Integrating Content, Language, and Literacy in Secondary Dual Language Immersion Curriculum and Materials
The integration of content, language, and literacy instruction is essential to the development of high levels of bilingualism and biliteracy in dual language immersion (DLI) education. At the secondary level, DLI educators receive little support in this work, often lacking in targeted teacher education and professional development, cohesive programmatic support, and - central to this presentation - resources. In fact, almost no secondary content textbooks exist that are specifically designed for integrated content and language instruction in DLI contexts. This presentation shares work from an ongoing CARLA initiative to develop and pilot secondary Spanish DLI materials that are specifically developed to support teachers in both content and language instruction. Materials from a middle school Spanish social studies unit will be introduced along with the experiences of the teachers who piloted those materials in Fall 2024.
