When I was shooting and wanted to measure my draw I used a piece of cardboard with a slit cut in it. I put it on the arrow and drew it back. The cardboard would slide as I drew the bow back to my exact drawlength. You don't need someone to look at it for you.

I measure my draw lenght with a clothes peg on my arrow. Fully draw to your anchor point and then measure the distance from the nock's throat to the clothes peg on your arrow.

The advice you gave me awhile back was spot on. Thanks again! Rule of thumb with the weights up front is very helpful. Most manufacturers spine charts show only 100-150gr point weights (head plus insert). Not realistic at all for hunting loads. I ended up going with Easton Axis 5mm Trads in a 500 instead of the Black Eagle Instincts. I have 150gr VPA’s up front right now with the 25gr half out insert, but nice to know I can get away with a 200gr head up front using the same insert!

You actually mentioned my draw length, more or less. 27" My 2 recurves are marked as 40#, and according to 3RiversArchery, that means I'm pulling about 37#. (also mentioned that one is about average length and the other is shorter, like 54", and they said that the bow length is irrelevant) And in regards to the Gold Tip Warriors I've been getting, I got a couple 600 spine the other and tried them out along side the 500, both at 30" and using the 100 grain field points (2 of each). Shot the 4 four times. The 600 did seem to shoot straighter at first, but the more I shot, the harder it was to tell.
@2greeksandacamera
@2greeksandacamera Жыл бұрын
Jeff a question and suggestion if I may, to help someone new to Goldtips (including myself) would be for you to mention as you explain to go up to 600 or down to 400 or even 300 from let’s say the starting point of 500 spine, to also add the words stiffer or less stiff, according to the numbers. This would help to clarify what you are saying. My 30” (purchased length) 500’s are bare shaft tuning at ten yards with nocks flipping far to the left shooting LH from my 40 lb. recurve (43 at my draw length). No amount of adding brass inserts helps it. Also, using only an insert and 125 gr. field tip doesn’t help it. They still flip left into my sandbank target. My release and form are fine from a lifetime of bowhunting since age 4 but mostly wood arrows. I love Forrester wood shifts the best. But these Goldtips not cooperating is frustrating. This indicates my need for a stiffer shaft if my brain cells are rubbing together correctly. One of my friends says to get 600’s (is this weaker or stiffer? than the 500’s?) but my other friend says to get 400’s (is this weaker or stiffer than the 500’s?). Thanks!

@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 11 ай бұрын
Yes sir if the limb butts are both cut square and exactly alike that’s probably the case, most black hunters and Toparchery bows have a cut on the corners of the top limb to match the sight window and if they’re identical just see which way shoots best because they’re supposed to be both exact strength to give them an even tiller but it’s even better if the top limb is slightly weaker giving what’s called a positive tiller but you’ll just have to try and see what works best and hopefully the top limb is notched on the corner 👍🏻

Love your videos thanks for all the info I’m switching to a striker classic 58” longbow from a CD WF19 Uhkaa limbed recurve. I draw 27 like you. Bow is marked 45 @28 so I’m guessing I’m drawing 43. I have a peculiar conundrum. I need to cut my shafts at 27 and 3/4 to maintain a fixed crawl at 20 yds. I plan on shooting Easton axis traditionals with 75gr brass inserts and Zwicky eskimo screw in heads which I believe are 175gr for 250 up front. Should I order 600 or 500? You’re so right the charts don’t account for 250 gr up front. Thanks in advance!! Matt
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 Жыл бұрын
I’m going to say a 600 just because with a fixed crawl you’ll have a little less energy than split and with it cut less than 28” and pulling less than 45# on the bow the 500’s might be a tad stiff so I’m gonna say a 600 in axis plus they actually spine a hair stiffer than standard arrows so you should be good going 600👍🏻

It will no problem if you’re not drawing much more than 40# on a 29” arrow, the wraps and lumenock will actually stiffen it a little so you should be fine especially with a longbow 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Thanks David, you’ll probably want to go with some 700 spine Gold Tip Warriors from 3rivers pre fletched and just run a stock insert with like a 125-150 grain field point it should shoot great especially if they’re cut about 30” you can also buy them factory fletched from Lancaster one at a time or however many you need they’re really good and cheap!

Thank you so much Jeff for perfect informative video! I'm so glad you are sending again and looking happy! I hade a problem with already well tuned arrows. I hade 400 spine 29 inches cut arrows perfectly turned to my 50# recurve which I draw 47-48 from it. I changed the string which used to be 12 strand to first 16 strand D-97. The arrows or maybe better to say the string become to be so slow that the arrows becomes to be too stiff. I hade to cut two strands on the string (to go to 14 strands) to make the bow faster and in the same time more power to the arrow. It helped a bit but the arrows on the bare shaft are still too stiff. (I have 250 grains in front.) Do you have any thoughts on that? Is that possible that different string make such a different? Hey Jeff and channel fans. Just started shooting a Mandarin Duck Black Hunter 60" Recurve at 40#@28". My draw is 28" and ordered 30" carbon SP500 spine arrows to practice with. They have about 100 grain tips, and cheap aluminum inserts, and nock left at 10-15 yards. Not shooting any further until I get some practice. What are my options if I want to start adding hunting weight for small game (rabits, squirrels, turkeys, and such)? I assume not much more weight is needed. Will these 500 spine arrows work with my draw or should I get 600's? I am making a bare shaft to test and better tune but maybe they're nocking left due to the short shooting distance. Thank You for any advice.

