Ahead of Intel's Innovation event at Fort Mason in October 2021, Jon Fortt talks to Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger about his ambitious turnaround plan for the company, Alder Lake, discrete graphics, foundry, process technology, why the naysayers might be wrong, and what it will take to win back Apple's business.

Great interview, asked all the right questions and Pat Gelsinger provided real color on how Intel is coming back. It is fantastic to see an engineer run Intel, and Gelsinger’s knowledge and passion for semiconductors is visible. What a difference he makes.

Superb interview on the part of both chairs here -- I'd seen enough of the hubris, risk aversion, and bizarre distortion of Intel's original culture -- so I left the company 4 years ago. Could not be happier to see my former colleagues now being led with such enthusiasm, ambition, and deep technical competence back at the helm. Wish them all the best !

A few things you could have drilled him on - he hit all his regular talking points but they're often lacking detail. You wonder how deep he can be with so many arms of the company. A lot of the announcements are on products designed and rolled to production pre-Pat, so you do wonder how much he knows/knew when he came in. He talks about redundancy, why can't he explain explicitly what that means in different segments. He says market leader on ribbonfet, but a lot of design companies have been showcasing data for years - samsung are productizing it over a year ahead of Intel - Intel hasn't even productized EUV yet, for example. He says a close ASML relationship, but TSMC still remains the biggest customer for ASML, and recent murmurings about HighNA being pushed out. It wasn't until the press interview post innovation that we learned when he talks about Moore's Law, he's using a modified definition of simply transistors per product, rathe than simply per unit area, which is technically a bit of a cop out. TSMC has extensive packaging technology roadmap on a dozen fronts, whereas Intel only has two - so how can Intel be the packaging leader, and how can they overcome Tsmc's packaging lead with foundry customers when IFS isn't going to have substantial customer leverage outside a couple of customers until the latter half of the decade? Enthusiasm only gets Pat so far, and questions need to be answered.

'Innovation only happens with foundry' with regards Amazon - so Cooper Lake being built specifically for Facebook and end up with a substantially reduced public launch was nothing? I guess that's a bit harsh because Pat wasn't there, but that's kinda what scares me - he wasn't there during Intel's regression, so you wonder just how much he knows. To improve, he has to understand Intel's past. He's rehiring old Intel experts, but again, they weren't there to understand Intel's issues during the downturn. Recent news says that a couple of those new hires are leaving after only 10 months. Also hiring Intel's old experts, bringing them out of retirement, what does that say about Intel's next generation of engineers who have just been usurped by old hands. Where is the future of Intel coming from, 10-20 years out, as these rehired experts re-retire? I'd also mention his desire to return to a Grovian attitude, only the paranoid survive, but 5 nodes in 4 years is almost the complete opposite - steamrolling headfirst is a different strategy. How much is he trying to move the big pieces around but relying on others for the finer details, and how much of those finer details doe she know/understand/get behind? Part of the supposed issue with BK was that the issues were held back from the CEO from fear, so how does Pat reverse that mindset. Etc etc

@@TechTechPotato I think he understands the issue. I've heard him talk about the fact that they screwed up on not adopting EUV. That was the disastrous move that largely puts Intel where it's at today. Ultimately if Intel did the technically right thing, which many at Intel for sure knew before hand, they wouldn't be in the position they are in today.

@@TechTechPotato Andy Grove has a great talk that's on KZbin about strategic inflection points. Intel was at a strategic inflection point with 10nm and needing to go to EUV process. They chose what the suits thought was the safer, easier and cheaper route, and it screwed Intel.

I've been asking Pat this question for months. My sense is that there will be oversupply at some point, but the question is at what nodes. My current expectation: The more advanced your process nodes are, the less commoditized your product is likely to be, and the less vulnerable you'll be.

I think the previous CEO wanted to make sure Intel is financially sound, but lack the knowledge for innovation. Pat inherited a fundamentally sound company, now he just have to let his drive and creativity to work. Intel is on the right track with Pat. I’ve been adding many many shares of Intel over the past 6 months. In 2-3years, this stock will easily double with limited downside.

It maybe hard to win Apple back but i9-12900k is faster than M1 Max. People are gonna say "You're comparing a Desktop CPU to Laptop CPU" Yeah sure lemme make it fair. Intel core i9-12900hk (Intel's Laptop CPU) beats M1 Max.
