This is one of my favorite things I've ever done. I want to extend my gratitude to everyone who participated last year. And best yet! This Sunday, during The Oscars, we're doing it again! Refer to last year's announcement video in the description for the rules. I'll also be making a video on my second channel "Joel Talks About Movies" where I talk about some other favorite submissions of mine that I didn't have time for in this video. I love movies. Thank you all

Hey Joel! I missed the chance to participate in this last year, but I definitely want to try this year! I do have some questions: - How much preparation is allowed beforehand? Can we make props, plan out dialogue and shots, etc? - Is there a limit to what footage we can use? For example, could I ask a friend in another state to film something during the time frame and include that? - During the week of editing, how much can we add? Can digital things like backgrounds/animations be made during that time? Thank you so much for organizing this! I'm hoping it'll help me get unstuck from the perfectionism that tends to stop me from creating.
@Joel-Haver
@Joel-Haver Жыл бұрын
@@TacoCat17 You are allowed to prepare, but I promise you any strict planning is doomed to go up in flames haha, this time frame is brutal and you gotta roll with the punches. In the case of animation, I’d say drawing characters and backgrounds ahead of time is the equivalent to casting actors and finding locations so it’s fair game. But in this case all the animation should be done in the timeframe, like Playtoise. Friends in other states are more than welcome to film for your movie! As long as it’s in the timeframe. Last year for my movie we had multiple scenes being shot at once. Editing effects and whatnot are all fair game, as long as you aren’t creating the entire content of your movie in that time. The story/footage/dialogue should all be captured during The Oscars! I hope this helps, happy to hear you’re participating!

Director of Woodland here. This contest was such a wonderful thing to put out into the world. Truly life-giving stuff. For many independent filmmakers, Joel's work is proof that films can be made with no budget at all. For many others, Joel has taught that they are filmmakers too. What a great contest, what great creativity.

The Oulipo were a group of French writers who believed that some of the most beautiful art could come from constraints. They wrote many novels with crazy constraints such as not using the letter e (called a Lipogram) or writing a story based on the cards you draw from a Tarot card deck. One of them even wrote a sonnet which can have any of the lines placed at any spot in the sonnet and it still works as a sonnet which means it is actually one hundred billion poems in one, which is also the title coincidentally. That poem is by Raymond Queneau . So yea constraints like a 3 hour time limit is a great way to produce really awesome and special art.

Hello Jennifer, I'm so happy you got mentioned and have some recognition for your movie and also for inspiring other people like myself. I watched a lot of the movies and noticed you had left positive, helpful comments on a lot of the movies I watched. Making my movie last year for the competition was probably the most fun I had on KZbin and 2022. However, I realized the movie I would do for the competition this Sunday is too long to do in three hours so I started a couple of days ago. I won't be able to enter the contest. But I will post it on my channel. I get to play four characters and eat a lot of ice cream. The title is The Devil Goes down to KZbin. Thanks again, Jennifer. I'm looking forward to seeing your movie.

Being a part of this challenge is something I'll never forget. The film I made only turned out to be 30 minutes long, and I remember being disappointed at the time. Looking back, I'm so glad I did it. After making the film I just kept the creating going. And now making videos is my favorite thing to do. I love this contest because it takes the pressure off of creating. It made me realize that not everything I make has to be perfect or have great editing, acting, or the perfect take. After making this film, I found myself embracing improv more and only shooting 1 take sometimes. I'm so grateful that you made this challenge because I think its had a very positive impact on many people's lives.

This was such a beautiful thing Joel. Creating for creating's sake is a powerful thing, and it's so great to see so many filmmakers new and old come together to do something so ridiculous all at once. We're shattering the mentality of "You can't a movie because..." and instead making movies just because we can. Cant wait to see what new magic is made this Sunday. Happy creating!

joel is such a positive presence on the internet. this is great, and the dedication to get through everything people made is really admirable. i hope everyone is proud!!! also wanted to say how much i love that joel encourages art for the sake of art, its not mandatory to sell it. i like to illustrate, at some point people were paying me for it, but it kind of killed the passion for a moment. art without payment, just because you like making it, is valuable, too.

Joel not only has it been great to see your channel grow over the years, but its so great to see you not only encourage others to create you are giving them a no-strings platform to have their work seen. Filmmaking has "meant" a ton of things over the past 150 years. With the access to video technology we have today, I think that stuffy wrapped up limited definition of "Filmmaking" has been expanded to a point it never has been before (might be stating the obvious). Thanks for looking out for others and keeping the spirit alive. Much love and good luck Sunday everyone!

This is such a great concept! It reminds me of a GameJam, which is a similar type of challenge for game development. To prevent cheating there you have a "theme" which the game has to evolve around in some form. It is revealed at the beginning of the jam and really helps to create something on the spot instead of what you've been thinking about beforehand. Maybe it would be a good fit for this format as well! It is of course limiting, but it is always really abstract and limitations are also kind of fun for creativity. Just a thought, keep it up! :)
