Sir, what a fabulous, useful video you made for all us diehard vintage Elna fans! My Elna Air Electronic turned FORTY on Christmas Day, and when I brought it out of retirement to make masks for the pandemic, I fell in love with sewing all over again after too many years away as a traveling executive. I had forgotten some of the details you so carefully and elegantly demonstrated. Thanks to you, now I will get even better use out of my sweet Elna than I did before...and realize that other than self-threading needles and self-snipping threads, those lightweight modern machine have little to offer that my Elna cannot already perform so well. Thank you for your dedication to care and craftsmanship. Patti Crane, Los Angeles

My mum bought this very machine for me, only 1 year old, in 1984 for $800 Australian dollars. It was a LOT of money back then, and hard earned. We have both used it to death, and have ever only serviced it 3 times in 36 years. It is a beast, and is still going flawlessly! Would never part with this one! Great video, thank you!

Good morning… my wife has an Elna Air Electronic. As you demonstrated it works by air pressure from the foot control. However it seems to be losing pressure after an about 10- 15 seconds. We replaced the foot control with the line up to the machine. It did not resolve the issue. Hers the irony, Although we are in California, this machine traveled to NZ and back in the late 1980s where I am from before we moved to CA 😊. Any clue on what the problem might be would be greatly appreciated!! Many thanks.

I bought my machine new in the 70s. I can't find my manuals (packed away in some boxes of books) and needed to oil and clean the machine after some time of disuse. Your video was just what I needed. I watched almost the whole thing to remind me of how to use all the stitches. This machine is wonderful. I can't believe how dependable it has been over the years. I made tailored jackets and coats, Halloween costumes, drapes. I think I only paid about $500 for it, which was certainly a bargain considering all the years it has served me.

Excellent in depth video covering just about everything. Brilliant demo about how the bobbin thread goes between the two fingered sprung lever. You were not shy of the button hole and I am thankful for that. I just bought mine today and was hoping for a button hole demo with this machine. What a fantastic solid beautifully built little beauty. Knocks the socks off any Singer 221 Featherweight which are grossly overpriced . For a small portable machine this cannot be beaten. Easily level pegging with Bernina. ( Old metal ones) Both machines are built like Rolls Royces. Thanks for the Vid. What a little pearler!

Hi, I'm the one who asked u abt bernina 830 record a few days ago. I returned the bernina 830 due to a possible motor issue and I got myself a Elna Air Electronic SU instead. It is a blue and white machine. I want to thank you for your detailed videos, thanks to you I got to know about Elna machines, that was why I decided to get the Elna instead, bcos it looks so retro and cute and yet functional. Everything works fine, the stitches are great, the cams work well, but the machine sounds like a mini typewriter. Folks in the Elna group say that it should be quiet, it should be purring but mine isn't. The noise is exactly the same as yours. So I shouldn't be worried if it is too noisy? I opened up the bobbin plate and the top part of the machine and see that it is oiled nearly everywhere. It is definitely noisier than my plastic brother Innovis machine. Hope to hear your opinion on this. Thank you.

I recently came into a SU 68 and have gone through most everything on it cleaning and oiling including the entire bottom end. While I went to test stitching I noticed the needle clamped in with an angle instead of a true front to back orientation. The needle clamp is positioned just as I would expect it to be but the slot in the needle bar is not directly in the center and this has the needle rotated about 5 degrees or so clockwise from the top down view. I had the impression that the needle bar had gotten out of rotation and that someone had previously rotated the clamp to be straight rather than the needle bar itself which seemed odd. I'm looking at this video at the 12:52 mark and this needle bar looks like what mine has going on. I also notice the exact same situation on the Jubile video. Are these Elnas actually designed that way? Though the bobbin is off center the hook shuttle is on center line with the needle and would make me think that the needle should be aligned to a true front to rear orientation. Can anyone verify either way before I reorient this one and the clamp? I'd rather not have to undo my "fix" if it is not correct. Have been unable to find an available service manual that's downloadable yet.

Great video tutorial re Elna Air Electronic. I purchased my SU model in 1979 and she still goes great. One question I do have is I only thought there was one red mark in the bobbin area to oil but you pointed out there are several points that need oilding including when you removed the top of the machine. Do you have a video of where else I need to oil or would I need to take it to a sewing machine repair shop? Also I have had my under stitching unravel and found I needed to turn the tension dial (which was always on 4) to between 5 & 6. Still not perfect but works better. Would you know why the tension has changed after all these years by any chance? From New Zealand 8-)

I was sewing away very happily when I noticed that the thread from the top downwards was almost falling out from each area that I threaded it (from the hook that goes up and down,) it even came out if the needle at one point! Seems my stitches are not stitching a nice straight stitch but slightly slanted! I'm almost thinking I'm going to have to take it to a sewing machine mechanic. Would you perhaps have any further helpful tips why this may be happening please? My husband thought he might have lowered the white tension release bolt in the top of the machine may have lowered it too much and not the 5.5mm you recommended? Would it pay to go over this step again? Many thanks in advance.

