After weeks of travel in your converted van, has there been any adverse conditions with your choice of insulation? Any squeaking or noise? Any odors? Is the insulation doing the job it was installed to do? I don't mean, in any way, to grill you on your conversion, I am just trying to choose the best choice of insulation for my conversion. You are so truthful and frank, I trust your option and experience. I hope you are having a good time at your sit-down location for the time you are there. You will, I hope, have tons of info on your experience where you are to share with your followers. It looks like a great place to be. Thanxz

I've been full time in it for a month now and am very pleased with the insulation. Its much quieter than I thought it would be. No problems with squeakiness, and I take it on some really bumpy roads. I would eliminate the use of RTV silicone inside. Its only on a couple places but I think I can notice it. All other surfaces were covered with a product to cover off gassing and it did a good job at that. Been experiencing temps between 40's-80's and have been comfortable and haven't overheated in full sun. Remember we are not professionals and are only showing what we have done and are not saying its the best way, etc. Lots of choices.

This is one of the best van insulating jobs I've come across yet. Finally someone did something to address thermal bridging. No, the R-value of the thin foam on top isn't a lot, but it will make a difference.

Van insulation is a popular subject for debate. A lot of people don't actually understand building physics and thus what they are trying to do, and heavy compromises are encouraged for space/robustness/cost reasons. It's fascinating to see how many variations on a theme there are (a lot of which aren't very good!)

1. Reflectix is not an insulator( R value is 0,5), but a heat radiant barier, and must be installed with at list 3/4 gap OFF the heat direction. It does nothing if touching van wall or floor. 2. Would't it be better/cheaper/easyer to install just 1inch rigid Whole foam panels instead of cutting small pieses, then spray foam, then cover with thin insulation?

SAY WAIT!: Great option AND A super cheap great overlooked free insulation material for what you might use to stuff into cavities in a van is used poly fill-pillow filling that you can fairly easily get for free from people's warn discarded sofa's are often found next to apartment dumpsters OR the Foam From the discarded Seat Cushions-New foam is Very expensive but this foam is FREE and should also sound deaden much! The cushions often have zippers or just cut the seat open. To cut foam to desired size and shapes, I use a hack saw taken out of it's holder, holding the blade loose in hand and saw back and forth although it does not work as quick and precise as an electric meat knife, it works ok. Don't use fiberglass insulation that goes in house attics, I think the loose fibers would get into your lungs no matter what. Because any soft pillow pads or pillow backs can be full of the stuff. Just cut open with a knife to find out and take what you want before the garbage company crushes the sofa. Of course you'd want to give it a quick close scan smell with your nose on it in case it has pet urine but really most apartment deter pets by either not allowing pets or they charge a lot to have them. Manufacturers make the poly basically from plastic bottles and it's fluffy and no one is allergic to it and it doesn't make you scratch and it doesn't absorb water and although it isn't as good of an insulation as foam, it does insulate by holding the air in it's fiber fluff pockets. Of course you can buy it new in bag at hobby departments but it can be kind of expensive and why buy new when you can get for free and save the environment with more new plastic?! Yep

remember, condensation is likely to form between the cold metal and ambient temperature, leave small gaps to allow air flow to dry out any condensation. otherwise the condensation will eat through the metal that will be visible from the outside, of course its not going to happen overnight, but it is likely to cause rust/corrosion over time and depending on ambient temperature, humidity, and rain fall

Hi, does anyone know why my rockwool insulation in the walls of my sprinter conversion would be damp? The walls were insulated with rock wool, kingspan and a bit of expanding foam. Then they were covered with foil vapour barrier and foil tape. I then battened and ply lined the walls. So I drilled out the electrical hook up today and discovered the rock wool is damp and the van hasn't even been lived in yet. Any help on this would be much appreciated. Thanks.

This is information on VOC free living. There are also low VOC paints. Whatever insulation that you use, I've seen people place reflectix over top of the insulation - blocking all moisture from the interior of the van. Reflectix and other products are used to protect the insulation from moisture. www.mychemicalfreehouse.net/2013/01/zero-voc-insulation.html

Nice job. I guess I would question using foam board and gluing it in place. You would be better off using expanding poly for the entire job a lot faster. The method you used and poly foam are both messy, but the board is labor intensive with a lower R-value. Neither method is really reversible, you used poly to seal the board.

Thank you. It is very clear and helpful. I am just a bit confused because your name is organic and it seems the products used might be offgassing and toxic. Have you checked into that for an enclosed space? I had thought you might use recycled denim or something. Can you share how you decided which products to use? Thank you and good job.
@FitOrganicLiving
@FitOrganicLiving 6 жыл бұрын
That's a very good question. I thought about using denim or wool, but was worried it would get wet from condensation and get moldy. I'm allergic to mold so I was scared to try those products. Manufacturers of the products we used had a "gas off" time that diminished with time. The final layer of 1/4" pink foam board we used had an indoor air quality certification, so it seems ok to use in this space. We have left the van open for long periods of time to make sure it airs out. In hindsight, I would of also strongly considered mineral wool and then a vapor barrier or foam board over that so the wood wouldn't be touching the metal.

Another option that I have thought about is to buy some cheap manmade duvets for beds, sew the shapes and cut them out and staple it onto any interior panelling as it is fitted. That should give a cheap sag free solution that will mould to the contours well, probably easy for the roof too.

