What a great insight. It is a real shame that instrument makers, especially in India are generally not held in high regard as makers are In western countries.

The music instrument makers can make a start by engraving their names or a have a unique symbol,symbolizing their work and decrease counterfeiters making similar instruments. How can Guitarists recognize a fake and Genuine Fender or a Stratocaster Guitar? Simple via engraved emblems and signs and these special signed instruments can be made for special customers or musicians to the craftsmans discretion.

Seems to be very difficult for a foreigner to buy a sitar directly from the builder. Amazon have a indian version but it doesn't ship to my country.

I bought one Sitar from your father in the 1980s. I also purchased a 6 string all wood instrumental Tanpura which I still use on concert occasions. It is sad the condition of instrument makers today. Hiren Roy's shop also closed and his son, Barun whom I bought a Sitar from 20 years back now makes from his home. The cost of the instruments has gone up a lot since the first Sitar I bought from Kishori Naskar for Rs400 back in 1968. I think the government should give grants to makers to keep the tradition going as these are handcrafted instruments not like mass-produced guitars in factories.

In the west you guys would be worshiped. Instrument makers are held in very high esteem, name recognition is important with quality instruments. Additionally in the west users or "famous people" will always give credit to the makers and have custom instruments built for them. Maybe your PR needs attention, start with putting your name prominently on the instrument. They do all look the same, weather it's a sitar, violin, guitar or oboe.
@dienamx66965 жыл бұрын
That may help but i think the other problem is how high in demand the instruments are maybe classical indian music may not be as popular these days so less people will buy it i think it would take off in the west as a gimmicky sort of thing perhaps.
@diyprojectsandhobbies98615 жыл бұрын
I agree. No name.....no proof. Because of this a lot counterfeit material is on market. Fender and Stratocaster Guitar how do we know their names? Simple they engrave, type, print or whatever they can to prevent it from being counterfeited.

Instrument makers themselves are responsible for the decline in demand for sitars, illogical price hikes and adamant attitudes of many sitar makers from Kolkata. Kolkata sitar makers are just not ready to evolve. I have purchased numerous sitars from Suman Karmakar, but none could meet my expectations. Lookwise, Suman's workmanship finish is excellent, but when it comes to the sound quality, I have never been satisfied. In contrast Miraj's sitar is gaining more popularity because of lesser price hikes and that Miraj sitar makers are ready to evolve as per every individual sitar player's demands. It is also obvious that an artist, in this case a sitar player will have more name and fame amongst the masses, whereas a good sitarmaker will have name and fame only amongst the sitar players and not amongst the masses of people.

It's not that these instruments' demand has declined. Today branding and advertising has become essential for every business to sustain and grow. If they want to remain in the business they need to do this.
@pedrova8058 Жыл бұрын
cheap outsouced labor, hundreds of chin3s3 cheap instrument put tremendous pressure on small builders, in almost any field. And to survive manufacturing and selling luxury instruments you have to have very good contacts; most of the small artisans do not survive (And we aren't even considering the issue of wood, it's increasingly difficult to get them. Overexploitation)

The instrument makers are partly to blame for the decline of their craft. They need to follow what Tabla players and makers, their efforts are paying off with Tabla receiving more recognition than Sitar, fue Tabla makers advertising on KZbin . There are no how to do videos on Sitar or any Indian instrument, many Western musicians have given videos and demonstration of Sitar and many other Indian instruments to repairs and their playing . Many Craftsman of music instruments are doing it for the the sake of it and expect a miracle to happen Indian instrument lovers are in foreign countries but they expect something miraculous to happen in India to their craft. Would the Indian instrument makers advertise teaching their skills to any foreigner, if they are willing to teach .
@clemalford97684 жыл бұрын
Tabla is more popular as rhythm is more international than the principles of Indian Classical Music. That is why people like Zakir Hussain get star status as he does loads of fusion stuff like Shakti. He also does percussion fusion with western electronic drums and Latin percussion.

Don't be critical and listen to what he is saying about the condition of the milieu there in Kolkata and India. The music lovers in Kolkata are trying to preserve the art and the artisans. It was far healthier back in the 50s and 60s. when I first went there. People had more time. Many instrument makers have given up due to the nature of the skill of manufacturing these instruments that are not made in mass-produced factories.
