There is a design based around a Stirling Cryocooler that Super cools one side and you can use anything to heat the other side. He is using a very primitive version of this engine. Newer models use free pistons in a helium atmosphere.

Steel wool has different levels of coarseness. The steel wool used in kitchens as metal sponges are still steel wool, just on the very course end of that scale. Also the ones used for cleaning are generally made of stainless steel!

You are going to have to use a metal tube(probably copper) that inserts into the syringe (rather than over the end) that expands when heated creating a stronger seal. Think Mark Roper's Icecream self locking container. You also need a heat resistant gasket to create the actual seal, there is such a thing in tape form so you can wrap the end of the copper tube inserted into the end of the syringe.

9:36 you're not allowed to blow off some steam! This is a Stirling engine video! If you find a piece of aluminum tubing that's the right diameter to slip over the ends of your syringes, you can JB-weld them in place. JB-weld can withstand 550 degrees Fahrenheit, allowing you to move the flexible tubing away from the heat, or just make a U bend directly in the aluminum tube to save heat energy.

That would indeed work, but the glass needs a special high temperature coating that absorbs light. In other words, it needs a black hi-temp paint coating. Without it the light just passes through and doesn't heat the glass sufficiently.

Many people have already said this, and I’m sure you know, Sterling engines typically work on a temperature differential. If you’re looking to improve performance, Heating up your hot piston is great, but you’re missing out on half of the power cycle by not cooling your cold piston. Your pistons housings should both also benefit from being made of metal. In order to cycle your engine you’re trying to pump thermal energy in and out of the inside air as fast as possible, so high thermal conductivity is a must for quick heat transfer. The tube connecting the pistons should absolutely stay as a thermal insulator though (you should totally try coating the connecting tube in Starlite if you have the means to make it) that way you don’t lose thermal energy before the air reaches the other piston. You could even try switching to a fluid with a higher thermal conductivity than air for faster cycling. With 2.8 thousand comments, this will probably get buried in your notifications quickly, but either way I look forward to your next iteration! I just started watching recently and I’m already loving your content. Keep doing awesome things!

I think you can heat up the cylinder by coiling a thick copper wire with the tip in one side. Place the burner so it burns the copper tip, this might heat the cylinder thanks to the thermal conductivity of the copper. Fire is away of melting materials and engine is still running. Well... maybe... I'm not an engineer in any way, so... ¯\_ツ_/¯ Really great video by the way! I recently discovered your channel and instantly subscribed, great work and really interesting stuff my friend ;) EDIT: Intead of a copper wire, use a thin copper tube vent around the cylinder. That will transfer hot air like the old steam locomotives boilers!

technically yeah but the temperature difference is significant, a small flame can reach 300C with ease whereas steam is around 100C unless you heat it more while it's a gas, which is a whole other problem. And if we only use the 100C water vapor the strength of the engine also diminishes due to the lack of energy being fed in through heat. @@IcannaHelp

Hey integza ... a piece of advice to increase the power output and the thermal efficiency of the stirling engine: - try increasing the initial pressure inside the alpha Stirling engine. - also u could reduce the clearance volume off the piston. - Try using copper wires as a regenerator and place them inside the tube ; this way u reduce the total dead volume in the engine and use space as a regenerator. For your tubing melting issues, you should try a heat shield, redirecting the heat from the flame. It looks like most of the damage is caused from the flame. Try an aluminum or copper flat cone shaped or flat collar on the neck of the piston.

Little tip: If you put the piece you want to heat at the middle of the flame (where's almost no oxygen and the flame is not burnng...) where it's hollow but rather near to the nop of the flame cone. There's the most heat.

