The mechanic for rotation on the vertical axis is freaking awesome! Mounting the props at different angles, slowing props that sit at certain angles while speeding up props of opposing angle. Absolutely brilliant.

People wondering about why such an Idea: the main reason being easier control. Helicopters are very difficult to pilot and with a machine like this all the job is done by the software running the electronic control of the rotors. All you have to do is to intuitively control the lever, the rest is done by the control units.

I love it, but if you lose one engine, your done, and no chance of auto-rotation, or any dead stick glide-ratio... is there a parachute like on a cirrus? I mean it's super cool, but with all those little engines that depend on each other for stability aren't you just increasing your chances for a point of failure? I understand you would not be if you lose one, and the other can off-set such a loss, so I am just wondering if anybody knows what is the minimum\maximum engine failures in which you can still maintain flight or even what you would do in CPU failure, as it seems that condition would be a big concern, as aerodynamically, this defies all basics of lift when those prop aren't turning, it becomes a rock. Please educated me?

@athertop8 жыл бұрын
Each rotor provides thrust and enough are required to lift the craft plus passengers, plus have enough in reserve to provide redundancy plus have enough in excess to provide control - so it move through wind/weather. Safety in numbers (redundancy) provides enough lift to maintain control if one or more motors fail, allowing a safe emergency landing. If you just had 4 motors/props and one fails, then you'd be screwed! Normally, you design a multirotor to provide twice the required thrust of the all-up weight (AUW).

The benefits of this I believe would probably be as drones naturally calculate the geometry of the flight, it would mean the majority of the inflight mathematics can be done by a computer and therefore, as a result, the pilot only has to be focused on what and where he wants to go without additional inflight problems, a helicopter or even a plan/jet pilot would be concerned about, as you can clearly see the man demonstrating the model drone-copter has only got directional monitors, simple-to-use start up controls, radio and a joystick which makes this as easy to fly as it is effectively to drive a car (in terms of complexity, not functionality). I believe in contrast, that if this were to be commercially available there would have to be heavier regulation as if their were millions upon millions flying around in the these drone-copters due to accessibility and it would have to be taxed the same as a helicopter in my opinion as it's a legitimate mode of transport that would require many people nation or world wide in a much larger more connected air traffic control network and would be very complicated to manage. So yeah, I seem an indefinite future for this technolgy and if this becomes commercially available with the adequate regulation and management would be something of a transport based revolution!

Great concept being electric and all, but it can't go for more than a few miles before it says battery low. Looks like it is targeted to major cities that can use this to get around inside the city but never out of a city. Made out of fiber reinforced composite material that is lightweight and strong and has mass of 290kg and can carry 160kg on it. But we still don't have an electric helicopter with battery life that is comparable to a gas tank for a gas helicopter yet. I wish they continue this research until one such thing can be made.

@shravanshravan44028 жыл бұрын
its very dangerous, any single rotor failure can make it out of balance and even if you are using some balancing algorithm still it may be difficult to make an emergency escape for the pilot .
@einfachnurleo70998 жыл бұрын
... I understand what you want to say, but what do you think happens if the same thing happens to a helicopter? If think you´ll be able to get this thing down save even if 2 rotos fail (they probably built in a few extra once just to be save)
@RennieAsh8 жыл бұрын
I think it could compensate quite well for one motor failing. The battery on the other hand...
@athertop8 жыл бұрын
I build multi-rotors, and even a hexacopter (6 rotors) can be controllable if a rotor fails - as long as its designed so that the remaining rotors are able to produce enough thrust - so its all down to design! No doubt the other electronics of a man carrying multi-rotor would have been designed with redundancy too, allowing for failure. Without variable (collective) pitch rotors a multi-rotor is disadvantaged in power loss situations, compared with traditional helis, so a lot more thought needs to be given to redundant systems.
@circleinfo7 жыл бұрын
But it is much safer then a helicopter. If one rotor from a helicopter fails... Well then you can say goodbye to the world. Multicopters like these are programmed that the remaining ones are compensating the broken ones. One one side the will go faster on other side they will go slower. Even 5 rotors could break (not on the same side tho) and you can still landing safe.
@junoguten7 жыл бұрын
In a regular helicopter you have control of the angle of the blades, so in case of full engine failure and providing you're not too close to the ground you can unclutch and use the fall to spin up the rotors and then change the angle to generate lift right before you land.

Every person with hands could fly a multicopter like this without much knowledge. Do you also can say this about helicopters? I will visit you at your grave. On Top of that 5 rotors can break and you are still flying. What will happen if the one rotor of a helicopter will break?
@billjuhasz38757 жыл бұрын
With the same electronics a regular helicopter would indeed be just as easy to fly. Try to fly a quad or "Volo" copter without fly by wire, gyro stabilized, GPS control, it would be essentially impossible. What makes this thing easy to fly is not the configuration, it's the computers. I also wonder if this thing has any ability to auto-rotate, as is required of all helicopters. Without auto-rotation capability this thing would fall like a stone if it ran out of power. A normal helicopter can land without power by using the "auto-rotating" blades to fly like an auto-gyro, I con't see how Volocopter would do this with the fixed pitched blades.
@kaduoliveira23906 жыл бұрын
Eu apenas acho que deveria haver um motor exclusivo para cada helice tornando o assim quase que zero a chance de possiveis acidentes porque em caso de pane de um outro daria sustentacao
@SiapSiup8 жыл бұрын
But why ? Isnt normal helicopters good enough? I think that one strong rotor is better that few smaller. It seems like art for art.
@ltrodd8 жыл бұрын
+cotytupocotytu Why? Lose an engine or 2 or 3 and your fine in this one, it's mechanically very simple so it requires very little maintenance, it's far cheaper to run, it's potentially far cheaper to build, the computer can precisely control rotors to make very simple flight controls rather than complex flight controls of regular copter, etc...
@RennieAsh8 жыл бұрын
Normal helicopter needs a tail for balance, is heavier, louder, more difficult to control - if something is slightly out of balance, helicopter self destructs.
@circleinfo7 жыл бұрын
Even a kid could fly such multicopter. You simply need nearly no knowledge. Thats the whole point of this. Making a helicopter flying licence is hard as hell and takes extremly long time. With something like these you could simply fly to work.

+Astraphic because of weight saving reasons, you'd have to have big and heavy parts of steel and other heavy materials. Like this you can spread the load evenly out.
