The AMD Athlon was my first AMD CPU ever. In 2001 I upgraded from a p3 450 MHz to an AMD Athlon running at a whopping 1.4 GHz, it had more than 3 times the CPU performance, it was an amazing CPU that could beat the lower end pentium4's.

Hmm. I find it interesting that you're benchmarking a Katmai PIII. I guess this is a more *fair* comparison given both machines are running their L2 cache at half-speed, but Katmai's SSE implementation left much to be desired (each 128-bit op is broken into two 64-bit ops, cutting effective speed in half compared to later uarch's) and unlike early K7 which had a lot of headroom, Katmai was hitting a clockspeed wall due to the 250nm process shared by the Deschutes PII. Though I guess both are limited by their hard-wired half-speed divider on their L2 cache -- K7 classic kinda cheated to hit higher clocks by shifting to a one-third divider for the L2 for as I recall the 800MHz model and onward, leading to an interesting situation where the 700MHz Athlon can usually beat the 800 since the L2 is clocked higher. I also wonder about whether someone could possibly make new goldfinger devices. They don't look incredibly complex, I bet the most uncommon part there is the connector that fits onto the card-edge on the top of the Athlon.

I would like to caution against socket A. Back in the day, it was easy to find power supplies with >30A on the 5V rail. Modern ATX PCs don't use 5V as much and a 1000 W ATX PSU can't necessarily run the socket A system, because it might only be 20A on the 5V rail. You've got to be a bit careful with socket A. Socket 478 is easier.

Athlon was preferred by gamers, but I use what I can get... and that's usually a Pentium III, a 3Dfx Voodoo3 3000, a 512mb stick of Kingston RAM, a WDC 7200rpm 40gb HD, and a Sound Blaster. 440BX chipset motherboards don't fall off of trees around here, so I use Intel 815E or Via Apollo Pro 133A ones... like the Asus P3V4X. Thunderbird versus Tualatin next? ;)

I personally use both AMD and Intel, with favorites in both camps. I am very grateful that AMD stepped in to compete. We the consumers benefit from this, after all, in the end. Athlons were often cheaper primarily due to their arrival into the CPU game later than Intel, which was already well funded and established as THE go-to brand name. Having a lot to prove, AMD really stepped up their game with the Athlon. Sometimes, they even outdid Intel. They were the first to 1Ghz for example (if memory serves.) AMD also had some cool offers. I was able to get an Athlon before release and below retail pricing with the AMD partners program (plus free swag) because I worked for Best Buy. I always thought this was so cool of them to do this for retail workers. I loved them both, but AMD really won me over on the customer appreciation side of things. Performance-wise, AMD and Intel were neck and neck back and forth many times. Sometimes, this was due to software optimizations favoring one or the other. But when it came to value, Athlon was bang for the buck the winner hands down time and again. Take the Pentium 4s, for example. Netburst was buggy and ran hot, plus there was the added expense (and assorted issues) of RDRAM for Intel exclusive platforms. Even when competitive, the Intel winners were typically not intended. The best values involved aftermarket motherboards, better cooling solutions, and overclocking (like the 300a for example.) Nowadays, you cannot go wrong with either solution, however, I lean in AMD's favor in light of value and performance. There are also potential issues with Specter/Ghost which impact Intel more.

the Athlon and PIII were generally pretty competitive depending on the version (Katmai < Slot A < Coppermine < Tbird < Tualatin) the main problem with the Athlons is the cooling, as the chip is significantly hotter and more power hungry than the PIII The other, lesser problem are the chipsets, VIA's chipsets were not that great compared to Intel's , although the AMD "Irongate" chipset for Slot A wasn't bad.
@Erik.Lundberg
@Erik.Lundberg 7 жыл бұрын
lightdark28 Coppermine was faster in some situations but not generally faster. "For content creation applications and games (in most cases), the 1GHz Pentium III is faster than the 1GHz Athlon. Whether this is because specific SSE optimizations or because of the full speed on-die L2 cache of the Pentium III depends on the particular game and/or application, but for the most part the Pentium III will come out on top. Things change once you enter the professional graphics arena, where the Athlon completely dominates provided that it is paired up with a KX133 motherboard." www.anandtech.com/show/500

VIA's chipsets weren't that great, but they where decent enough to have a stable system. And you are right AMDs downside was (is) the powerdraw but back than this didn't matter. Standard cooling kept them in normal thermal range. What bothers me is that noone seems to point out to the costs: This comes out of memory but i think my colleque payed 850 for his PIII 600 back then while i paid around 300 for my K7 550 (+25 for a goldfingerdevice 700Mhz overclock). Back then Intel was no option for my limited buget.

