A really short project overview for a self filling insulated dog watering station. You can see the prototype in the background. The new and improved version is fully insulated and is made from mostly commonly available parts. This solves a few design challenges I mention in the video. Enjoy! Carlos the wiener dog approved.

Got into hobby machining barely over 10 years ago. I definitely remember watching your backlog of videos on the train to and from work. It's always blown my mind that people like you have spent so much time sharing your work experience (not just the basics -- the in depth, nitty gritty). And then it blows my mind that it's available to so much of the world.

I had some of the same problems with the water digging. To the point that the reservoir would be emptied. My solution was to put a stainless wire grating below the water level. That took all the fun out of playing in the water and that behavior went away. No more dirty water.

Very nice. My brother had a similar need on his farm. His dogs are large. I joked that he should pick up a used toilet and hook it up to a hose, then use a brush every now and then to clean it and flush it. He took my joke seriously and did it. Loves the results.

I love the videos. In periods, I'll browse through the archives and watch the gold nuggets again, like the drill chuck restorations. And the wabble drive for the etching press(what happened to the press, by the way? I don't remember seeing how it turned out). And seeing how the three plate method is actually done, that was awesome. What would I like to see? More filing. You briefly showed us some straight edges you were making, things like that fascinates me. Using just elbow grease and some jigs that I certainly could make, you make tools that can then be used to restore an old junker machine that anyone could get for around scrap metal price. Kind of start-from-scratch machining.

The simple solution to keeping the big dog away from the little dogs bowls is to locate the bowls in a space with an entrance the big dog cant get too. I'm not sure how cold it gets where you are, but they do make water container heaters for livestock to keep it warm/not frozen in the winter.

That is GREAT. We have a motion controlled dog fountain that runs off 4 C batteries about 15 years old that is attached to the hose. The dog walks up to it stands there for a couple of seconds and the water turns on for about 10 seconds. If he wants more he just moves a little and the cycle repeats. Am AMAZED that they are no longer available. So as a dog guy I am constantly on the look for a solution for when this thing craps out.

Q: Why create a valve body that 'raised the outlet spigot' when you could have just bumped up the igloo container floor to make the offset? Seems like you went up to go down on the spigot side when you could have just gone up on the whole cooler and possibly raised the shoulders of the cooler container a bit higher? Was that then offsetting the CG of the full container to make it too unstable for the hinging?

Cooler wouldn’t need a hinge if raised enough to add 4 inches of Tygon, then just flex it to remove the hotel pan.
