Gyro Stabilisers are a lesser common way to stabilise Camera movement.
German DoP Jost Vacano perfected the technique in 1981s DAS BOOT, and the tracking shots through the submarine are nothing short of breathtaking, earning him an Academy Award nomination.
Gyro Stabilisers maintain a handheld look that adds a sense urgency and a more involvement feel for the audience.
A gyro Stabiliser rotates weights with extremely high RPM adding inertia to a system …and produce a siren song to deal with.
Just like Gimbal systems, Gyroscopes stabilise the orientation of a system, not their position… this is why we combine it with a Tilta Float adding stabilisation to the position and supporting the weight.
We are working on an episode about the subject… let us know if you have questions.

I have been considering a gyro unit from Kenyon Labs and would be very grateful to see a full test review of the very same two-axis unit you displayed in your short above... this is exactly the kind of subject that makes Media Division the only place to go to find serious answers to questions that only professionals ever ask.

I remember the Pille gyrostabilizer used for Slumdog Millionaire hand held shots on the SI2K. Been trying to find something like that since then without luck. Looking forward for the episode.

Kenyo is basically the only option out there.... like the 4x4 you see here. You can buy one new and now and then one pops up on ebay

I used one of those for a photo shoot once. We wanted a slow shutter speed shot of a MV-22 in flight (think 1/20s). We got the shots, but also wrecked the gyro stabilizer in the process... Oops... Remember kids, ALWAYS get the rental insurance. Things happen

OHHHHH You've got a Gravity one !! It's my fav way of using my easyrig stabil ! Interesting to see you using it this way... The big con of the gyro is well... the huge amount of noise.

True… and there are many other good reasons to use a gimbal, but… if it’s good, it’s good

quite a confusing name, now that gyro stabilizers usually refer to using mems gyroscopic data to stabilize in post :)

Never heard of this before, how does it compare to a gimbal, or just adding more weight to the camera? Can the strenght of the effect be edjusted by decreasing the speed of the flywheels?
@MediaDivision
@MediaDivision Жыл бұрын
That is a long story… to long for a comment. We will make an episode about it. But of course, the slower the rotation the less stabilizing effect.

@@MediaDivision well I was more planning to use the hdd disks because they are already balanced. Then put probably 15 on a faster and stronger motor. do that for all three axis.
@MediaDivision
@MediaDivision Жыл бұрын
@@CinemaEngineer I am not sure what you mean with "already balanced". You can only spin fast enough with Helium fill... at least without burning up the platters.
@CinemaEngineer
@CinemaEngineer Жыл бұрын
@@MediaDivision the disks are balanced, so you can spin them up to 7k rpm without the system shaking and making the camera less stable than it was without the gyro. I would remove the disks from the hdd and remount them on a totally new motor, and i would mount 15 disks instead of the 3-4 a common hdd has. more mass spinning and more speed means more resistance to change.