Just a follow up in case it's of value to anyone ... the original problem was with the machine sometimes remaining running despite taking your foot off the controller. It had been taken to a service centre but the problem returned a few days later. On examination of the air actuator, the guide rod didn't move nicely in the guide hole and the hole was slightly oval and impregnated with carbon dust which enabled the rod to rack and lock despite oiling. Removing 1/10mm off the diameter returned it to round and removed the 'gritty' feel and a tiny application of ptfe grease gave it a nice feel when depressing the speed pins. So far so good but like all repairs, time will be the ultimate judge. Thanks again for you help. (ps you probably are already aware but I had to remove the power spec. badge to access the screws to gain access to the actuator. @@InStitches

Make sure you are using a leather needle as they are designed to cut the leather instead of punching holes. Also if the leather is relatively thick you may see small loops on the under side of the seam. This means the top tension is too loose. Tighten the top tension until the loops disappear.

@@kathyrobertson2458 Make sure the top thread is following the path as shown in the manual. Also make sure the thread goes between the tension disks properly and that there is no lint jammed in between the disks. Also make sure the tension is set to about 5. Replace the needle with a brand new one.
@kathyrobertson45214 жыл бұрын
@@kathyrobertson2458 I have figured out the problem and have it working, but this is my question. On the top thread tension that the thread goes around there is a disk. You mention it in your video. I have never worried whether the thread is above or below this disk. If I have it above the disk the tension works and everything is fine. If it is below the disk, it bunches up. So what do I need to know about this tension area that I am missing?
@InStitches4 жыл бұрын
That would indicate there's something like lint between the middle and lower disk that's keeping it from clamping the thread. With the presser foot raised, get a torch and something like tweezers to get in between the disks and clean in between them. It's also possible there is a groove worn in the disks from a lot of use. That's more difficult to sort.

Hello! Thank you so much for all those clear explanations, I'v just received the same Elna TSP from my mother-in-law who got it 40 years ago and rarely used it :) It is like new! But the machine has a problem with the tension on the top thread. The top thread can be seen (comes through the tissu) on the underside of the tissu when sewing. I'm pretty sure that the top thread is not held tight enough in the tensioner on the top left of the machine. Actually, when I pull the thread going around the tensioner with my hand, there is no resistance at all. I have tried to open the top cover of the machine to see if I can modify the tension from inside, but the stays hocked on the handle and I can't unscrew the screws of the handle... Do you have another video of how to open the machine? Do you have any idea how I can modify the tension on that tensioner? Thank you sooooo much for your help, from Switzerland, land of Elna and Bernina :)
@InStitches4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. When testing the top tension, make sure the presser foot is in the down position. Make sure the tension disks are clean and nothing is caught between them. To remove the cover, you will need to remove the small clip on the handle hinge and slide the handle off.

Sir, I REALLY need your advice on this machine. I took it in for a service, and since then, my straight stitch is wavy and uneven. Not like it used to be at all. Tried all recommendations I can find, but maybe it's something specific to this model that you could advise? I changed the threads, new needle, even re-aligned the feed dogs. None of it seems to help the straight stitch remain perfectly straight.

Maybe take it back to your service person? It could be a tension issue? I assume you've made sure it's set to straight on the dials?

@InStitches4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yes I think it will handle jeans.

Hi, May I ask what class bobbin the air electronic takes? I have a Jubile type 45. Are they class 66 or class 15?
@InStitches2 жыл бұрын
Hi, neither class 66 or 15 fit the air electronics. The Elna has a specific bobbin. Part number is 426000. You should be able to but them online or at your closest sewing machine supplier. Thanks.

This is super helpful! Thank you! A couple of questions (being a total noob in the sewing game): I have an Elna Jubilee and it is very similar to your machine in this video. So. How do I get a basic straight stitch, not an elastic straight stitch? I can't seem to figure it out.
@InStitches5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind comments. The right hand dial should not be set to - S +. Make sure it is on about 3 for normal sewing.

I am buying the exact machine but they say the zigzag does not work. It only does straight stitch. It's only $25 so I am going to buy it. Can you tell me what to look for in the hope of fixing why it only does straight stitch I would very much appreciate it. Thank you. Pamela

@@InStitches thank you so much. I bought the machine last night. It is one that takes cams but did not come with any of tools or feet. I've taken the top off and liked as you show in your video. I will continue to move it until it loosens for me. Fingers crossed it will zigzag after

Help my wheel is stuck will not turn needle up or down ( machine Elna Jublir (red in color) i had ran a new bobbin thread. When this happen? I push thé button on thé inside of wheel. Still nothing please help? Sherry.
@InStitches4 жыл бұрын
It's difficult to say exactly but maybe the machine is seized? Try oiling as per the manual (find a manual online if you don't have one) and warm the machine to room temperature if you live in a cold region.

Is there any reason my machine doesn’t grab the bobbin thread? It isn’t this exact machine it’s the Elba Jubile duplex.
@InStitches4 жыл бұрын
Try changing the needle first. Use a brand new one out of the packet.

@InStitches4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. There could be many reasons for this issue. It's likely there is thread jammed in the hook area so try there first.
