How to learn and apply Burton Grip, which is the most mechanically simple and inherently physiologically conducive means of holding two mallets in one hand. Also the most appropriate grip to teach to younger students.
Recorded at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in November of 2017 by Sam Kerr.

Probably the best video I've seen on the subject so far. I have been using the Stevens grip for a long while, but I now have a joint injury in one of my small fingers due to my dog being goofy. It's been painful to play since all the fingers need to do a lot of work, so I decided to start looking into changing to the Burton grip since that will put far less pressure on that finger. We'll see what happens. Thank you!

Thank you, I'm really glad that you enjoyed the video! I'm really sorry to hear about your injury, though. I typically use Stevens' Technique as well, but sometimes Burton is really useful. Any prognosis on your injury? Have you considered seeing a sports therapist? I went and saw one once for an injury and once for tendonitis, and their advice was amazing and invaluable. Where abouts in the world are you watching from? I'm always curious about that! 🙂

I'm planning on professionally shooting a Stevens' Technique one soon when I have the time to do so. But I want to wait until I can really do it well given how intricate and complicated the technique is.

Good vid but you said traditional grip is unhealthy but I’ve been using traditional for 16 years now and have never had any problems whatsoever😕

Well, this is a conclusion that I once drew after having collaborated with a sports therapist and a doctor on a paper we wrote about repetitive strain injuries due to various four mallet grips. Additionally, the statement about traditional grip relates back to what I was saying near the beginning of the video about learning a grip while your muscles are still in an adolescent stage of physiological development. Keiko Abe has openly stated that traditional grip is “inherently unhealthy” and that you have to be very careful while using it in order to not “automatically injure yourself,” to quote her words from a masterclass of hers that I attended once. Leigh Stevens has also cautioned people repeatedly about the extent to which his grip lends itself to injury unless you wait to until your hands have fully grown before you start learning it, and unless you work with a very qualified instructor. But I’m very glad that traditional technique has worked for you for so long! I don’t think it’s a “bad” grip, I just don’t think it’s the best choice for a 14-year-old who is flying by the seat of their pants in a school instrumental music programme, which is the main demographic I was hoping to help - either directly and/or indirectly - when I shot the video.

I can’t answer that either. My videos are not monetized and I don’t pay to boost them.
