I've been wanting to make a sword with the mind of a blink dog for years now. Acts as an immovable rod if you tell it to "Stay." Teleports to your hand if you tell it to "Come." And let's you cast Misty Step a certain number of times a day if you are holding it.

I like the idea of a capstone artificer ability where they can craft intelligent items... like either summoning an outside intelligence from the ether to come live in the item, or maybe trapping a slain foe's soul. Would be good on a necromancerish sub class with create undead and gentle repose on the spell list, and perhaps they gain the equivalent of a manual of flesh golems at some point.

@@jamestaylor3805 right on man I'm not super up to date on artificers, make your humonculous an intelligent weapon or armor, and you gain extra hit bonuses, advantage on perception and such... thinking about it that way definitely takes it down from a capstone ability and makes it just part of being an artificer.

I had my players raid a sleeping red dragons lair and they decided to sneak into where he was sleeping. 10 feet from the door was a beautiful sword stuck into the ground. Beside the sword was a pile of molten metal and holding the handle was a pristine hand. The barbarian took the sword and later they ran into some kobolds. He proudly withdrew his new sword and found out it was rusted with holes in the blade and had a -3 to hit. The sword is sentient and craves only a worthy fight so anything under cr3 it has a minus to hit but grows in power the higher the cr of the foe it faces.

Dragon scale armor is a very low hanging fruit for combat prowess at the cost of social encounter viability. I like that druids get access to all medium armor, but people assume they can only use leather and hide armor. Sure you can try to get dragon scale mail, but the dragons in this setting like to talk. Is just scale mail really worth the fallout of that? You know umber hulks and giant crabs can be used to make half or even full plate, and they don't ask the party questions.

When the fellas were talking about items growing in power, it reminded me of how the Samurai class worked back in 3.5 Oriental Adventures. You had a special weapon as part of your class that became more and more magical as you gained levels. If they ever rework the Artificer class to be a little more robust, I think that would be a good bit of history to look at.

Speaking of crafting items; I always enjoyed the idea that to create a slayer weapon (not ammunition) you literally had to use the weapon to slay a type of creature. My sword has cleaved the heads from a 1000 goblins and now has a taste for their blood. Kind of like how creating Demonic/Cursed weapons is often portrayed. The dagger of the serial killer was actually a Human Slayer (Dagger +1), that may whisper dark things to you about how to increase it to a +2 weapon.

That reminds me of Caladbolg from Guild Wars 2! A legendary greatsword wielded by an NPC ally & inspired by Excalibur, it is at first lost and you must reclaim it. Much later in the story, it shatters after a dragon is slain, and the wielder perishes. The game then gives you a side quest to find the Shards and Dreams of Caladbolg, themselves hidden in pretty fun locations, and once you have them all you get to reforge Caladbolg in your image (whatever weapon type works for you, especially since not every class can use greatswords). I especially like how it has you fight the ghost/regrets of every wielder of Caladbolg-including your own. >:)

So this brings me to connect to the idea within Shinto that making a sword was a sacred act, considered as much a ceremony as it was craft. That combined with the idea I got from you guys, I think anyway it's foggy right now, that a sword could be so well made that the craftsmanship would imbue it with magic. It could be cool to have these ideas manifest as craftsman imbuing initial traits into the magic swords they make it. Their consciousness being this focused while forming the blade over many hours and repeated, mindful actions would lead to it gaining sentience, folding their experience, perspectives, and awareness in with the folds of steel. Perhaps this level of focus, combined with the specific actions of craft could constitute a ritual. This would leave room for those initial building blocks to be fleshed out with experience, and connection with wielders. Which makes me think of recognizing the fluidity of their personality. Maybe it's not a cursed sword, it's just mad from being wielded by a fiend, and being forced into such atrocious acts that it is broken psychologically.

yeah, arguing that the idea of professional (ie, paid) adventurers is non-functional from an irl perspective is a little, um, ignorant. much of the settled world was "discovered" by such types. Columbus, Lewis and Clark, and countless others risked their lives to explore the unknown, and were paid well for it, including being fully funded by their patrons. many of them suffered greatly along the way, and some came to their ends thru "death by misadventure." Not to mention the havoc they wreaked in their journeys, tho some were obviously better people than others, but they did much to shape the world as we know it, regardless of how history ultimately views them.

If I ever DM, I have an idea for a sentient sword I want to try. I call it the Blade of Steppenwolf. In the history of the world, there was an evil warrior named Steppenwolf. Steppenwolf reappears periodically throughout history as either a bandit or a warlord. Scholars speculate whether this is the same person with a supernaturally long lifespan or simply a title that is continually taken up by other for the status. No matter the case, each Steppenwolf is always reported to be wearing similar armor and wielding the Blade of Steppenwolf. In truth, the Blade of Steppenwolf is a sentient sword that slowly takes over its wielder until they are killed. Then it claims that the new owner has earned the right to wield it. It starts off relatively friendly and obedient, but begins to manipulate the wielder into acting how the sword wants. Eventually, the sword takes control of the body and that becomes the next iteration of Steppenwolf. tl;dr A sentient/parasitic sword possesses a string of hosts who each take on the same name and become a psuedo-mythic person in history, but nobody realizes it is actually the sword doing so.

