My daughter has taken welding all 4 years of high school. She will come out with a basic certification and already has her OSHA10 card from the program as well. Pretty neat that they offer that stuff now. She is being recruited by the Tulsa welding school, she has to choose between welding, and veterinary school; she has a big decision to make this spring.

My high school that I went to had welding classes, Welding 1, Welding 2, and Welding 3. If you got a A- or greater you earned college credits to Blackhawk Technical College welding course.

Man those booths are awesome! You have room to spread out and stretch and get comfortable. I really dig this approach. A very experienced welder who did this type of work told me that if you can learn to weld round the rest will fall in place.

I like the classroom first. That's what I went through when I went to school. Safety, how to setup your machine,...etc. I say this from experience. Later I went through apprenticeship and we went straight to the shop and I have seen guys struggling (especially when you have 10+ guys and 1 teacher).

I’m not sure you will ever see this but I have watched your videos for a while now, it influenced me to get into welding and I chose Pennsylvania College of Technology for a bachelors in welding and fabrication engineering. It’s a state of the art facility, there are a few videos on the college KZbin page, and the college offers a bachelors in welding and fabrication engineering and two associates degrees, also a minor in NDT. If you’re ever in PA it’s worth it to come check it out, pretty impressive stuff! Love the videos, has me itching to graduate!

I spent 4. years learning welding in High School. Fortunately we had a great Vocational program because I was not a school work genius. Our school had an Auto Shop and a Wood Shop also a Hydraulics and Pnuematics class, we Had a welding Shop and a complete Machine Shop. We had at least 6. 14x40 lathes and a few 16x40 or larger we had Bridgeport Mills and a Shaper and a Power Hacksaw and a complete Gas Forge with a few 300# anvils and tons of tongs and different hammers. We welded lots of pads and then the teacher would have us put them on the shaper and look for porosity and slag pockets etc. I loved it and became a teacher aid and then went to a community college and finished up my certs there. It's a crying shame every school doesn't have such programs like that for kids like me that in my case suffered from Dyslexia and ADHD. I sucked at school work but excelled at wood and metal and hydraulics and pnuematics. All our equip was old navy battleship stuff our teacher was an Old Greek bridge welder. we did tons of projects around the schools and serviced the teachers cars for a cheap price to keep us in welding rod and gas and steel etc. We also had a construction class that built projects at the schools we built a new pool house etc and we also had an auto bogy and paint class and paint booth. good times, now that i'm retired i'd love to go back and relive those days. I spent 24 years working in the oil patch building mud pumps and generator skids and accumulators and mud tanks and we did it all in house.

i worked for flint steel in memphis back in the 60's they were out of tulsa ok and when i went in the army, they had moved west of west memphis by the time i got out,we made pressure vessels that went to the oil fields in texas and ok,the last ones i worked on were sent to west texas,it took 5 flat cars to move one tank.they were 18 feet in diameter and the shells were rolled outta 1 inch plate steel,i would run the seams inside if needed and would run the outside seams.we could stay inside the tank all day welding the seams.we would use 5/32 and 1/4 wire with flux in a hopper that run out over the wire.all the seams were x-rayed

Going to school, any school the lecture part can be boring. Some people are good at the lecture part and some are not. To me the learning begins with the hands on. Then the real learning begins on the job. On the jobsite there are a lot of safety rules and procedures that you may not get taught in school. Then there is all the environmental conditions. It takes decedication to learn the techniques of welding pipe. It's like sports, some are natural athlete's and some need coaching. That's great having a more hands on school.