I have a PIII 550 Katmai here that runs with 616 MHz (112MHz FSB) and a Cache latency of 1 without problems. It has become a new thermal paste. Also with the standard VCore of 2.00V. The 600 Katmai has 2.05V. I would say, that the L2 Cache of the cpu is the problem. Also check the latency of the l2 cache with the tool Wcpul2. How fast (ns) are the cache modules of your 600 Katmai?

The K5 was very fast for its clock speed in integer-heavy code, but as soon as you booted up quake or some other FPU heavy game the pentium edged it out; not nearly as badly as I seemed to remember (I was probably thinking AMD 5x86).

a lot of details are not shown directly to public, but datasheets provide almost all details. EG AMD K6 is equipped with 20KiB PreDecode Instruction Cache, while K7 is equipped with 24KiB. While K6 PreDecode Intruction Cache is released to public, K7 PreDecode Instruction Cache is not released to public and it took a lot of research to find out size of it. Same goes to ChipSets. AMD750 have a lot of features, which are not widely known and even wikipedia comes short of information. AMD750 is just cut down version of AMD760. AMD750 was a way to push Athlon to market.

Slot 1 option is better. The reason is, you find it easier, cheaper. You can use Pentium II with unlocked multiplier in it, and underclock it to 266 Mhz or even lower. You can use Slotket adapter, and use socket 370 Pentium III, including Tualatins. You can get 1.4 Ghz, and overclock it to 1.5 + Ghz. So you have much more flexibile platform. Also, Intel chipset is more stable, and more compatible overall. AMD had problems at beginning, including with drivers. Now it's better, because drivers are matured. But in 1999, situation was much worse. This chipset problems lasted till KT400 basically, but KT266A was already "fair". Problematic were ones up to KT133 (without A). Note to mention, that in times, when first Athlons came out, there was no Pentium III 600 Mhz, only 550. 600Mhz version came out in August. So AMD had advantage of better performance, with 600 Mhz Athlon first 3 months. Also, Pentium III have almost half TDP. It's MUCH better to take Pentium III, cause it get less hot, draw less power... and overall, you can use smaller/quiter cooler on it, also thanks to better temperatures, usually lasts longer... which is very improtant factor for retro components. I would take Slot 1 system over Slot A, anyday, it has much more advantages.

@@microphonology2830 Actually, you can go 133 Mhz to ~1700Mhz (I can overclock Tualatin till 1700). 133 Mhz is 66FSB x2. You can switch Processor easily on Slot 1, basicaly like RAM. So you can underclock it to Pentium II 400, which has unlocked multiplier, and downclock it to 2x multiplier, and lower FSB to 66. You can even disable L2 Cache, so you'll get basically "Covington" Celeron 133 Mhz. :) It should equal about Pentium 133 MMX on Intel TX 430 chipset and with 512 KB cache, in terms of performance.

I could go up to 132 Mhz, don't know why, on 133 it even doesnt post (maybe some protection on Celeron, to overclock it this way?). At 130x13, it was around 1700 Mhz. I think Celeron at 1.7 Ghz, should outperform Pentium III at 1.4 Ghz, as it has only 256 Kb cache, instead 512kb cache. In games around win98 era, 256kb cache is enough and differance from 512kb version is not very big. I have also QDI Legend advance, but 10E version. Which should be very similiar. As far as I know, it doesnt have overclocking in 1mhz steps, so there is only jumper setting, for 133 and next step is 150 Mhz? I don't remember it, and I am lazy to take out that mb and check it out. Maybe, on SynectiX 5EP , you would be able to find max FSB, around 144-145 Mhz, than Pentium III Tualatin would be around 1.5 Ghz, and could be faster from 1.7 Ghz Celeron.

