II III V VI VII possible mix progressions

Hey Jeff, thanks for watching! You are correct that the shape can serve as a Lydian Pentatonic. If we considered the lowest note (G) as the root, then we would have degrees 1,2#4,5,6. But in these examples the background harmony is A7, so the root is the 2nd note on SF1. This way the degrees are b7,1,3,4,5 (therefore Mixolydian without M2 and M6).