If it’s not a gold tip arrow like warriors or traditionals or even Easton don’t trust the reading on bare shafts but a 500 should be plenty stiff enough also check the actual weight and draw length sometimes they’re different than what you think but all of that really doesn’t matter as long as they fly good for practicing but I’m betting they’re actually too stiff needing some more point weight 👍🏻

Okay everything depends on the total length you want to have the arrow, if it’s say under 28” probably a 400 if longer then I’d say a 340 and if it’s a hair stiff you can always run like 275-300 grains up front but it might be best to order a test kit from 3rivers to play with first then you’ll know for sure what the bow likes 👍🏻

@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 8 ай бұрын
Well that’s an interesting one! Okay first off a satori will shoot a stiffer spine fine because they’re cut well past center and you are able to add or take away plastic shims from the strike plate and they’re pretty powerful as well so in the case of a 30” arrow I’m saying a 400 spine, if you want to shoot plenty of point weight and get the arrows over 500 grains that’ll be what you want, if you’re really drawing 28.5” that is. If you decide to shoot 500’s you’ll want a couple of the shims in place and cut the arrows 29.5” with around 200 grains up front but that’ll only give you around a 480 grain arrow max unless you build some a slightly heavier gpi like most coated or traditional finishes offer opposed to black shafts👍🏻

That said I'[d like to shoot a 30"arrow with 125g point, but the 3 Rivers chart said, If I read it right, that a 34" arrow with that point weight would work. The length doesn't matter too much to me. Just target shooting. Your thoughts?

@@Garuda16 man that’s really odd, any 36# bow with only that much point weight should shoot 600’s even at full length unless you’re getting a false reading, in my opinion a 50 spine would definitely have to be at least 31” with some decent point weight to tune out of it but really the best thing to do call the guys and make sure but then again the slim diameter.204 do defiantly tend weaker than standard shafts no matter what they’re labeled so the Eichlers might need to be 500’s 👍🏻

Okay you’ll want to go with some 340’s and run about 250 grains up front and you will be able to go a little more if you want with a 340 only because of the poundage and draw length but that would be an awesome hunting setup, I would recommend getting an arrow like gold tip or Easton that’s anywhere from 9-11 grains per pound to give you a total finished weight of 500 grains plus 👍🏻

Great info here 👍Just wondering though what your thoughts are on the minimum required GPI for a hunting set up with a 500 arrow and 250gr up front with a draw weight of 45lb , as you know there can be quite a big GPI margin between the cheaper vs expensive arrows ... the cheaper lighter Skylon Carbon Edge 6.2´s for example in 500gr only run at 5.80 GPI where as the thicker walled more expensive pins obviously run with a higher GPI even though they´re the same spine weight of 500... Am I off track here , or should I just go with GPP instead (total finished arrow weight) ?

Yes sir depending on exactly how long you’re actual shafts will be at 400 should be fine that is if they’re not over 31” and not too much point weight, a 400 will usually tune with up to 300gr total, but if you’re wanting to run Ethics and a 175gr at your length I’d go with a 340 but it greatly depends on if you’re actually drawing the bow that far (29”) if so you can still get by with 400’s cut at 30 1/2” most likely but I’d buy a bare shaft test kit from 3rivers to see for sure 👍🏻

Yes sir depending on length, a heavier gpi shaft like victory or axis, something with small diameter and thicker wall will usually get there on a 29” arrow 👍🏻

I'm definitely no Jeff when it comes arrow ology. But if this helps you what the heck.... I tried lots of stuff... But worked for me is the Very reasonable$ Red labeled hunter 500 gold tips... Thair only 7.3 grains per inch... If you compare that to the other shafts You'll Notice they're quite a bit lighter. That means you're going to have more FOC weight with whatever you use which is a good thing.... For example I'm shooting a 45 pound recurve at 28-1/2" I'm running 200gr filed point and 100 grain brass... 545gr finished arrow. UNBELIEVABLE ACCURACY AND WITH 200gr BRODHEADS... If you try this and it works please send me a message...God Bless 🙏

@@miragexl007 Yes sir usually with those specs a 500 is the ticket but it all depends on the bow itself and point weight of course that’s why I recommend getting a bare shaft test kit to know for sure!

Wish I saw this a month ago. I just bought the wrong arrows for both my bows. So I have two dozen wrong size. Can't afford to buy another at the moment. I bought gold tip classic traditionals 9/32 shafts and gold tip blems 5/16 shafts in 500 spine. Completely cut and fletched the smaller diameters. Maybe if somebody is interested I could get some of my money back and get what I need

Ok I have more info. 50# Montana longbow I pull 26.5 draw so I'm right on that 47# ish line. Changed brace height from 7.5 to 8 The 500 gold tip 9/32 flew better than the 400 warriors bare shaft 5/16 But the gold tip 500 at a 5/16 had a major wobble in the flight.. All three hit where I wanted with 175 zwickie 4 blade with 50gr inserts. The higher brace height seemed to help with my nock high situation I was having that I couldn't correct by moving the nock. Arrow is 28.5 length

Whatevs. Look, hold both of your hands in front of you, palms together. Take the measurement from your chest to the tip of your fingers, and add forty-seven inches. That is how long your arrow should be. Make the OK symbol with your fingers. Your arrow should be no smaller than the diameter created by you index finger and thumb. I don't know what the Hell, "spine", is - just make sure you can't bend your arrow AT ALL, using ANY amount of force. A good solid arrow should weigh between eight and seventeen pounds. It's so stupid making a whole video about this...