There's still a Portugese accent there, but I wouldn't be shocked (or offended) if he played it up a little bit for his videos. The accent makes the videos more memorable and helps the channel stand out. He could also be putting more effort into "playing it down" for those segments to contrast them with his primary narration. Furthermore there's really no such thing as "speaking without an accent," as an accent is just the way you speak. I feel like if you would change the heat source or maybe isolate it from the tube while also using high heat material like the tubing in car engines, you could prevent the tube from burning. Also as for the regenerator, maybe making its own chamber directly in front of the heated cylinder/syringe would also help. I think if you could change your heat source to an electric heating mantle like used in chemistry could be a much more focused and insulated way to heat the glass syringe. I'm definitely not a professional, but these were just some theories I figured could improve upon your design. Hope it's helpful :)

Get control of your flame, Bro. The soot means inefficiency. Put SMALLER flame down lower; flame tip just below the part you're heating. Trust me... your efficiency depends on taming the flame

Definitely needs cold cylinder heat sink. You could solve the whole "burns tubing" problem by changing the burner to a wire wound heating element on the hot cylinder. These can generate just as much heat more efficiently and won't set fire to your transfer tube! The regenerator failed because when adding it you also looks like doubled the amount of air in the system. Rather than adjusting the stroke of the cylinders to accommodate it, you should place it in it's own chamber between the cylinders. This will increase the volume much less. Also, Integza's outfit fits perfectly in sepia tone 1816, and I gotta say that's pretty fantastic

@@FoxxFire91 That wasnt silicon tubing used in something like a Nitro R/C application. That clear tubing was simple fish tank shit. Silicon Nitro R/C fuel line, though isnt bomb proof, still lasts far longer under direct flame then that nylon shit does

I’d use heat resistant silicone/ceramic mix as the tube so it can bend but on both ends the plugs are ceramic so the heat doesn’t damage the silicone.

Bit of basic glass work, what could go wrong? (Well at least it's not flammable!). Oh, and I'm still trying to find the Tesla link... There must be one in there somewhere...

Maybe your engine will improve when the air on the cold side cools faster. I'm thinking of a piston in a waterbath or a metal piston, brass for example witch has a great heat response

essentially all every stirling engine is ... is a heat differential engine ... the bigger the difference the more work it can do ... the last version he displayed works best by retaining heat and moving the bulk of it from one side to the other quickly ... the more common hand held one uses your idea of cooling one side .. built in a larger scale can work very efficiently but size and weight become it's major limiting factors

Make the cylinder cradle and the flywheel support a single piece. The force of the syringes pushing back and forth means the cylinder cradle rocks. That, in turn, exposes the tube to the flame and destroys it. There's also a tiny bit of resistance with the more bearings you use

Hey integza try adding more air in the glass by having the syringe farther back as a norma engine uses almost all space to allow more expansion and compression as well as moving the fire under the center of the open space of the syringe and by doing everything above you can have more economizer in the system also avoiding the melting point of the plastic tube making it longer lasting and a higher pressure out put causing the machine to operate higher than your tests (ps. Also has a higher rpm due to the higher pressure output)

I have a few suggestions to help increase the efficiency of your system. First, it might help to add a temperature diffuser which would be the parts sticking out from the left-most piston seen in your animation at the end of the vid. If you do that, you should also insulate the rightmost piston, that would be the thick wall surrounding the right-most piston in your animation, that combined with your regenerator/economizer should help. I would have also liked to have seen the economizer in a separate section, just to stay true to the design outlined in your animation, but I doubt the effect would be anything significant compared to the insulation. I feel that if you had just insulated the syringes alone, your piston system would be much more effective and laster longer! (if you could get better pipes, of course) Again these are all suggestions I thought about when I saw your animation, I'm sure you had already noticed these things but I was wondering why not try them? I feel like they would help a lot!

Ever thought of melting glass tubing, and applying it directly to the syringes? You could also lengthen the glass tubing outwards, away from direct heat, and then cool it in a separate chamber or connect them with a rubber tube.

PTFE tube is used in hotends of 3D printers. they should hold up to the temperature but not sure about a direct flame.

Improvement proposal: Try cooling the syringe that is not over a flame with a wet cloth, water bath, or something. The sterling engine works with temperature difference, so that would increase the RPM and maybe stall the burning of the tube, if you water cool the engine. You could try to incorporate water cooling with your rocket engines too, that would be awsome!

fine vid. for the car a little addition could improve it much: add a roll back protection lever. it might fit nicely on the front side of the front wheel. for the very first syringe demo i felt like the piston caught a little thermal damage. at least it looks like it received a bit of transparency changes during first heating. for the alpha engine interconnect tube i am not currently having an instantly promising idea - unless you want to do glass welding on your own (with a hydrogene burner e.g. a Bunsen model it should be possible with not much fuzz - but will it be really tight on the hot end?).