@Wookey.
@Wookey. 4 жыл бұрын
That thin XPS foam should be a pretty good vapour barrier (if they sealed around holes and across tears/joints). I agree that reflectix on the floor is going to be very little use. That's a pity as this is the first time I've seen anyone make an effort to cover over all the thermal bridges from the ribbing. Even a thin 7mm layer like this will be a significant improvement in that regard, so full marks on that part.

Just for you other builders before you learn from these videos. You should always start by adding sound deadening mat for all panels to stop thin metal from rattling, floor, roof and walls. Not done here. Also bubble wrap on the floor is zero value here. It could have been at least a vapor barrier, but not made air tight. It has no insulation value by itself.
@FitOrganicLiving
@FitOrganicLiving 6 жыл бұрын
There is rattle trap squares on every panel from manufacturer, including ceiling, except the window wells. There was no need to add more. The van has been very quiet and wouldn't change it if we had to do it over. We didn't do much on insulating the floor, only showing what we did, not saying our way is the best and only way. Lots of choices out there. There was a felt sound deadening layer under floor layer also and its been quiet and have been camping full time for more than a month now and have been happy with results.

I think I would tape up all the holes in the bare walls and buy a small spray foam kit. Do multiple layers but trowel it each time. Making sure the humidity and temperature is within range for proper curing for each layer. I think doing so would save time, effort, and result in a bit greater thermal efficiency. I definitely wouldn’t spray into the holes because it’ll never cure

Thanks. It always seemed useless to me to cover everything with reflectix, it does nothing for the termal bridges and very little for the radiant heat because it's in front a wood wall that is not radiating much. This way you effectively protect the beam from condensation.

@gaslight.mp3 5 жыл бұрын
Well the stealth aspect is the ability to go anywhere and park anywhere without getting kicked off. I mean if you had an RV, you wouldn't be able to sleep in a walmart parking lot overnight; it sticks out too much. A lot of industries use white vans to ship materials, such as electrical companies etc. If you're on the road, it's the type of van you see everywhere. Blending in like that makes people more comfortable on the road, because if people don't notice you, they're likely not to steal from you. At least, that's why I wanna get a stealth van instead of an rv

CAMERON FELDHAUS - I’ve looked into the green foam kit. I asked them about the “off gas” concerns everyone slings around. They have a good safe product and you can even get mold and mildew proof. It’s a bit pricey in some ways (esp. if one scores a dozen poly boards out of a dumpster), but I suspect you gain time and money via reduced effort. I only found one build with it by search a Green foam spray kit. I’m sure it has to have been used more than once.

Every vehicle has to "breathe". There is no technical way of keeping moisture out of a vehicle, therefore you have to allow moisture to escape. Using foam to insulate the different layers of the bodywork may (!) create pockets when the foam accidentially forms a "V". I have bought a "naked" Peugeot boxer in mid summer, was working in it trough fall / winter and could observe moisture condensating on the tin surface and running down in streams on days when the athomsperic conditions are right. There is the possibility of pockets of water creating spots of rust "mid-wall", and accessing these spot would be difficult because the foam has to be removed. I case of an accident and the need for bodywork to be done it must be an extra pain in the butt because you cannot weld the tin anymore. hen again: Glueing layers / sheets (dont know the proper term) of insulation on is ok, because the water behind it towards the tin can evaporate as it likes because there is space for airflow. The German word is "Hinterlüftung" do with that what you want 🙂

Too bad there is no narration throughout the entire video; it would have been very helpful. Also, a lot of the video is too dark to see what's going on here. Too bad.. 🙁

I agree.There are lots of commercial van upfitters that sell safe easy to install cut to fit panels.That way you can take them out when you sell the van.

@@AndreasIndustriePro I think they are over doing it. Unless you are spending winters in North Dakota. A half inch factory cut to fit insulated inside panel from an upfitters along with a small Webasto or Espar heater will keep you warm easily in below zero weather.You just don't need all that weather sealing,foam board or spray foam sealers that are toxic as hell in a small enclosed space.People also over build electrical in these vans.A little bit go a long away.Less is better.

Stephane Genest I really don’t think more people are doing it, after all, people have been doing this for decades - it’s nothing new or special. It’s just that now everybody has to make a KZbin video about it. And I’m cool with that...occasionally I pick-up a good idea or two.

Don't over insulate, use real wood in the interior and your good to go. Get a sound heating system and proper ventilation so you can keep the moisture level down. A lot of these over insulated vans will be rustbuckets in no time because they trap moisture everywhere.

@@marcelvanbodegom Do you have some numbers on how much humidity is OK? Waiting on a diesel heater that should frankly be overkill for the small size I have, should be toasty warm.

@@zerotoadventure A diesel heater is a good investment. You don't want condensation on the inside areas of the van. A bit of mist or condensation on the windows is OK but not so much that its dripping.

Relative humidity values are dependent on temperature. But I would say keep it between 30 and 40 in winter.

How so? I'm doing research currently & need advice! I thought it would be a good idea to create a complete barrier around the van like he did with the xps, most van videos i see leave gaps where the metal is still exposed. This is one of the first videos i've seen with a completely flat surface, which seems like it would work to create a better barrier, what do you recommend?
