Intense 911 call of homeowner shooting intruder

A 47-year-old female homeowner called 911 after hearing someone break into her home. While on the phone with the 911 operator the woman shot the intruder, and it was all caught on the 911 recording.
This is the entire 911 call, edited only to remove moments of silence from the tape for brevity.

I've spent nearly 40 years in law enforcement. I've been on the responding side and I've been on the dispatch side as well. When you hear the sheer panic in someone's voice whether they pull the trigger or not, that's something that's going to live with them for the rest of their lives. I don't know about it being a happy ending. A good outcome maybe, you know what I mean? I'm not bagging on you so don't start flaming me.

If you were to say that you are glad that there was a positive or favorable outcome I would agree with you straight away. But this woman is going to be traumatized for the rest of your life. Traumatized is a better adjectives in my opinion than those that you selected. I base my opinion on a career in law enforcement. But I figure at the end of the day you and I can flip a coin and however comes out as fine. She walked away from it and he had to be carried out on a stretcher. I hope and pray that she gets the therapy that she's going to need. Pulling the trigger is the easy part. The nightmares that she's going to have aren't included in that. Actually they do. Or it would help if they did. I use to get stuff together for different ambulances, and hospital floors etc, and depending on the injury, it can dictate which ambulance is sent. Not all ambulances carry the same thing. Some have extra cardiac care equipment and medicine etc. So it does help to know so they send everything needed in the field the first time. They'll even send specialized EMTs

The EMTs were also getting information from the 911 operator that would enable them to react faster/better once they arrived. Once inside the house, it takes a long time to go back out to the bus and get the gear you need and bring it back inside. Seconds wasted can make the difference between life and death in many situations.

I was a police officer for years and on calls like this I can personally guarantee we get there as fast and as safe as possible however it still takes time and if you can’t protect yourself until we get there there’s a good chance you’ll be severely hurt or worse. This woman saved her own life by owning and knowing how to use a firearm. She hid and locked herself inside her bathroom. She told dispatch she was “terrified “ and she used only the force necessary to stop the attack. She said they started beating her when they saw her in there. If she wasn’t armed there’s no telling how the police would have found her or if they would have at all. She did extremely well under the circumstances. Completely justified shooting

Skip Russell I used to be an E-911 dispatcher. It’s not an easy job to do. As a dispatcher you have to get all the information that you can for officer safety as well. Could he have shortened it some? Yes! But being on the phone and trying to keep people calm in hectic times is not easy. And knowing that if something did happen there’s nothing that he can do to help the person on the other line besides telling the officers to hurry up. It’s a very stressful job. I’m just sayin.

Now this homeowner will never again have peace of mind that a simple locked door, window, or 6-8 foot fence allows most of us. We don't have a gun but... My house back door was getting broken into by 2 guys when I was at work, my wife yelled "I have a gun and I've called 911". The guys took off like scared rabbits. The cops arrived 5 minutes later, the cop dog followed the scent and caught the guys walking down the street 7 blocks away. The threat of a gun and knowing the cops are on their way is usually more than enough to scare them away BEFORE they even break in. She got lucky because she did next to nothing right. She could easily have been killed if the guy had a weapon or took hers or knocked her out before she shot (she even said she let him get close enough to "beat on her" before she fired. She never should have let him get in the house, fire through the door or yell "I've called 911 and I'm going to shoot you".

I listened to a call a women begged for help. Dispatch said sorry, there is just nobody. Go get a protection order tomorrow morning. She was murdered while on the call. I bet they found someone to go out to the murder seen prior to the a.m.? How is there NO ONE?? No matter how far a way, like just sorry, can't help you?

@Calm She did. She hid in a bathroom to keep away from him. He entered the bathroom and assaulted her. Where the hell else is she supposed to go? She fired a weapon only after HE made contact with her. Had she not had a means of protecting herself, she might be dead now. She did what she needed to do to preserve her life over his.

I was terrified for this brave woman. Bravery doesn’t mean not being afraid or even in terror. It means acting in the face of that terror!! She could have curled up in the tub and given in to her fear. I hope she’s not too traumatized from this event and can maybe turn any trauma into pride for what she did to defend her own and refusing to be a victim in her own home. I just wish her well.

Imagine that old woman going to war, she'll be no good. Bravery means composure when facing danger, not being terrified, panting and shaky. Controlled fear. Of course, an old woman is not supposed to be facing danger. She didn't show bravery but self-preservation.

No one said she would go out in a battlefield and win the Medal of Honor for bravery!! I'm saying, when it came to her doorstep she didn't give in to her fear when many people would. Fight or Flight...she fought...which I think is a BRAVE move on her part. You seem to think the words "bravery" and "war" are synonymous. That you can't have bravery without war. Your logic is like saying; If a person runs into a burning building and saves a child they're not brave for doing that because you think he would fold under fire on a battlefield. Makes no sense. Your view is flawed.

The dispatcher infuriated me by asking this traumatized woman “where on his body did you shook him?” Like she’s supposed to endanger herself to find out. She shot him, he’s down and he better not get up, and you can find out where he’s hit when the officers get here.
