I'm so glad nerdrum breathed life back into mastery and that he has shared his knowledge, it's unselfish and well needed. I'm sick to death of photographic realism and post modernism and abstract BS. This is meaningful. Meaning in HOW you paint rather than WHAT you paint, like every second Instagram artist trying their best to outdo the next artist. It's become boring and industry led. This is HOW and WHY we want to paint, not WHAT!

How will you ever free yourself from the clutches of Odd Nerdrum. All his students paint only worse versions of Nerdrum. But what's worse is that it's this kind of kitsch that's to blame for the fact that you hardly ever see contemporary realist painting in museums anymore.

@@achimborn5850 okay sure. well explain how freeing oneself from so called clutches works. painters have been emulating one another forever and trough practice and time have slowly improved and developped different aesthetic approaches. define contemporary realist painting as that word alone gives me headaches. does realism equal figurative storytelling in your opinion. or do you judge art on how realistic it looks. to the untrained eye all of nerdrum students seem to be copying him but i could differentiate a salvo from a nerdrum 10 out of 10 times. davinci was emulating his master, and so was rembrandt and pretty much every painter ever. why are they not considered as mere copies of their master?

Odd Nerdrum is something special! Although he's not an artist in my eyes, but a very good painter, I like Odd Nerdrum. But sorry, guys. All these imitations that come out of the Odd Nerdrum school are incredibly cheap knock-offs. It would be about the same as if Francis Bacon had students who copied his painting style. Ridiculous.