Oh i get that.. I have been a AMD fan since the AM486 days, but i have ran intel and cyrix and via as well. , but as i came to price/performance, and my pocketbook, AMD was the way to go. I have never been one who had to have the TOP of the line right away.. so I am just trying to get a feel if going from my current FX8350 to A Ryzen 1700 or 1700x or 1800x worth it..

+mperu99 How is it not ahead when the 1800x beats or matches the 1000+ dollar cpu from intel that it directly competes with?? Or even better the 325 dollar 1700 does that as well when overclocked. Of course it will do worse in quad core games just like how the 6900k is slower as well and that is in games optimized around intel core cpus while also being crippled by a bug in windows 10 scheduler. Things will change drastically once these issues are solved and next year we might actually see a few games that run better on the ryzen than even the 7700k. Either way makes no sense to even really compare it with the 7600/7700k anyways, since that is what the ryzen r5 is supposed to compete with.

The only drawback with AMD Athlon at that time is that they generate more heat than Intel CPUs.

The Pentium III's advantage was also the rockstable BX-Chipset on many Mainboards. The new Athlon had some trouble with some chipsets and also was more sensitive with cheap PSUs. But the Athlon was great. I loved how it kicked the PIII's ass. ;)

@@melvd3484 this is true. I have the same p3 600mhz intel and a athlon 500 back then. The athlon 500 kicks the p3 600mhz in the ass in terms of performance. The only drawback on amd is the insane heating issues.
@warrax111
@warrax111 3 жыл бұрын
@@melvd3484 That is completly true. I would opted for Pentium III system. I opted for AMD k6-2 500mhz super socket 7 system, and man, we had so many problems (with chipset drivers, some games and programs refused to go, lots of crashes). Cooling was easier on Pentium, it was like 30 W TDP vs 50 W TDP. BX440 chipset was rock stable, one of the most compatible and stable system. We had also lots of crashes here and than, or crashes into systtem from games... terrible decision to go with early VIA chipsets. If I know so much as today, I would for sure put everything into BX440 motherboard, even though they were most expensive, and rather use little slower Pentium III CPU. Instead of AMD k6-2 500mhz, we could go for Celeron300A with good BX440 motherboard, and overclock it to 450 mhz. That would in FPU intensive application much faster than 500 Mhz amd k6-2. Celerons were already cheap in 1999, so it was much better option. We could also upgrade to Slot 1 Pentium III later, while because of that stupid super socket motherboard, we could not upgrade , AMD k6-2 500 Mhz was basicaly highest. Very bad decision. Intel was better option in that time, stability is more, than 10% speed. Now, for retro computer, it is still advantage... more stable,and more compatible, and also, very little heat (around 30W), also cheaper. No, Athlon is not winner, in my eyes, but Intel.

I have been using computers daily for over 25 years and in my opinion Intel has always made the better cpu:s. More stable, more compatible, and less hot. AMD were cheaper, yes.. But cheaper is always a compromise.. AMD cpus had less margins, they run the cpus too hot and i have had more trouble with AMD systems in general.. Intel is the way to go for best performance and stability.

AMD and Intel have practically one-upped each other over the years I would recommend either of them depending on the needs of the user. Pentium 3 and Athlon/Athlon XP were neck and Neck of each other but the Athlon 64/X2 would own the Pentium 4/D both in performance and heat as Pentium 4 and the Pentium D ran HOT AF. Then Core2duo\Quad and AM2 Athlon\AM3 Athlon II\AM2Phenom\AM3 Phenom II would go Neck and Neck again one is only slightly better than the other in some scenarios. the Core i series is where Intel would leave AMD in the Dust for Over half a decade until Ryzen came along and now 2021 the role is reversed again as AMD has a slightly faster CPU and uses less power and therefore produces less heat. I have been a computer Tech since 1985 and both companies had their fair share of trouble over the years and both can be unstable and will have issues depending on the combination of your hardware heck Intel has had so many security vulnerabilities now that there is probably more to come this year too so simple answer don't be a fanboy and don't be biased.