I was playing in a low-magic campaign. My unusually-large warrior always yelled “Neck Biter” as he drew his sword, any sword. His sword which although well-made was in no way magical. He wielded it well and always HDYWTDT decapitated the foe triumphantly. His sword became as notorious as the wielder. Eventually he stared down a small warband, with just him and his horse. They didn’t know I had a talented archer in overwatch. Eventually he just dropped the name of his sword as he named himself. “I saw that you were following me. Perhaps you think I am afraid. I am Thorkel the Tall, wielder of Neck-Biter. You should not get in my way. My sword is thirsty. Your blood is young and thin. Go home.” While chewing an apple and feeding the core to his horse. He then stood in front of his horse, his sword worn with pride. He continued, to their leader, a Jarling at best, “I have survived many death blows. Odin Alfather has a plan for me. I know this. I have met a Valkyrie come to the battlefield. It was not my time although I was ready. Do you believe Odin kept me on Midgard to die to you?!” Chuckles, as they backed off and rode away.

Heirloom... The mage's spellbook is actually a book that has been passed down in his family/house/clan etc. It houses the soul of an old/ancient predecessor. Imagine Dresden Files with the uncle attached to the skull. But now it part of the book. A snarky old bastard that makes spells available to the mage when...and IF he finds the PC worthy enough. A seemingly normal dwarven greataxe. However it houses the soul of an Azer that really hates Djinn. The soul is currently dormant, but once it gets strong enough it'll want to go after the Djinn. For their betrayal when building the Brass City. Allowing the Totem Barbarian, through pathworking, to receive dreams and such. Maybe even get some foreshadowing of occasional events. Over time revealing lettering on the axe. Providing more power to the barbarian in tiers. Such as a strong fire cone attack etc. To provide the barbarian with some ranged capacity as well. My PC went out to learn more about things as knowledge was gained. In some dungeons noticing tapestries which triggered memories from the Azer etc. The woodelf crafted her gear. The party was helping a western styled dwarven settlement which they defended against an orc raid. So they chased the retreating orcs back up the mountain to their stronghold. The journey took days and had to camp in a cave one night. A Phasepider attacked them and the druid had a cool kill. Then she rolled a nat20 to harvest its silky ethereal carapace and silk. She had to preserve it and when back in town created a new piece of shimmery cloth armor. Which lets her escape into the ethereal realm once per long rest. She also made a shield from a young black dragon decorated with teeth from giant wolves. Quite a cool imagery. But going through the books for ideas isn't bad. Especially if you got entire armory of magical items from the older editions. Just go through those books and you got tons of stuff. I enjoy 3.5's concept of magical stones that can be "Slotted" during a short rest. Each stone giving a certain effect from spiderclimb, a resistance type etc etc. And giving players the chance to just exchange it whenever they feel the need for it.

My samurai was cursed by the Muramasa that was sealed beneath his family manor in Kazokura. The spellplague and Sundering cracking the magic seals and causing the shrine to twist and warp to reveal the blade and leak its magic. After an intervention by the PCs confronting my character, Yoshi-Yoshi, about how his curse almost killed them multiple times, Yoshi relented and finally sat down to talk to and bargain with the sword, granting him some small sliver of extra power. Initially he was simply using the magic leaking from the sword and channeling through him as his warlock magic but now the two are more willing to strengthen each other: Yoshi feeds Muramasa blood, Muramasa gives me more magic and increasing access to its own magic powers directly! The plan is to transform Muramasa into a Nodachi/greatsword. I’d be like Sephiroth, but good! (wait a minute-)

The sword that leaves words carved into fallen, you’ve gathered all the bodies, puzzled out the order, and it reads… “Hello, I’ve been trying to contact you about your Car’s extended warranty”

Fun fact! Lots of people like to flavor the Hexblade as having an intelligent weapon, but the text of Pact of the Blade specifically states you cannot make an intelligent weapon your Pact Weapon.

Wearing all your wealth as an adventurer... there ought to be a tradition that you bury a dead fellow adventurer that you find. A famous adventurer dies in a hole somewhere? Go the mad scramble to get his loot (and give him a proper burial, of course)

Harper's Pin? Not necessarily KOS, but... it wouldn't take much in the way of justification.

Fun stuff! I think magic items have always been really important to me and every player I’ve ever played with. We would all would rather have too many than too few. Sentient and ‘relic’ class items that can grow and LV up with PCs are particularly interesting.

I was thinking most of the magic items in my setting have a family name engraved on them. Just because the players found a +3 sword doesn't mean it's theirs; the late owner's great grandson might still be alive.

Or the sword you find is the blade of a fallen anointed knight and the order he belonged to is trying to kill you to recover it.😎

I love your content when you film together. That being said...the separate "podcast" feel is so far from the original conversational, "friends around a table" vibe from the other videos that I can't watch them.
